Hi Guys,

After some advice, My Magna cuts out randomly.

e.g.

It cuts out when it idels

Cuts out when I'm just cruising along between 0-100.

It only cuts out for about a full second but then seems to come fine. It had a service about 2 months ago.

I checked the spark plugs to see if one was stuffed, but they all looked fine to me(not black). Any suggestions/ideas/comments??

I talked to a mate down here in Tassie who has a skyline, he said to see if I could do a "diagnostics test on your cars ecu". Anyone know what that is? or how to do it on magnas?

Any help would be appreicated.

Kind regards,

Grant

Greetings All.

Yeah, I THINK your mate means, that you should get your car serviced, and while they do that, get them to check the ECU for errors...

Check your points and make sure your getting sparks in ALL areas there should be.

Is that something I need someone else to do? Or is it possible for myself to check that?

Last resort is to get it serviced again!

Ok matey,
Just a few things, firstly the car runs off electrics so if you are good with electricity then try a few tests below, if not go to an ultra-tune or other fixed price service place, try this link
http://www.troublecodes.net/mitsu/

for how to test codes. (they do fixed price repairs so you can get a quote....
It sounds like it may just be a loose connection on the distrubutor or EFI.
try to track it down with a meter, check all connections and also check for cracks in the dizzy cap or even the rotor button. Despite what they say all you are looking for is a constant read pattern. Check each injector lead for the constant pattern

Check and clean the fuel filter also, very important and can cause this fault.

Check for continuity in ya leads and then check for constant specific power from distributor.
Should be about 14.3-14.4v output
If it keeps going I would suggest you re-check the codes may be a faulty injector but this usually gives a miss not cut-out altogether If all else fails and you can't track it down and it gets progressively worse check the ECU for burn or scorch marks on the board, be careful as these are extremely sensitive to static and you will need to earth it to yourself.
Good luck

Just a quick note I don't think magna's have points but a module under the rotor button
I haven't had one for a while (2.6 that is)

I can't recall in the 2.6 but I'm pretty sure it's a module which if it is giving a fault you may be up for about $250 for the part and 30 mins labour
cheers

I have the exact same problem in my old Toyota Tercel 4cyl, carb. All I did was up the idle speed 100rpm as a quick fix. It drives fine but sometimes at idle it will cut out. Afer uping the idle speed I found that the revs dropped to about 200 and nearly died but then jumped back to life.

All of the leads and plugs are fine and there is no stutter or loss of power (you can notice any power loss when you have less than 60hp at the fly!) when driving...leaves me stuffed...but I have a feeling it may be the dizzy...its the only thing I havent checked properly yet.

Not long after I posted the first post, I had go for a drive(work). And well I ended up on the side of the road in the middle of tassie.

The car cut out and wouldn't start back up. I left it 5-10mins started it up again and she went fine for about 10mins. However it then stopped and I couldn't get it going again.

I ended up getting one of my mates to get a car trailor and we put it on there. As I was quoted $88 for a tow truck. Took 5 of us to push the car onto the trailor, after waving some people down.

Took it into "the Automotive Workshop" in Hobart, and the guys in there took about 15mins to fix. The "Ignition module" had died. I thought it might of been the fuel pump, but no it was the "small" "Ignition module" ($100). One that was replaced it went like a dream.

I was pretty impressed by "the Automotive Workshop" .......I recommend them.

Cheers everyone for your help. =)

Hope this thread helps people in the future.

For those interested, there is a tech sheet on www.madmagna.com in the tech pages on the diagnostic codes, how to check them and what they mean

Had half a tank. From what I've heard, fuel injected cars shouldn't ever run low on petrol, coz its dodgy for some reason.
