Gday all
fairly new to mitsu scene.....to cars in general really.....
neways, just bought a 1999 Altera LS, with the standard single deck cd player.
Ive noticed there is a bit of a high pitched squeel in the speakers, only when used on acc. or while car is running. If the car is off, speakers are fine.
Anyone else had the same or similar problem, and is it a user fixable thing, or am i better off taking it to local car audio place and get em to look at it?
Cheers

Could be something to do with faulty grounding, is sound worse when the car is on as aposed to acc.
You say it doesnt happen when the car is off, which im assuming means that the stereo isn't running at all and now power is passing through the speakers.

Is this only when the engine is actually running? Or when you turn the keys to Acc without the engine running.
Most likley cause is engine whine. As was said before caused by faulty grounding usually. (sometime induced noise in rca leads/speaker wire. but this is uncommon. Engine whine will be in tune with the engine revs. When you accelerate does it the pitch increase?
You can get noise filters for this which attach to the headunit power lines. I bought some of caraudioaustralia for $1 plus postage and donations. Alternatively...
-Unplug and clean your ground terminal on your battery, remove any corrosion. I take it you have no other additions to you system like amp, crossovers, new cables. Or any other changes to your cars electrics.
Engine whine can also happen when the unit itself is switched off as there is still power running through the unit as it's connected directly to the battery.
Peace
Tim

thanks for the help
if the engine is off, and i just have the stereo running, there is no squeel. as soon as i start it up, the squeel is there, but it isnt like a normal engine whine, it is a constant pitch. No variance with revs or anything.
Do you think the noise filters will still fix this sort of problem, or does it sound more speaker related? As it may have become apparent, i havent a clue when it comes to this sort of thing...
cheers again

oh, and no additions to the electrics, although i do believe the sunroof is an aftermarket...wouldnt think that would have an effect on the sound, but as i said...NFI
no amps or extra speakers or anything.

my bets still on the grounding.

i sound like such a noob i know, but is that something i can do, or should i have it looked at?

You can pull the head unit out and check that the black wire isnt lose on the head unit, or you can upgrade it to a lower gauge wire, im not sure where the grounding wire goes on the stock loom, maybe back to the battery i'm not really sure, if so check to make sure its connected properly back at the battery.

no worries, my dad was once a sparky, so i might get him to check it out too.
thanks for all

Yeah u can do it. Get a size 10 spanner and undo the ground(negative terminal) from the battery. Cover the positive with a rag or something cos if you make contact (spanner touching both negative and positive terminals.) you could hurt yourself or more importantly your car ;) Blow off all the corrosion, clean up both surfaces with a rag etc (you want metal on metal) and see if that does anything. Tighten it up as hard as you can.
See if that works for starters.
Could be many other things though, altenator connections, headunit connections, the ground to body connections. The fact that its a constant whine sounds weird. Could be faulty headunit but its stock so they're usually pretty sturdy.

Mine does exactly the same. TH Advance Wagon - when just radio on, not on accessories, there is no problem. As soon as key is on acc (motor not started) it does it. High pitch, constant pitch/volume - doesnt go up/down like motor interference.
I have found that if you put the parkers/headlights on it disappears immediately!!! Every time this works!!!!
Am installing a new HU soon, so will hopefully figure out what it is lol

Sounds like an Earth drama. ( It's what you'd get if you lived on Mars :bowrofl: :bowrofl: )
One sounds like an alternator issue (engine on). The other one???????
Try earthing H/U in a different spot. Also, upgrade earth from Batt. to chassis,(under Battery) and batt. to gearbox bolt, from 8g to 4G. I did this and it's all good now. :D

i want to do this, as i have some 4g cable left over, but i'm not mechanically minded, and dont feel comfortable with sticking my hands in dark places. how much cable do u need? how many terminals etc? is it hard? do u ahve any how-to pics? :D

I don't have a digicam handy but it's really easy.
1. You know that black plastic ribbed (for her pleasure :bowrofl: ) conduit that various engine wiring is wrapped and then taped in? Go to Auto pro, it cost SFA per metre.
2. The gearbox bolt is 16mm (from memory). Get a good quality ring terminal to fit this. Solder your 4G into the terminal, in a vice with a blowtorch or similar.
3. Take off entire air intake ass'y, so you can see what you are doing.
4. You've got one wire from batt. terminal to G/B bolt, unwrap the tape around the conduit, replace with 4G soldered piece earth. Use a socket to undo bolt, it's pretty tight (That's what she said :bowrofl: ). I think the other wires in this bit go down to the starter motor, but whatever.
5. Put new ribbed conduit around this bit, and tape. ( Use good quality "Nitto" tape, don't use cheap crap)
6. Another wire from neg. terminal goes to chassis, just under batt. Use same procedure and you will be laughing!!
7. You may need to replace neg. batt. terminal to accomodate larger guage wires. I got an Aeropro terminal, seems to work OK.
8. Start engine, revel in your new earth, and kiss your whining goodbye. Then go inside, where the true whining may begin. Quote " you spend too much time on that car...."
P.S. In case it isn't obvious, Disconnect and remove battery before doing anything!!

hey MUlga....after exams i will do this earth upgradey thingy. Have you found a digicam yet?...i like, this is intense thread minage, but i don't feel like starting a brand new thread.
i took a small 2s look at my ground cables yesterday...and omfghbo8k, i have no idea where they lead to!! it seems they go into the split tube stuff, and is wrapped by electrical tape :doubt: ...i might hassle u some more in about 3 weeks time :bowrofl:
