When my car idles it sometimes make a noise like it the tappets or something. But when you put your foot on the clutch, it stops.

It sounds like the thrust bearing to me.......anyone thinks so before I rip out the gearbox for nothing lol

the thrust bearing isn't doing anything when the clutch isn't pushed in. i just sits there chillin out with the input shaft having a pepsi or somefin. once u put ur clutch in and it makes noises then its ur thrust bearing. perhaps your clutch peddle isn't adjusted properly and its slightly pushing on the clutch springs and under no load, in that case they will mostly all be noisy anyway. i could have taken pictures to explain how it works but i just put my gearbox back on today

It sounds like a bearing though.....but I could be wrong.
Any other bearings in there???

is it DEFINATLY from that area? it could be a alternator bearing (there are two in there) or water pump or oil pump

It is definately from the gearbox
Once my missus put her foot on the clutch it goes away and comes back whenever it likes
I was under the bonnet when she did it too.

I was leaning towards Drax and Booya - being the thrust bearing..

had an XD which used to do this. wasn't a bad noise, kinda dull and not very noisy.. It occurred after we changed the clutch/bearing etc. I was told by many at the time that it would only be the bearing.. and it went away after a short period (weeks). When no foot on clutch you got noise, but then just slightly push the pedal in and as the clutch first began to move the noise stopped. let it back out and noise started again.

Thats it!!!
But the noise in mine doesn't come back straight away. Drive it for say around 30mins and it will most likely come back

It always makes noise as soon as you start the car in the morning when its cold aswell

I get the exact same thing. It rattles it bloody head off something shockin when the clutch is out, but as soon as you put it in, it stops. I spoke to my dad, who is a truck mechanic, and he said it it most likely the thrust bearing, but could also be either the spigot race(small bearing in the middle of the flywheel that your g/box input shaft sits in), or the input shaft bearings. Either way, its not getting looked at unless it fails big time, or the clutch goes. Mines pretty loud and rattly too.

Myne is the same, it pisses me off big time. It sounds like a clunking tappet noise, untill the clutch is in. I was going to take it back to mitsubishi but, i might just wait untill i get a new clutch as mitsu will proabably complain about the mods :doubt:

As above, if with light pressure on the pedal the noise goes away it is the input shaft bearing in the gear box.
If the noise is not there when foot off and starts when foot on clutch then it is the thrust bearing.

The gear box, with car stationary and clutch dis engaged is pretty much motionless.
