hey guys, this is my first post here,

i own a 1996 El Fairmont Ghia but the petrol prices are killing me, so its for sale, and i recently got a Tr Magna Elite,

its a bit gutless compared to the 4ltr tickford six in my el, but its a nice clean comfortable car

but its got a really annoying vibration, its a 2.6ltr auto, this vibration only happens when its in gear and at idle, also a little bit when taking off but it dissapears,

some engine mounts have been replaced but this didnt fix the problem, ive been told that it may be the torque convertor and a rough estimate was around $500, i dont want to spend money on hunches,

has anyone had this problem with their tr's? every 4 cyl tr ive driven has the same prob, and its really annoying, it takes the quality away from an otherwise nice car

any info or help will be greatly appreciated!!

Im no mechanic, but id suggest a good ol service? and get the timing checked, which should be part of the service.

If its rough idling, it could be a number of things. There are a few posts in here about that, so try doing a search you might find something. just type in "rough idle" or something..

thanks for the help mate, but it definatly isnt rough, its a vibration, its like im driving down a real crappy dirt road, except im sitting at the lights, and it only does it when its in gear, if i shift to park or neutrel its smooth as

i know how you feel, i went from using parents 94 Ef to the 2.6 (cept mines older), i also had/have the shudder sittin at lights! I got my injectors cleaned which helped, replaced my ecu cos that was apparnetly caput, but even now its not perfect, but still better. I'd say try the injector clean first, cant harm, better fuel econ too.
My grandads 2.6 idles so smoooooth! mind u with 80k on the clock so it should :) I miss the 4L 6 :(

Heaps of TR's do that. I've been in 4 of them (2 being my own) and they all vibrate. It's just a TR thing, quite noticable in the autos. Get an exhaust and you wont notice it lol . With my auto wagon we cleaned up the enitre engine with gunwash (for a totally different reason) and it still did it. And that car went as hard (or as little) as it ever did.

yeah all astron engined magnas seem to do it in my experience.. If its a really bad vibrations then it could be the engine mounts.. but if its just a light vibration at idle then its just saynig to you "hi im a 4cyl magna"

Poss had the balance chain bypassed as these are a problem.

Not sure if you are ok to work on cars however a torque converter would not be much from a wrecker.

Also make sure the T Body is clean as this idle can be from the engine idling low due to this being dirty which is often the case

My car used to vibrate like you wouldn't believe, but after 3 bottles of wynns spitfire and a service it's practicaly gone.

also you can try raising your idle 100-200 rpm, that shuold smooth it out also

The Astron isn't as smooth as a inherntly balanced straight six cylinder so I supposed you can't really compare it to that.

However you should have the engine mounts checked out. Mine does the same in gear but not idle and it's just a couple of old mounts dying.

Also I can't see how the Astron is more fuel eff. than the 4 litre Falcon motor ?

belive me guys, after owning the 4 ltr for a year and a half, then jumpin in the 2.6 ltr, ive noticed a big difference,

the ford takes around $60 to fill (roughly)

where as the magna takes around $45 to fill, and i get the same kays out of the tank, i know roughly $15 a week doesnt sound much, but its a BIG help, especially when your on apprectice wages!

in that case, not bad! guess its just my old chugger that chews it all up for minimal output!

Just leave it alone if you dont mind the rough idling. Had an tn 2.6 auto for 6 years 96-02, it vibrates at idle, never try to correct the problem. Still goes fine with no problems with it for 6 years.

my old TR was pretty bad on fuel for a 4cyl but its still better then a 4l falcon 6! a VS commodore kills both of them though with fuel economy though!

yeah the 2.6's uses has a similar fuel consumption as the 3.0's, but compare to commodores and falcon;s its heaps more economical to run

yeah but i DO mind the rough idle, thats the point of asking what the prob could be, caus it annoys the **** out of me lol

could possibly be one of the engine mounts give that a check

Yeah, my magna does this too. At traffic lights I pop my car into neutral so the vibration stops
