View Full Version : Extractors: High-pitched turbo style hiss

After getting my extractors fitted and driving, I realised that once I reach approx 2.7k rpm they begin to produce a slightly audible hissing sound... by 3500 rpm it's grown into an insane whooshing sound, just like a turbo spooling.

Now I've been told by mates that it's just a normal induction sound, and technically if I'm expelling gasses out of the block and through the exhaust much quicker and more efficiently I'm going to get a nice loud hiss. It also seems to be a lot more noticible when the car is cold, on cold nights, or down at the coast.

To be honest it sounds freakin' awesome and I'd love to keep it, but if there's something wrong maybe I should know about it... I'm running a set of wildcat extractors, a few engine mods and a 2.5" exhaust from the y-pipe.

that's normal for extractors, the reason, extractors are thinner and bit lighter than the cast iron headers from factory, noises of hot gases rushing out from the cylinders will be heard and it is possible that parts of the extractors are resonating at that particular rpm band.

Also, the design on the wild cat extractors are for high rpm, so do you notice any loss in torque down low?

I've gotta 2.4L TE needing extractors very soon....

wat do you guys recommend?

1) wildcats
2) Pacemakers

To be honest, I love the Wildcats... for a 2.4 I'm not sure what the results would be, and because of my failing gearbox (see the "Auto Trans Power Loss" topic) - and a fudged up engine block - I haven't actually gained power from my recent splurge on mods, in fact I've lost it... but that's beside the point. To answer your question WhiteDevil, after my chip re-tune I've lost power up-top, but by no means base that on anything except the failing top-end of my block. Most likely once I get everything fixed I will have gained power in between 2700 - 4800rpm, as that is where the power is most noticible after the install.

On my 3.0l they sound absoloutely amazing, they've changed the sound from a mild "trrr" sound from the engine and the normal drone from a cannon to a very loud, WRX'y broken up sound from the engine and a very "track-car" like sound from the muffler, and don't forget the lovely induction sound ("sssssssssphhhhhhhhh"). Maybe I've overdone the "sounds like" bits, but to be honest I couldn't be happier with em after putting them on my car.

Only problem is they cost me a freakin' packet (damned rip-off exhaust shops) and they had to be modified to suit a 3.0l (the units that came in were for a 3.5).

On the other hand, and to be honest if you're looking for a unit cost-wise I'd go the pacemakers - they seem to be the cheapest you can possibly get, and from reports of other AMC people they don't go half bad either. Which ever set of extractors you choose, keep in mind that a) you're almost guaranteed a 2-10kW (at the wheels) power increase.. b) you're guaranteed a great sound coming from your engine.. and c) you're limited to a supercharger after fitting, unless you get rid of them to make way for a turbo. Anyways, *phew*! I've said my bit. :)

I can get something similar when I give mine a quick spurt.I have been told it could also be coming from the flex pipes etc.,

Just to be on the safe side, have you checked for leaks? Around joins and the manifold-to-head gasket? Not saying that a leak is the cause of this noise but it'd be worth checkin out just to be sure.

And maddog, I recomend pacemakers, although Im not sure if they do them for the 2.4 magnas. Anyway I recomend the pacemakers as Ive had bad experiences with wildcat extractors on my old 2.6 astron, and RPW are fairly pricey from what I've gathered. So in my personal opinion, go for the pacemakers, Im happy with the gains I got from them on my 3 litre and they are a well known leading brand. Just not sure if they make them for the 2.4 four bangers though.

Actually NO-ONE makes extractors for the TE+ 2.4, except RPW, and there expensive.
Thats half the reason I sold my ole 2.4 and got the 6, just easier to mod.
