here it is with a bit of imagination anything can work! this was done one weekend few mths ago. benifits were WELL WORTH IT. all up costed $60 and i hated that stock carby airbox to death

and no water doesnt get up it ive driven it in the rain many times and over puddles unless water can travel right angeles and verticly in a ribbed pipe id like to see that. very much noticable on the freeway and speeds over 60km/h nice crisp throttle response.

just wondering, where did u get that white flex piping....i've been looking for something similar but to no avail......

that white flex piping is used for houses when they install ducted air con/heating. you can bend it anyway you like and it extends to about 3meters fully. a mate found some at a construction site (they were throwing it away) but my guess bunnings would have it.

Yeah, Bunnings have it, they are about $24~27 for about 10 feet

i was just wondering what you used to connect the big pipe there to the top of the carby

that rubber bend i got from the wreckers. it was off a EFI ford EA series, it was a rubber bend which joined the air box to the throttle body from memory, if you find a ford you will kno wat i mean. cost me about $8. obviously id not not fit striaght on, got a stanly knife cut it to size so it would fit (it was sitting too high couldnt close bonnet) and gave it a good wash.

another issue which was overcome was that rubber bend had 3" openings either end, that is fine for the pod side, but the carbys mouth was 2.5". to mount it securly i drilled a hole in the bend and used the butterly screw to hold it on securly and a hose clamp at the bottom to make a fairly good seal. it aint goin no where.

the 3" pipe got from a exhaust shop i was charged $10 for about 40-50cm of 3" pipe. the most expensive thing you guessed it was the pod itself.

nice resoursefulness mate, looks good, but ide put a box around that pod.

yeh i thought so too but not really needed. too meet EPA requirements yes it has to be in an enclosed box. the pod is so far away from the engine and does not get hot to make an noticable effect on performance. you can touch the pod and its ambient temp, even after thrashing it. it also would be tricky mounting a box there but then not impossible.

think of it this way if you put a 1.25lt coke bottle with a hole at the end of it and put it to your mouth and sucked hard, you would have a hard time as your lungs can draw more than 1.25lt of volume when ur fully sucking on it - the bottle will be bend inwards.

same sorta deal with a car, if you were to make a box it would have to take into account how much volume of air is drawn per stroke. adding a box might gain a tiny bit of low end grunt, but you loose a lot top end as its restrictive, the hp gain (if any is not noticable anway).

low end im not toooo concerned its ok down there, top end i left it like that so it can breathe as much as it wants without being restricted by the fixed volume of air of a box. 4,000 - 6,000rpm its quite nice, induction noise is the loudest around 3000 - 3200rpm can hear the carby secondaries open from a good distance away.

edit - also when im not running nitromethanol, i inject shots of methanol under wide open throttle. this cools the air being fed into the engine as well. gives the engine and carb a good clean as well. to get the idea put a fan near your face and squirt a fine mist of water and its quite cool. a good cooling effect. this also adds to very crisp throttle response.

picture this, you have two throttle bodys, 1 is 34mm and another is 36mm. including venturies this adds up to a lot less air thru put than a box around the pod will matter :doubt:

that would b a really good setup if, like jason said, there was some sort of a box around the pod. personally, the white piping just looks dodgy. like its just thrown in there. obviously it serves a purpose (a mate did the exact same sorta thing with his old holden astra bout a year and a half ago) and he took it off cause it looked so dodgy.

have u thought about moving ur battery to the boot perhaps? that would leave alot more room to devise a CAI system. could a stock efi air box be modded to fit around the pod perhaps? obviously then u can cut a hole for the white piping to sit nicely into. im sure this air box wouldnt cost much at all.

sorry, i dont mean to sound like im coming into ur thread and dissing wat u have done cause it is a great idea and it is one of the best ways i have ever seen a CAI system done on a carby. im just a big fan of things looking like they are meant to b there etc... the white piping just dosent do it for me. for $60 i got an open air circular filter that slotted directly ontop of my XF weber carb. $30 or so for vents and i have cold air flowing straight into my carby. though, i can spray the vents and respray my bonnet by myself which saves abit of money.

nice work on the car so far though... under ur bonnet looks alot cleaner and less messy than wat mine looks like. i think i have about 5 different colours under my bonnet.

yeh i see your points all which were taken into account when doing this. there is not a lot of room at all to fit anything there. even a box would be pushing it. i will look into a stock airbox to see if it would fit, and the white pipe true it looks dodge, but i was gonna paint it black but then thought wtf i dont care lol, just painted the visiable section outside so its less obvious.

movin the battery would be good but i dont like the idea of it in my boot unless it was a sealed battery and running a +ve wire over a earthed body for a good distance of 3m im paranoid. if it shorts it aint 1 fuse thats gonna go.

the path which i most likely will take is go to wreckers and see some stock airboxes and get one.

today i hopefuly finish my shift kit install. tests have gone quite good. the auto shifts insane, no need for "manualy" shifting it. pop it into D and plant it. im sure my 0-100 times will drop.

Looking good mate, i agree with Brendan, i reckon you need to paint that white thing, it looks so out of place!!

Look forward to hearing how the Auto shift kit goes!!
