With that budget, you're not likely to get a TE in good condition that's also done less than 100k's. Look for one that's done around 180-200k's, but make sure you give it a good test drive and look it over. They're usually still pretty reliable cars even with that much travelled as long as they've been looked after properly. Check the service books, ask the owner how it's been driven (mostly city or highway driving?).
That's a tight budget, but have some patience and keep looking. You'll find a good one eventually.
I can spend up to 9k, but I want to get a new mp3 car headunit/speakers/alarm/insurance/transfer of ownership papers etc.
Looks like the money keeps going up and up...

for a car that age, average cars is worked out roughly 20,000k's per year
so your looking around 140 up.
to find 96/97 under 100k's gotta be dreamin, unless its some oldie who only drives to his local rsl 2 km away from his house :doubt:.
to find one and if found you'd be looking at 10k easy for such a car under 100k.
patience mate, best thing keep on the look took me about 2months looking . trading post carsales, car point, local paper, auction....
7-8 be the price buddy for one thats been well looked after anywayz but you never know someone may need to sell asap, and is just around the corner....
ppl tell me Private isnt the way to buy? Im just wondering is it ok to buy from private or not.
Ive found a 96 TE V6 done 155 and they want 6860 (car yard) for it.
Ill have a look at that car on tuesday and see how it will go.
Im hoping I will offer him/her 6k cash and he/she will say ok. *fingers crossed*

Generally, I'd consider private to be better. There tend to be better deals for better cars. Of course, there will be the odd lemon so you gotta be careful. If you do decide to go to a dealer, be very wary of the salesperson as they tend to be quite crafty.
Car dealers do offer a statutory 3 month warranty (at least here in Vic), so that's one advantage of going with a dealership. I got my car from a private seller. I went to a few dealerships but mainly to get a feel for a lot of Magnas in one hit.

Look Private and Yards, take your Time looking for a good 1 check the condition on the body, tyres, etc.
Also,it's not always necessary to get a TE under 100,000,cause if it's near the low 90,000 k's or high 90,000 k's mark, you'll be up for the major service :doubt: If it's done around 110,000,you know the belts have been changed, new plugs have been put in etc.
Also,if you can, check under the motor for any oil leaks etc.and make sure you can get some written proof that the car has been serviced on a regular basis,ie.major services too.
1 more important thing get a MANUAL!!
Good luck man:)
