hi guys
i have a 4cycl TE and today i took it to the machnics to get just a normal serivce

while doin a ratior flush the machnic got some water on the battery but he said tat wouldnt have any effect

i drove it home and when i got back in to go out i couldnt start, the car not even the roof light will come on
just a faint light tat shows the dorrs open

i also have a sub and amp, and a pair of fog lights connected straight to the battery

now i wanna know y this would happen
it has never showed sighs of a weak battery and suddenly just dead after today

could it be because of the sub and amp as my headunit does have a 12sec deplay after switchin the car off but this shouldnt wear the battery out so quick right???

thanks alot guys for ur help
much appreciated

I hope you are running a heavy duty battery running that lot! (or should I say were!)

The 12 second delay light should be the least of your concerns really... as long as the alternator isn't failing!! oh I shouldn't say that.. I hate alternators. You might have left a light on or something and it has only just been holding on... check the water levels in the battery if it is not a sealed unit, but don't overfill them (refer to manual) and use distilled water, not tap water.... If you should happen to get it going, go for a decent drive and see if the battery will charge back up a bit... short of that it might be time for a new Heavy duty battery!

Edit: I would also suggest taking it back to the mechs in case something hasn't been re-connected. Oh and water on the battery should be ok as long as it is not excessive. Pouring boiling water over the battery terminals when cleaning can be good from time to time, just be careful of wires and circuitry.

Good luck!

My TH did exactly the same thing 2 nights ago. Ran perfectly, turned it off, went to start it two minutes later and could only run the interior light, nothing else. According to the RACV guy, batteries will just die sometimes, apparently a large problem in the 3RD Gens because of the battery box. Also, check that everything is turning off in the car, because in mine the light in the boot never went off for some reason, so that killed it pretty quick.

same here. had to replace mine on the w/e. i got back from a month trip and it was dead. now its still playing up. i bepped the horn while idling yesterday and the engine turned off

and my car still turns off while driving sometimes too. (think this still might have something to do with my CAI extended wiring, but not sure)

Your right...it could be a loose connection, but it sounds like it could be your alternator, if the car turned off when you pressed the horn...

Why is it that people get problems right after a service has been done?

Anyway it could be a number of things, the mechanic might have forgotten to put a lead back on, or might have bumped something, or the battery may have just dried up.

Assuming you didn't get any warning indicators on the way home from the mechanic, then it's pretty safe that it isn't your alternator.

A couple of months ago my battery died suddenly. I got home and drove the car into the driveway after an hours drive and all was good. Shut it off, then about 5 mins later I decided to park the car into the garage. Tried to start the car, it wouldn't bulge, lights were dimmed and my alarm doesn't even chirp. Got my trusty old multimeter, sure enough the battery was hovering at 8volts. I got the NRMA batteries to come out and they replaced it, and told me from the code on the battery that it was long due for a replacement.

And I had a dead battery a few weeks back (it was ex-4bie, and it fitted better for the roadworthy)

It actually totally carked it whilst at my parents place, and after finally jump starting the car, it died as I turned into my street, when I put the high beams on (power was out, so no street lamps)

Could it be the sudden weather changes?

When a battery dies suddenly like that it is usually the result of one of the internal cells shorting out which is why the terminal voltage drops. This is provided the rest of the elecs are good, so if there was no alt light or loose wires it's bye bye battery.

A lead acid battery is constructed of 6 cells (thats why there's 6 vent caps), each 2V nominal, the cells are connected in series to give an output of approx 12V nominal.
A cell can short for various reasons usually growth between plates.
When you loose a cell the surface voltage (votage with no load applied ie multimeter hooked to battery) will fall below 10V and die in the arse when a load is applied.

Hope this helps.

same thing happened to me wehn i got my car it only had a 220cca bat in it and i was thinking i bet thats gonna die soon sure enough one week later turned the engine off start it 10 min later DEAD it had 12 volt in it but as soon as you turned anything on like the light drop right down to 2v (dropped its cells)

Mine went dead as a doornail when teh regulator died. Jump started t he car and the little red battery light stayed on, and power windows got stuck down!
Anyway it was teh regulator on mine.
