Alright, time to start this topic again...

Well, my TM magna is a leaded model and when I got the car, the previous owner ran it off ULP (it ran off it no problems)... anyhoo, I got a reconditioned motor and it's from a tr (at least the head is)... so natually I put ULP in it and it runs fine. But cos of my crap fuel economy, I tried PULP and used it for some time.

Then I got my carby redone... and with crappy petrol prices, i've been putting ULP in... but the motor seems to be knocking now... you could be crusing and you'll hear it - at first I though it was the timing chain rattling around. but I put PULP again and it's all good

So my question is why is it knocking now? Wouldn't the carby be put back to factory specs so it should run off ULP and the head is designed so it doesn't need LRP.

Is there anyway to fix this without costing money so i can run ULP? or should I just keep putting in PULP (I do love the power and smoothness of it too, but it's expensive)... or should I put in LRP (it's cheaper than PULP), cos everything else on the car is leaded... like no air injection, no cat convertor (according to the gregorys, ULP models came with a cat convertor)

Btw, I dont think anyone has fiddled with the timing... The carby guy didn't mention he fiddled with the timing, and my mechanic certianly wouldn't (cos I wanted to advance it a little bit, but he said it may void the warranty)

ps I hate filling up with the ULP pump... it doesn't click off cos I got a big leaded hole and everything spills everywhere if I'm not careful lol

Cheers,
Bill

AFAIK the only cure is to back off the timing , if it doesnt ping with PULP then its gotta be your advance. You might lose a bit of power but save your pistons/plugs/etc. or you could try an additive .

As said, i think the only was youll be able to use ULP is to retard the timing a bit, it is possible that the timing changed slightly be itself ( i checked mine a month or so ago and it was 17-18 BTDC  ) You probably shouldnt use LRP as the TR head is supposed to be run with ULP, even LRP has a sligthly higher octane number (i think  ). You could always try using 100RON racing fuel lol

yeh the LRP is supposed to be 95RON as opposed to the 91RON of ULP. Doesnt really matter tho because LRP is being removed from the market soon anyway.
