G'day,

My friend's having a problem with his VL commydore. He's got a RB20 turbo in it with a r32 gearbox (skyline stuff). Now recently when hes put it in reverse, sometimes (most of the time) it wont engage properly and when you rev it, it will only go back slowly, Its happens hot and cold. We thought wed get the auto serviced and we told him of the problem and he said that the reverse clutch pack had packed it in.

Also it seems to grab more the faster your going back, like you can rev it to 2-3000 to get it going back slowly but the faster you go back the less revs you need to maintain the speed.

Does this make sense to you? how could the clutch pack fail on reverse? he doesnt thrash it backward, buit he gives it hell forward. Also what you reckon itd cost to fix?

thanks
Meph

It does appear to be a fairly common problem with that gearbox.

Best bet is to ring around for a reco gearbox, or if the rest of the car is not worth it, consider scrapping it, or living with it, until total failure.

No parallels are to be drawn between this post, and the Grey Ghost.

why does his VL have an RB20 in it? did he buy the poverty pack, and got a downgraded engine lol ? if you're gonna get a reco box, why not look for a manual instead?

well on the way to changing the oil on it, it has lost reverse and third (or forth i dunno) completely, which means you do 80 down the highway at around 4000rpm.

Yeah it seems RS so hes thinking of putting a manual in it. Hes sick of things breaking on it so he wants to fix it and sell it. I reckon he'll fix it and like it so much he wont sell it.

The guy before him put the imported RB20 (DOHC, 24valve) in it with a single T3 turbo setup, definitely NOT a downgrade from the vl's.
