Hi all...

I own a 1995 Verada Ei Sedan. Hopefully someone can help me...
There is this strange knocking or thudding sound from the front end....

The shock absorbers have been replaced... they needed doing anyhow... it improved
the performance and settled the noise slightly.... I've replaced the tie-rod ends which were completely worn... again improved.... but still....

It is more noticeable travelling anywhere between 10km/h and 80km/h...
For example... you can see little ripples or bumps in the road... the noise is heard from every little bump the wheel has gone over... it's very hard to explain...
the control arm bushes have been replaced because they were cracked...

No mechanic can pin point the problem... the only thing left is the bottom ball joint's which apparently you have to replace the entire lower control arm with the bush which I bet costs a fortune.........
It happens on both sides of the car...

Any ideas ? ? ? ?

Thanks :D

yeah it happens to my TS as well, but thats because its done 250,000 with none of the front shocks or anything else to do with the suspension changed....ever.

If its not the shocks, then I'm thinking the bushes and/or bump stops?

I know exactly what you mean and mine does exactly the same thing. I know my radius bushed are rooted, but this is also causing the whole front end to slap around under brakes. I'm getting them fixed next week, will find out then.

I am in Vic, bring it over mate and let me have a look.

I have a few suspicions on what it can be but would like to hear it before making the assumptions.

PM me if you are interested

worn control arm bushes is my guess, its bush related i imagine.

fulcrum do free suspension checks  just go there and then once they tell you what it is.. fix it yourself

It might be the top mount for the strut (I forget what its called).
When I had Pedders do some work on my TR they said the bearing might be worn allowing some up/down movement making a "knocking" sound over bumps.
They said it may be ok for awhile as they are a bit expensive to replace cos there aint no aftermarket ones around.
They may be wrong I havn't checked.
Take it to Pedders for a $14 checkup.

(But be prepared for the worst. I needed $1000 worth of new bushes and steering rack & pinion unit)

yeah been to pedders before... they replaced control arm bushes front and rear... they wanted to replace the shockers but i did that myself .... but yes the bearing on top of the strut i have been told may be the problem.... it's either that or the control arm ball joint...

I'm guessing upper strut mount. As someone said, the spherical bearing wears out.
I replaced mine on my Skyline, and the difference was night and day. Firmed un the front end a major amount, and that was with new shocks on before I did them.
I know OEM car stuff can be expensive, but I bought genuine Nissan strut mounts and they were $140 a pair. They also had new lower control arms, with bush and balljoints for $95 each.
I know they aren't Mitsubishi prices, but Nissan aren't known for being cheap either..so just a reference for you. Call up a Mitsubishi dealer and see...can't hurt! Also, the Nissan stuff will be a very similar size, so a good comparison.
In my experience, you are best off just replacing everything when you do front end work. You have to pull it all apart anyway, and the extra cost is worth it, and it's only a once every 100,000km expense.

Regards, Andrew.

If any owners of a TR/TS & KR/KS Magna/Verada have a clunking sound as noted earlier is this thread... I ended up replacing the strut insulators on the front...

the problem was the spherical bearing in the middle... my verada is so quiet now it's a dream come true.... something to look out for on your car when getting close to the 200 000 kms spot... as mine has 184 000 kms
