Hi guys..

After an incident in a shopping centre car park, my (parents') car has some pretty bad scratches/gouges from the left rear passenger door to the top of the wheel arch.

My parents and I don't see any real point in getting it fixed (it'd probably cost more than what the car is worth), so what I need to do is prevent the body from rusting, and make it look a little bit more friendly on the eyes...

What should I do? It's a KS Verada EI (pretty sure it's a KS anyway), and it's the charcoal black colour - does anyone know where I can get replacement paint for it?

In case you hadn't already figured, I'm a newbie to the car maintenance scene, so comprehensive instructions would be nice ;)

What about that "wax" that has colour in it, would that help?

Gday..

I doubt it... these aren't your everyday scratches that can be buffed out

I'm guessing the rough bits will have to be sanded off, and some paint applied... but that was a very obvious guess..

lol thats exactly what happened to mine, scrapped the left rear passanger door and mangled a section of the wheel arch on my fence going into my carport. Also seen another ts wagon with exactly the same damage. Yours is even the same colour as min. I reackon it must be some sort of common blind spot/ width misjudge thing with these magnas.
I now watch that corner everytime i go into my carport or parking some where thats similar.

I did mine 2 months ago, still havn't bothered to get it fixed. Prolly wont until i take holidays early next year.

Get yourself the biggest aussiemagna sticker you can and hope you can cover it...

P.S. You will need two, one for the other side so they are matching...

Yep looks almost exactly the same as mine, except I didn't go as far along the wheel arch. I just mangled the bit that the door curves around.

It sucked coz i only had myself to blame for not concentrating. But hey im using it as an excuse to get all the door bump strips colour coded and prolly the front grill aswell

Yeah I only have myself to blame as well.. only this time, I have to fix it!

Does anyone know the colour code, or should I just ask a dealer?

I scratched mine almost as badly as that not too long ago. Only cost me $250 to get it fixed. If you shop around hard enough, you should be able to find a good deal around your area.

For those who haven't done this sort of work on their cars ....

Kmart (used to?) carry a good range of panel repair tools and consumables, I think the brand was Bodytech. To encorage people like us to have a go Bodytech put out a great 1 hour video how-to. - It sold for $12 in 2001.

When watching this video I couldn't figure out who the young guy was that was doing all the panel work but I had a distinct feeling I new the face. At the end of the tape his girlfriend arrived to pick up her repaired car. It was Mrs Brock and the repairer was ofcourse a 25 year old Peter.

So when people ask how I learned to do panel repairs, I tell them Peter Brock taught me.

The video appeared to be a re-master of an old 16mm film the like of which were prodeced in the 70's by Victoria TAFE. As you'd expect its very thorough and very good to the point where complete novices with 10 thumbs can take care of these sort of scratches after watching the video twice.

If you don't like scratches and dings on your car it would be worth chasing down a copy. If Kmart don't have it try tracking down Bodytech.

Mine has been loaned to so many friends since that I now don't know where it is.

On the other hand if you can get the repairs done for $250 - $300 its worth having it done by the panel shop.

Cheers
John

Yup. If you search for my thread (it's somewhere!), I posted pics of the damage.
It took a while to find such a cheap panel shop, most of them were $500-700.
So I was worried whether this guy would do a good job for $250, but it came out superb.

no doubt SOMEONE you know knows a panelbeater/spraypainter

you could probably get it fixed up mates rates for pretty cheap.

(i have a guy who does my stuff, was quoted less than 500 to paint the bonnet, bootlid, front bumper, rear bumper, and repair a dent in the wheelarch, would cost about 4 times that from a bodyshop)

Hey did yours actually have dents where the scratches were? or just scratches? Coz on mine there is three big marks where each plank of the fence scraped along the door which also pushed the door in where each of the marks are.

Sorry for hijacking your thread a bit jappy.

Yeah there were a lot of small dents along the wheelarch.
There were also some nasty scratches and a big dent on the rear right side of the bumper which the guy fixed up and sprayed for no extra cost.
