Hi Guys,

has anybody had any problems with the bottom end in their 2.6l? i have a sneaking suspision that i have done a bottom end bearing but i havent as yet had a chance to rip the sump off and check it out. Has this happened to anybody else?

Dull knocking sound?

The Elite that my father towed away, had major bearing damage, but that was from no oil checking.

No that was not from no oil checking, it was from milage and wear.

As to the thread, what sort of mialage have you done? Most of the time with a bottom end noise it will be more noticable under load and higher revs initially.

In general these are strong engines, this will depend of course on the history especially before you got the car.

bottom end knock will be most noticable on cold start up. normally u would be burning a LOT of oil b4 u get to that stage of wear. I hope youre not mistaking timing chain rattle which is common on these cars and does sound similar.

it doesnt burn much oil but it does make a slight knocking sound
timing chain should be ok as it was replaced aprox 20k k's ago though one of the guides appears to be stuffed again

the car has done about 175 000kms, but has been driven hard for most of that

im not overly concerened as theres a rebuild commin pretty soon but the last thing i want is for a rod to let go

yes with the timing chain the problem is more with the tensioner than the chain itself. I would really be surprised if u wore out main bearings at under 200'000 km...unless u are a real slack ass with servicing.

i havent been slack with servicing but the car has had a pretty hard life so far (its an x rental) and im hardly easy on it
