Been to look at a 1992 Verada ei today and the car looks in good shape all round except for a puff of blue smoke on start up? Anyone know what causes this and whether I should steer clear?

Probably worn valve stem seals, the oil leaks past the seals when the car is off and then it settles in the cylinder, when you start the car up the oil gets burnt and you get a puff of smoke. My car does that too ;) lol
but after 268,000kms you kind of expect it.

On top of what KB said.. another reason is that the engine oil is overfilled that it is going to the exhaust...check the dipstick
