why is the common answer to fix problems seem to be 'reset the ecu' these days?? i believe this dude's problems are better answered by hyperTF's comments.

hmmm I have a TJ and this just happened to me today!
start engine, it revs to 1500rpm then shutdowns
after 2 seconds. it did that three times in a row this morning.
then it started fine.
5 more engine starts throughout the day no problems.
then afterwork, bugger, it won't start anymore, starter motor
cranks up, but no engine rpm. tried maybe 8 times, gave up.
left car for an hour, then came back, on the 2nd go it decided
to start again. though engine didn't sound that normal for first 5mins.
Then after 5mins it sounded ok.
I'm hoping it will start tomorrow morning, I think I will call the
alarm guys? or mitisubish??
PS: I did reset the ECU 4 to 5 days ago. did this stuff something up@!#$?

Read the post more carefully... i didn't suggest that he try resetting the ecu to fix the problem, I asked if he had reset it recently as it may have been the cause of the problem.

In some cases after the battery has been disconnected or ecu has been reset mitsubishi need to adjust a sensor to get the car to idle/start correctly there after, i'm not exactly sure which sensor it is though.
The other possibility is that maybe your battery is on the way out and not holding it's charge properly, my old TJ did this then shortly after (about a week) the battery died completely.

i know this is a bit late, but it is definitely the battery, told the guys at mitsubishi last time i had it in for service, they knew what it was straight away, your battery was stuffed, changed it at service and not a problem since.. that's my 2 cents :D

yeah it was the battery i bought the car 8 months ago they said they would pu a new battery in when i buy it. they did, but they put a 270 crank amps battery in. i work a coventrys and took a look through my manuals and it should have had at least a heavy duty with about 440 crank amps. so eventuallly mine shat it self.
so problem solved. cheers all

kk84wa: good to hear your problem was battery :)
Mine is still stuffed!!
It has done the engine-startstop a few times intermitently since new battery.
It has never stalled whilst engine is running, only at initial crank/startup.
(Battery is Bosch Gold 520cca)
Maybe my alternator? throtle sensor? immobiliser?
The auto-electrician is taking a look on Friday, hopefully the car will
do the startstop thing, coz its happening only maybe 1 out of 7 starts.

Something similar happened to me a few months ago. I'd had a few problems starting the car for a week or so prior and then one day while at a shopping centre the car just refused to start (had to have it towed  ). Initially had an auto mechanic and then an auto electrican look at it (checked fuel pump etc), and they couldn't help - said it must be ECU related and would need to be hooked up to Mitsu diagnostic computer. Anyway turned out it was an immobiliser problem that could only be fixed by a Mitsu dealer (had to get it towed again  ). Basically, the immobiliser was kicking in and overriding the engine start, so the engine would either start for a second, rev briefly and then die, or in the end just not start at all.
Luckily they fixed it within the hour for about $150, and no problems since. The guys in the Mitsu workshop said they'd seen a few TH's and TJ's with the same problem.

if it starts, revs up, and then shuts off.. id say its the battery thats stuffed, 99 per cent of the time on magnas, TE onwards.. if it cranks, and wont fire.. id say its the keyring antenna, the plastic ring around the ignition barrel for the immobiliser is stuffed.. not uncommon.. a simple and temp fix to that is to take the lower panel off, drivers side of dash.. and get access to the key ring antenna plug, disconnect it, reconnect it.. and then it should fire up.. only a temp fix, it will play up again.. the part price is under 50 bucks, and about 30 mins to install! remeber, if u wanna get the part, make sure u get the right one.. illumination, or no illumination!

Well I know its not battery, as I put in the new 520cca battery.
It is still doing start/stop randomly, Auto-elec who is also my
alarm fitter couldn't find any probs. Plus car didn't playup at their shop.
Hate random problems!
Mitsubishi is taking a look tomorrow, see what they say.

Hi all. I'm brand new to the forum (and YES I have a problem unrelated to this thread)
I have however also had this particular problem. Car starts briefly then just dies. Solution - towed it to my mech. He fixed it and said that the earth lead to the ECU was stuffed/damaged so he replaced it. I don't think he is much of an expert on electronics (he is old school) but it fixed the problem. Maybe this info will help you.

Hey fencer assuming your car is still under warranty I think that should have been done under warranty.
If not under warranty then maybe they should have still done it cos it is a known problem certainly with TH ......although when I had mine done a few years ago they said they had not seen it in a TH at that time but the previous model all the time!
It is a loose wire behind where the ignition key goes.....mitsu have a fix for it which is just to resolder it I think....it was a while ago so not exactly sure of the remedy.
For the record the RAA guy got mine started by disconnecting the battery and reversing the leads (check that!!)....which resets the computer.
ps I know nothing.....nothing........ :D
