hey, all day 2day i was workin on the car and when i was finished i started the car as usual (i had the bonnet open) then i got out the car let it idel and to open the shed door i walked backed just checked under the bonnet when i started seeing smoke and shat my self and turned the car off to find where the smoke was coming from, i worked out it was the fusible link plug that runs 5cm from the positive termanal. the reason why there was smoke coming from it was becauase it was bloody hot so i wated till it cooled down then started the car again and held the plug it run cold till i reved the car and let it idal again to then it got to hot to touch again so i turned the car off, i thought maybe its the alternator runing to high so i got a multimeter and tested the voltage which the car going and it read 14v i also turned on the head lights and a/c and tested the voltage and it was around the 13v mark.....so what the hells going on this has come at the worst time im to scared to drive the car incase it catches on fire but it only heats up if u rev it even if u let it idal again the wires get to hot to even touch
any one got any ideas
thanx

Sounds like something is drawing heaps of current. First place i would head to is the alternator and regulator. I would say the regulator first since this has the next largest diameter cable in the car. It sounds like you may also have a bad connection in your charging circuit causing high resistance somewhere. If it were something else then you sure would have a fire, not at the fusible link but elsewhere where the problem is.

Can you have the car running and pull the lead from the alternator and see if the temperature of the fusible link drops?

EDIT - Check out this link : http://www.users.bigpond.com/jack_stands/automotive_advice/auto_electric/auto_elec_2.html

hey thanx for the reply......
i asked my autoelectrican 2day and he basicly said disconnet the alternator and drive it here.... so i did disconnect it and IT STILL did it so i still couldnt drive there for him to go over it.
but i think ive narrowd it down to the battury as i thought i might as well change it over with one of our other and to my surpise it worked the wire still got warm but only warm not hot and melting like it was b4 so 2morrow im off 2 get a new battury and hopefully that should fix the problem.........i did notice with the other battury that even tho i only got warm it still didnt get as hot and when i put the a/c + headlights it only got a slight bit hotter so i figure theres alot of current flowing threw which would heat it a lil light it is

oh yer i forgot to say the alternator was only replaced like 8months ago with a 2nd hand one cos my old one was shagged and the light stayed on all the time on the dash and we also put a brand new regulator in then too

oh thanks for the link Ralliart 410, i will check that over with the new battury

Kewl.... Normally a high resistance circuit causes the hot link and usually it's the charging circuit. Did you clean or better still, replace your battery terminals?

If it were a short then it would of taken out the link straight away so that is a good sign...

Maybe battery....

Nop i didnt get around to cleaning the terminals but i will 2morrow with the new battury for sure, i might even pop in to jaycar and get some nice gold terminals as i was meaning to get some new ones as the stock mitsi ones make it difficult to add wires for amp, lights etc

I got one of Jaycars gold battery terminals, mines for the positive terminal. It cost me $30, although being gold (plated) it doesnt corrode ever, theres 3 extra holes with screw in clamps to add wires to etc, and it provides a very good connection. Worth it if you have the money.

they are generaly a nickel alloy anyway, which increases conductivity and corrosion resistance. that stuff around terminals isn't corrosion and gold plated stuff wont stop that, cover the terminals in CRC or RP7, thatll keep em clean as long as you do it ever few months

woo the problem seems to be fixed.....i ended up getting our other battery and we got a new battery for the mazda so i can save up and get a better battery down the track.
i cleaned the terminals with a wire brush then put some petrolum jelly on the terminals and so far the wire doesnt get warm untill the whole engine bay gets warm but thats cos the fuseable links only like 10cms away from the coolent pipe and that gets warm after time but the wire doesnt even come close to as hot it was.
So 2morrow ill pop in to jarcar and get 2 of the gold clips cos i can now :P
