Check the welsh plugs for leaks.

Hole in the water pump?
My GF's mazda 121 had this problem untill I told her to get the mechanic to check the water pump.

Hi missks, as h45e said, check the water pump. Tell tale signs are a greenish residue on the
outside of the engine (passenger side).

Sounds like a head gasket to me. If the car is not losing water from the radiator, welsh plugs or hoses (easy to tell if there is a pool of coolant under the car), then it can only go two places. Into your oil or into your cylinders. If the oil is ok (not a milky or other crappy colour) then your no doubt losing coolant through your cylinders. Given the minute amount of coolant which would be leaking through, it would be burnt off in the combustion process with no ill effects to performace..yet. Given the RPM that engines operate at, even minute amounts of water leakage into the cyclinders can add up to a fair bit over time. If this is the case, then you will want to get this fixed asap before it becomes a blown head gasket. Taking care of this before its too late, would be financially wise.

If it is a head gasket, cant you just open the radiator and see if there is bubbles comming up??

Not necessarily. If it is a very small leak which this sounds like, then the bubbles may be undetectable. But, a reasonable guess would suggest that if this should be the head gasket then there should be bubbles and it is definitely worth checking. Afterall, if air is being vented back into the cooling system via the cylinder, it has to come out somewhere?

I'm with H45e i had a similar problem with my 90 Integra, i thought at first that i had cracked my radiator. Getting it looked at my mechanic found out that my water pump was gone. After i replaced it it was fine and has been running well since.

My advice would be to get it looked at as soon as possible! and find out what the cause is. Otherwise it will be an expensive exercise as many have mentioned previously.

Goodluck with the repairs,

Cheers

I just remembered I had a similar episode last year. The leak was just noticable that the
reserve tank will go down an inch in one weeks time. A friend of mine who was installing brake
pads noticed it and explained that that's why the reserve tank level was reducing. Got it
replaced and all's fine. Can't remember how much it costed me though.

there is a jeacket under that plenum, check that for leakes, in our old verada (1994) a water jacket had completely corroded away and it was causing all sorts of problems.

take it to a radiator shop, have them do a TK test to check for exhaust gasses in the coolant system. compression test the cylinders and look very well for leaks, if ur using coolant not just water you will be able to see where its been leaking because it dries and cakes on around leaks, plus you will smell burning coolant (and its very noticable)

i wouldn't be driving the car with a coolant leak of any sorts... replacement of cylinder heads is dam expencive, even if yuo do it yourself! find that problem before you drive it again.

pull it off and replace all the gaskets around it, gasket goo or propper gaskets. clean the pump right up and check if there is play in the bearing, if its excessive then just replace it, they are only about 90 bucks at the worst.
