heres the stituation.
TP magna, 5sp manual.
lately i'm having trouble getting it into 3rd.
u go to push it into 3rd and it like jams and the stick seems to slide back 2wards 1st (in an arc shape). u have to let go of the stick and let it center itself in neutral then push it up. it really makes it hard to shift quickly.
it seems to get worse as the gearbox heats up ie. higher rpm work.
if its a cold night and u cruise around under 3000rpm then it wont do it, but i have a 6000rpm redline and i damn well want to use it (specially at work).
mmm nothing like the scream of a sports exhaust at redline leaving the domino's parking lot with those stupid light up signs on the roof.
Neway getting off topic. What are ur suggestions??? i dont know much at all about this type of thing, so am i wrong in guessing its the selectors are bent (so something)?????
Ne help would be great. and if ne1 has had this prob, how did u fix it and $$$???
Thanx guys.

Bent shift levers to me. Also have a look at the box oil level. Maybe the 3rd gear synchro ring is worn...
Start with the shifting mechanism - check for any wires or stuff near the box preventing it from shifting then work back to the lever in the floor. It's hard to bend something like this near the box... unless something got thrown up near the floor I'd lean towards the synchro ring. :(

Worn synchro ring = rebuild gearbox. I don't of any other way to get around it, you have to pull the guts out of the box to get to the synchro rings so you may as well rebuild the thing. How much rebuilt manual boxes are I don't know. Maybe you could get a good secondhand one and put that in. :?
This is IF it's a worn synchro ring, I'd still check the shift levers first - you could have had a big rock get thrown up that bent a lever slightly. ;)
Is your 2.6 a rebuilt one? If not then I shudder to think of one being revved to 6k RPM...

yeah its a recon. got put in like 2 years ago.
i'll take it down to rocky manual gearbox and diff and see what they think.
On the plus side it could be a good chance to get a bigger, stronger box put in for my future mods :D
the 2.6's rev out to 6g with a little bit of pushing no probs but the harmonic balancer and the timing chain doesnt like it - out 2.6 has just started to get the dreaded timing chain rattle when you start it and im thinking this is due to it being wound out to 6g occasionally as it didnt have it before... we have only wound it out to 6g about 5 or 6 times (that i know of anyway - when wendy gets dragging who knows what goes on :))
other than that these engines are great - not to mention that once you get it up to 6g all the energy you have going really gets ya going when you change gears

took her in to the gearbox place.
He seems to think its the syncro going. i'm up for 800 for a rebuild or replacement with a 2nd hand box.
It'll have to get on the end of the list. and its a LONG list.
Shop around mate - now you know whats wrong with it it really shouldnt cost ya that much - id say $250-$300 for a second hand manual off of a wreck, and maybe $200 labour TOPS!
ive dropped out and changed the clutch in a TS 4cyl, which has got the same motor as yours and seriously it only took an hour out, and probably about the same to bolt it back up..
especially since these things are a dime a dozen and every wrecking yard has 10 tm-tp series magnas each i would be a bit pissed off paying $800..
just my take on that dude..

i'm getting my auto converted to a manual for $650, tell the gearbox mechanic to stick his quote where it came from (out of his ass) and go somewhere else

I was going to hazard a guess of $500 - $800 for rebuilt box. My TN auto was quoted $650 for 2nd hand replacement inc. labour.
If you're confident with the spanners (or you have a mate who is) then take a weekend off and have a go at it yourself using the Gregory's for reference.
Until then you'll just have to treat her gently, rev it a bit more in 2nd and go straight to 4th if you don't want to use 3rd, if you do then there'll be no race-changes for you - slow & steady is the go. Give it a blip on the throttle on 4-3 downchanges too - it helps.
