Im trying to find prices on engines that i can put into my gfs old 92 model magna.
it has the pissy 2.4litre and is about to throw in the towel and rather than getting rid of it i wouldnt mind fixing it up as an everyday driver.
I was trying to find out how hard it would be to drop a later model 3.5litre V6 and what the engines were like cost wise.
If searched through this forum and a few others and cant find prices on these engines or anyone that knows if it is possible.
Feel free to link me to any sites or even older threads which i may not have found that can help.
Thanks.
Ni
Forget the 3.5. It faces W-E instead of E-W.
There aren't really that many options. You can probably drop the VR4 motor in, or the 3 litre V6, be it SOHC, DOHC, or twin turbo. How much do you want to spend?
..GONE..

Take a look at the 6G72 DOHC or the 6G72TT from the 3000GTs/GTOs.. I think you may be able to fit them in.. Thats if you're talking about the TR/TS series Magna.

Being 92 it'll be a TR model, they had a 2.6 4cyl (sorry just had to set you on the right track there :D), the 2.4 is in the later TE 96+ models
You can swap to the SOHC 12v 6G72 3.0l V6 or the DOHC 24v 6G72 3.0l V6 (if you can find one!) but you will have to move the left hand engine mount as it is slightly out to the V6 configuration. If you do a quick search for DOHC 6G72 you'll find tons of info on what you need to do etc etc.
I did the swap from a SOHC 12v to the DOHC 24v and whilst it bolted in, there were still quite a few headaches (electrical problems).
Your easiest and best bet, is to put your money together and buy a V6 TR/TS. I know people love to do engine swaps etc, but in a practical sense, it'd be easier to go that way.

I am with killbilly on this one, that is the easiest swap for you, the 12v 3.0l v6 out of ts magna.

thanks for the quick responses guys...
i like the idea of the TT V6 from the GTO :D my dad had one of them and i learned to drive manual in one.... very fun car but very very overpriced here in oz. But the 3litre 6 sounds more realistic.
basically its a free car so i will probably spend upwards of 6k which will hopefully include a brake upgrade from a later model magna if possible... will keep searching and reading up.

ok... i had it all wrong.. its not even a 92... i think lol
i just had a look in the generation section and it looks more like the 1st gens :D
so does that make a difference?

yes it does...I dont think the SOHC 12v 6G72 will fit.

maybe an fto engine should drop straight into it

I've heard of people doing VR4 swaps to 1st gens, dont know how true that is, could be a load of crap...or it could be spot on.

well 2lt v6 will fit in ive seen a 98 lancer with it but either way v6 will be the go
The FTO V6 non-Mivec should fit. It's a direct fit in Galants, and the VR4 engine is a near enough to dammit direct fit into the first Gens.
Note, that this is hypothetical.
The VR4 is a bolt in, the gearboxes bolt up (though, the Magna gearbox will last precisely 7 seconds...)
If it's an Astron, and not threatening to go pop, try turbocharging it. That's in your financial constraints, and they'll run 12psi on stock internals. 16psi with stronger rings.

hmmmmm... i think the FTO V6 sounds the go.
i'll have a look around and see how much i can get the engine for as well as a newer gearbox... altho i wouldnt mind a manual.

What would hold a Mivec back from fitting?

Are they oriented differently in the engine bay redav? Maybe that's why?

Well, the do look different but we'd need to check out it's actual orientation. I thought the difference would onyl have been the heads but if it's orientated 180 degress out of whack, then that would explain why the Ralliart get's the Mivec FTO LSD and not a non-Mivec one.

ive been searching quite a lot online for anyone that may have done this engine swap before and if anyone has used the mivec engine or not... not having much luck.
will keep looking tho
I think it's 180deg out of whack. I'm not absolutley sure, though I do know the gearboxes don't mount up at the same point in the FTO's. I can stand to be corrected, however.

i cant find much on it... i think i will leave it and instead build up a Galant VR4 for rally.
Be different...
THAT motor's a bolt in, and the Galant GSR gearbox seems to hold it, for FWD
