View Full Version : TJ Series II AWD Sports sounds 'tiny'??

Hello guys and gals.....This is my first post.....and second Magna.... :D

I recently purchased a second hand TJ Series II AWD Sports with the 5-speed tip-tronic transmission. Its build date is November 2002. It has done 17 000 km. I suspect it was a factory Demo and then used by one of the Executives. It was first registered to the factory in late Nov 2002.

The query I have relates to the sound of the engine/exhaust. When I drive with the window down and particularly down a street with high fences or into a driveway I can here a 'tinny' sound especially under acceleration. I think it is coming from the engine and is distinct from the normal exhaust note, which is a low rumble with the sports exhaust. It is hard to describe it more precisely. I do not notice it with the windows up. It is mainly an aesthetic thing (only I hope) and is spoiling my enjoyment a little.

Newbie question I know......

yeah mate i have noticed this ever since new with my TL magna too, it was annoying the crap out of me untill i heard it in a TJ magna that i was borrowing from the dealership while mine was being serviced, so i just assumed it was a "magna" sound and have ignored it ever since.

Im pretty sure we are talking about the same sound.. i would discrive it as a tinny rattly engine noise under acceleration, distinct from the exhaust, only heard when windows up.. and thats remarkably close to how you explain it.. so we must be!

You mean "tinny" ?

I'm not sure, but in regards to sound under acceleration, i hear a loud low-down roar, which i think may be the induction noise, although ive never drove a car with such a loud induction noise before. By the way it doesnt have a sports exhaust, and still the stock induction with a plain air filter. Anyone else's Magna makes this sort of sound?

thats defently not the sound i hear.. i cant hear any induction noise in my magna

 maybe if i put a pod filter on the induction noise will drown out my annoying tinny sound :D

me going shopping tomorrow!

Don't know if this is the same but i had a tinny / rattle on my TJ sportz. The dealer replaced the headers as the baffles in the manafold were ratteling or something.

You will always get tinny sounds due to the long flex pipe used. If you want it fixed, stop the flex pipe from vibrating! HOW? it's not worth it, just live with it or turn up the stereo, or make the exhaust louder or make the induction louder to mask the tinny rattles.

It shouldn't be due to the header heat shield unless it's loose.
It shouldn't be the CAT unless it's shuttered.

I can only think of the flex pipe, I've broke my flex pipe before, and it went from a tinny sound to a loud ticking. Changed the flex pipe, and went back to the tinny sound.

sounds logical to me, thanks

Don't know if this is the same but i had a tinny / rattle on my TJ sportz. The dealer replaced the headers as the baffles in the manafold were ratteling or something.

I've had the same problem. There's a plate or something in the headers where the two banks merge and apparently it comes loose and rattles when accellerating and decellerating (in gear). Although there seems to be a tinny noise there even after I got that fixed, but it wasn't nearly as bad.

I have the same problem with my VRX and have had the flex pipe replaced twice under warranty. It still happens to date, but it is not as bad as before.

I find I can hear it more noticeably if I am decelerating in 2nd gear and occasionally when I change from 1st to 2nd.

I have just decided to live with it. :)

I know the exact sound you are describing ,I have it in my tj sports have heard that a plate in the headers or thereabouts cracks and causes this noise and that mitsi arent too keen to admit it.But when we took it in for the 45000 service we told them bout the rattle (not what i had heard) and they investigated and said they could find nothing wrong but that they had orderd a new exhaust (header i think) and they will ring me when they get it .Got a call on mon (5 days later) to say that it is here and when did we want to book it in?So it goes in tomorrow to have it fitted will let you know how i go....................but my question is why would you order a new part of exhaust if you found there was nothing wrong with it ?????

well the Mitsu dealer has ordered a new front section of the exhaust ....would not tell me exactly what......said it was causing the tinny rattle.....but its not in stock at the Adelaide wharehouse (odd don't u think?)

so it looks like for now its not the flex pipe

for the record I have had the rear windscreen replaced (due to the paint peeling around the window seal) and a new radio ordered since the current one hums when the lights are on......all under warranty

thks for all the info guys ....really helps when confronting the dealer...... :bowrofl:

None in wharehouse we had ours done yesterday got everything from the cat forward its only been a day but no noise !(crosses fingers)
just read your first post and realised that yours is a awd mine isnt dont know if there is any difference or not

There's two flex pipes in front of the CAT, then there's the cast iron headers wraped in heatshield, and about 2 flanges.

so either you've got a crack so it's leaking, or one of more of the flanges are leaking or the heatshield is loose or you've got a flex pipe that's getting loose. Which will happen sooner or later.

spoke to the dealer again today......they have ordered the entire front section of the exhaust from the manifold to the CAT?

mistsu still saying the part is not in stock and nor do they have an idea from the supplier (Tenneco Automotive?) when one will become available.......

I have an AWD so this part will be different from FWD and may explain the lack of stock (how many TJ sports AWD?). The dealer explained a bit more today and he reckons its probably the deflector plate (problem with spot welds) rattling around (This is situated where the two pipes join the one pipe  ) He reckons maybe 3 or 4 cars in 100 will have the trouble but I am not sure how precise this is.......but put it this way its not worth Mitsu recalling it as it affects so few (??) vehicles and this is the cheaper solution for them as I guess a lot of punters do not ever follow it up or get fobed off by the dealer :slap:

Had this same problem fixed 1.5 months ago,
mine sounded more like a buzzing from the engine and
could be heard from inside only at 1700 to 1800rpm accel.
Service centre said it was around the exhaust manifold pipes.
Anyway thats fine after the fix, and he did say it was a known problem.

yes, on the front wheel drives... they still can't make a decent engine pipe.. the rattle comes from the flex pipe section.. this is on the tj's.. ive noticed on the TL's that when they rattle.. u will normally find that the cat convertor shield bolts become lose.. why?? i dunno.. seen it many times.. as for a recall on a noisy exhaust.. u must be kidding right?? if something superficial like an annoying noise calls for a recall.. no car in the world would ever be on the road, theyd all be in workshops getting repaired!

Mine used to do this too! It's a known problem with them. The way they described it to me is where the 2 main exhaust pipes from the headers join into 1 just near the cat there is a metal flap inside that comes loose and vibrates. It should only do between around 1500-2000 RPM.

Hey people!
This is my first post on this forum. I have TJ magna and exactly the same problem. I was just wondering what happens if you just leave it and not fix it. Is it bad for engine in any way??
Also does anybody now how much would it cost to fix (in the case there is no warranty)?

Cheers..

My dads tiptronic TJ2 Sports sounds tinny as hell under hard acceleration. I always just thought that it must be that 3.5L autos sound like sh!t lol

mine had a tinny sound when i reached about 2,800 rpm, pissed me off cos just before i was gonna change gears id get this **** sound before each gear. went to my exhaust guy and asked him about it. he said it was resonance. he said there wasnt much you can do, but he could put a resonator on there for $70 and it might quiten it a bit.

so i saud yeh **** it, had it done, now the sound doesnt come in until about 3,800rpm, so im a bit happier. maybe give it a go, good $70 well spent
