View Full Version : Difference between TR and TS wheels

OK guys,
I know TR came stock with 14" wheels, and TS came stock with 15's.
Now what i wanna know is, do the TS wheels have a lower profile tyre or are they the same thickness as TR but with the 15" (making them an inch wider all the way around). Cuz i'm thinking of getting 17" mags and making the rubber an inch thicker than my stock profile (so whatever profile i'm meant to have make it an inch bigger). This is because it will make my car look an inch lower, and if the TS has bigger wheels i can just grab whatever measures the speed in a TS and put it in my TR to stop any speedo inaccurcies. I dont know how the speedo works, but any help on this matter would be great. Maybe if i cant swap stuff outer the TS theres another way of making my speedo more accurate with the thicker tyre?
ermmmm
the TS has bigger RIMS (15") with a lower profile tyre, the overall diamater (OD) of the wheel (rim & tyre) remains the same as that on TR (14").
When u change the Overall Diamater of your wheel u make your speedo inaccurate, so attempting to "lower" your car by reducing profile, will make your speedo crap. The amount of money yur gonna spend on 17" mags with a profile that much lower, u might aswell get the right profile tyres to keep the correct OD, and buy a set of Low springs for $200-$250.
The TS did not have 15" stock, at least not in the EXEC form. The SE came with 15" alloys and
the KS Veradas came with 15" alloys.

vlad's right. My TS Exec came standard with 14's

By increasing the sidewall by 1" you are increasing rolling diameter by 2" which is around 50mm and definately illegal (max change is +/- 15mm allowable). Furthermore it's expensive, impractical, and just stupid.

My Bro's TS has 15" stock on it  . Thats why i assumed they were bigger, but if the tyre is a lower profile then damn.
What i meant by my first post is, RAISE the profile i'd need for a perfect speedo by an inch, cuz i'm gonna have to buy low profile tyres anyway for 17's. I just want to know how hard it is to change the speedo, i know people have done it and my mate reckons all you need is a $5 gear in the transmission replaced (dunno how true that is).

The speed sensor essentially counts the number of revolutions on the final drive shaft gear to determine the speed. Ignoring on how the whole shebang works, to adjust the speed displayed you'd only need to add the correct sized resistor in between the sensor and speedometer. Unless you're a professional, you'll end up having to trial and error on what size resistor to use. Many end up buying a variable resistor and adjusting it whilst cruising, then once set, just hide the variable resistor so that no one touches it.

You're missing the point TR Envy, aside from not being roadworthy, it would just look blatantly stupid and give you nightmares with suspension clearance? If you get bigger wheels reduce the profile accordingly.

Im pretty sure the TS V6's all came with 15's, and the 4 cyl had the 14's...

My brothers TR V6 came stock with 15" rims

my Tr came with 15inch wheels and a 14inch spare. anyone know how much a 15inch rim costs?

-All V6 models came with 15" as stock
-All 4Cyl models are 14"
Thats for all 2nd Gens.
TR Envy i got confused reading your explaination of what you want to do.
But what everyone else is saying about changing the speedo is right, it makes more sense to just get the right dimensioned tyres. Just for peace of mind at least. Do you really wanna put in some 5buk thingo in your transmission??
Anyway, what kinda rims are you planning on getting?

My bro's car is a V6 TS so maybe the 6's came out with 15's and the 4's came out with 14's. Sorry tek didnt see your first post until now, i didn't realise it was illegal, was just curious whether it could be done. Thanks for all your help guys if you raised some light on the subject, so you guys all agree that the 15" wheel has the same overall width as the 14", cuz if i buy mags and get the right size tyre accordingly, will i have to get new tyres if i upgraded to say, a TE or TF?

lol gerard seems i'm following you through the forums atm, i'm thinking of getting 5 spoke 17" rims. Ones like the XR6 ones would be cool, but any 5 spoke that show a decent amount of space between the spokes and dont look ugly.

Depending on what the stock overall diameter of the new car is, you may or may not have to.

Use this site, its handy.

Ah yea, 5 spokes are pretty popoular, they look good on our cars. The XR6 ones are aiight.
Id suggest the VRX Series II rims, theyr the ones ive wanted on mine since forever now, but have never had the money for em
Theyd look the best on a 2nd Gen, in my opinion.
But yea, anything would look better than your current fake chromies lol
jk :P
Hey if you want 'basic' rims, im sellin mine

If they are 5 spoke and 16-17" i'm interested, otherwise show me some pics and i'll decide then. Nothing beats my fake chromies mate, NOTHING! :P

I think people got confused when you said width instead of overall diameter. The OD of 205/65
R15 is actually 2.3% bigger than the 185/75 R14 OD but Mitsu won't change the gearing and
speed sensors to compensate for that as there is a tolerance for that. You are only travelling
1.4km/hr faster on 15's than on 14's.
Both 225/50R16 tyres on 16" wheels and 225/45R17 tyres on 17" wheels match OD to
185/75R14 tyres on 14" wheels but you can't use these tyres with their respective wheels on
the 3rd gens because they have a high minimum load rating.
If you want to match the OD to 15" wheels then you need 225/55R16 tyres on 16" wheels
which are expensive tyres due to the profile been 55. Using 225/50R17 tyres on 17" wheels
match OD of the stock 15" wheels with 205/65R15 tyres and should have the required min
load rating for use on the 3rd gens.

Not only that, but as I said before, I did want to put 225/55's on my 16" rims, but my tyre place wouldn't let me because the width of the is too much for my rims. The main reason I wanted that was because I wanted a lower profile so the darn things would stop scraping my plastic underguards (it wasn't bad for the car, but it was annoying whenever you turn in and I didn't want to make a even bigger hole in it) and also so my speedo would be more accurate
If you find 16x7 rims, then please advise!

What do you mean the width of the tyre is too much for your rims. What size rims were they?
225 wide tyres should fit rims from 6" wide to 8" wide and 7" being the ideal rim width. I've got
225/50R16 tyres on my 16x7" rims. I get a little bit of scraping of the front guards so I used
cable ties to pull them forwards a little and now they don't scrape.

Yeah I think i've gotten myself confused now :D . The rims I think are either 16x6 or 16x6.5, havn't been able to determine it yet. Just that the guy didn't recommend putting 225's on my rims because my steering would become dead and slow. He says that 225's were designed for use on 7" rims. But i'm unsure of it all now, I took his word for it then, and I really needed rubber.
To stop the guards from scraping I used a couple of cable ties as well, and it worked well when I only had 20% thread left, but it doesn't work to well now with new rubber. Mind you, you've got 50 profiles, i've got 60's.
