View Full Version : 3way Or 4way
Im planning on getting some 6" Speakers for the back of my TN wagon, Just wondering what the difference between 3ways and 4ways are, has anyone had experience with comparing them??
Thanks

First of all a coaxial speaker is a speaker that contains other speakers inside the cone. Like when you see a speaker that has smaller tweeters inside.
A split system includes separate speakers. Eg midbass (say 6" in diameter) and a tweeter (say 1" in diameter). Which are not part of the 'one' unit.
3 way speaker just refers to there being 3 speakers.
2 or 3 way will be fine for most needs. Quite often when they say 4 way speaker sets, the smallest tweeter is just there for looks and doesnt actually do anything.
A 2 way or 3 way will be fine.
Each speaker plays its own portion of the frequency spectrum. The more speakers the more each speaker can play a smaller set of frequencies, and the less it will distort trying to play frequencies it was not designed for. E.g a subwoofer cannot play high frequncies very well, whilst a tweeter cannot play low frequencies very well. If you try to play these frequencies through them the speaker generally distorts which is not good for sound quality. So we separate the frequencies using crossovers (Resistors etc that cut off high or low frequncies) and each speaker can then play frequencies it was designed to play and we get the most out of our system.
To see the difference, when you are in a audio store listen to a 3 way tweeter and cover the smaller 'tweeters' with the palm of your hand. You shouldn't hear the higher frequencies.
Hope it helps.

Yeh that helps alot thanks
But do u reckon its worth paying an extra $10 for a 4 way which also has a higher power rating?

i have kenwood 6x9" 4 way speakers rated at 80wrms in the rear parcel shelf of my TM. wen amped, they are awesome. higher frequencies are very clear and there is also alittle bit of bass there to back it up. $200 they were. i've listened to those pioneer 3 ways in the back of a sedan and i thought mine did better.
buy wat u can power first of all. i got my kenwoods cause i didnt think i was ever gunna get a sub. i had a small amp powering them and they were great. shocking off the head unit though, just because they are so underpowered. my splits and sub drown out everything else so in a way, the kenwoods are kinda a waste. they were free so im not complaining.
but hey, $10 more u cant complain. go for it.

YEah the only way you can judge is by listening to them. Forget whether its 3 way or 4 way. You can buy high quality two way speakers that would sound many times better if you are willing to pay the price. If you can hear the difference go for it. If it looks better, for $10 I'd go for it too...
Higher power rating will generally mean a better speaker. Esp if it's a well known brand and the power rating is RMS not PMPO. But through your headunit, you wont be able to get near the speakers true performance. If you dont have subs, consider running your speakers off an amp. And also consider spending more money on your fronts than on your rear if you havent already done so. Ignore any peak output figures you see on anything as its total bull. "I can put 10000 w through these speakers before the blow up", wow thats really useful...
Whatever tickles your pickle really. :D
Good luck.
