View Full Version : Yet Another Extractors/Exhaust thread

Hi 'all, I realise there's been a couple of discussions recently about extractors and exhausts, but none of them answered my specific queries, so rather than hi-jack someone elses thread...here goes.

I've decided exhaust and extractor mods will the first things off my wishlist to get done. Based on discussions I've read on here previously - I've decided to go with Pacemaker headers and an aftermarket cat back exhaust. In the last couple of days I've been seriously considering getting Pacemakers & a redback exhaust off that dude on ebay. "why go ebay?" you ask; well my work schedule is extremely full on at the moment and I like the idea of being able to just bid, pay, and wait for delivery, and then arrange fitment at my convenience.

I worked it out last night, and the final price if I go down the ebay road is just under $800 including shipping from Melb to Bris (supply only obviously). He's got $410 on the pacemakers, and $330 on the redback (from memory). Without having made any enquiries, I'm expecting to pay $200-250 for fittment by a reputable exhaust place, including a nice tip (after a bit of shopping around).

My first question to those who may have already been thru this is, are they reasonable prices for those items?? the seller claims that the RRP of the pacemakers is $400+ and $600+ for the redback (obviously I'm taking these claims with a grain of salt - until verified)

My second question, is my estimate of the price of fitment/nice tip a fair assumption in anyones opinion/experience?

I also have concerns over the implications of lowering the ride height of my magna in the future once I have had the pacemakers installed - I understand they sit a 'fair' amount lower than the standard exhaust. I know a lot of y'all have some pretty low rides, and probably just as many have pacemakers fitted - anyone had any particularly bad experiences with Pacemakers and a low magna and if so, how low is your ride?

Finally - If anyone can recommend a really good exhaust place for the fitment in the south/west of brisbane (i'll travel a reasonable distance for a good shop) that will probably save me about a dozen phone calls.

Thanks heaps AM ppl.

Hi, a few of us Vic boys have that set up (pacemakers + redback catback).

The price is about right, but if you're serious about it, you can probably knock a bit more off that price tag if you write direct to Trevor, from onautos.com.au, which is the same person(shop) selling that on ebay.

I have a 3.0L, it has a shorter Head compared to the 3.5L, and thus the pacemakers sit a bit lower, My car is lowered, front wheel arch is about 670mm from ground, the pacemaker pipes are about 120 - 130mm off the ground. If your suspension is good, eg it doesn't bottom, you shouldn't have any problems. I don't have any problems with bottoming out now that i've learnt how to drive sideways over steap on-ramps.

You will like it once you get it, very good gains.

Thanks for the nfo whitedevil. I've taken your advise and submitted a request for pricing info thru onautos.com.au's online form - see how that goes.

On a side note - I see in your profile, that you also have ducted cold air into a K&N panel filter and you have an auto. have you ever posted details of how you managed this anywhere on the forums (pics maybe)? I've been giving some thought to how I'm going to handle my soon to be aquired exhaust mods desire for cold air, and lots of it.

thanks again.

The heads are the same it is the block that is lower.

The price is not too bad, fittment is actually very easy.

My CAI is very primitive, just the Air conditioning ducting 3" in diameter (reflexible) and I running it past the battery and it comes out, scoops forward under the front bumper.

Ummm... I was under the impression that the 3.5L was a stroked 3.0L - in which case, the head & Block would be the same (roughly). anyho... anyone else got anything to say on the subject??

Any estimates of a % power increase I could expect? kw gains?

Anyone had any issues with the heat given off by the headers?? does the factory heat sheild still fit? I'm considering wrapping them in that thermal tape type stuff.

Bored and stroked so there is a difference. Anyone know the dimensions? Don't know whether you'll gain much going from 2.4' mandrel to 2.5' mandrel. You'll gain the most from the muffler.

5kw maybe, and a bit more torque. is the car auto or manual?

auto - says so in my sig.

would that be 5kw at the wheels??? isn't there 7kw (or so) difference between the exec's and the sports/VRX and the only difference is a 'hi-flow' muffler?

Yeah I think 5kW at the wheels is probably reasonable. The 8kW difference between Exec and Sports/VR-X/GTV (155 vs 163) is attributable to the muffler alone as far as anyone knows, but that's at the flywheel not the driving wheels.
