The starter motor doesnt even turn. All i get is one click and thats it. Sometimes i hear a clicking sound when i try start it but im sure its not the starter because its a very faint sound
I tried a jump start and the same thing happens. Anyone know what the problem could be ?
All the lights in the car work fine.
I wish i had one of those flowchart things.

I don't know how wise or unwise this really is but I have got a car going by getting someone to turn the key while I tap the starter motor with the head of a hammer or something like that, but that doesn't fix the problem period, it just can get you out of trouble if you are lucky!
Good luck with it!
Edit: Auto or manual?

Its manual.
I would try tapping the starter but the problem is,... ummm.. im not sure where abouts it is
If it works buy hitting the starter, atleast i know what the problem is and then i can drive it down to the shops.
Its due for a tune up anyways.

sounds like the ground wire has come off the coil.
have a look at the coil to c if everything is connected properly. check that all ignition leads are connected properly and the coil lead is connected to the dizzy cap right AND to the coil itself. there should also b a black wire connecting to the coil, held on by a nut (its a size 8 nut). u should c it...

Wires and leads seem to be ok
My sisters TR 4cyl does this sometimes. Starter motor jams up. Best way I've found to fix is put it in 5th, handbrake off and rock it back and forward. This is usually enough to free it.

Nothing seems to be working :(
Can someone tell me where abouts the starter motor is on these cars ?

The location on the starter motor is really stupid.
How on earth are you meant to replace the bastard

I wish I could help but I cant, but if you don't know what you are doing, maybe bite the bullet and get a workshop to do it, or a handy mate! though I have no idea of the positioning of the starter motor I would hazard a guess that it might have to me done from underneath the vehicle... good luck! (again)

The starter motor is on the left side (when sitting in the car) of the gearbox. Its not that hard to get out...with the right tools :) with a carby model that is, on an efi car you might have to take the air intake hose off so you have enough room to reach in there
(i can post a pic if youre really struggling)

All the lights in the car work fine.
just check that the battury isnt dropping to much voltage as even tho the lights might work the battury might not be able to provide enough charge.....try putting ur headlights on get someone to stand at the front and see how much the lights dim

Thanks for helping me out guys I apreciate it :)
I managed to start the car by hitting the starter and then drove it down to the shops. They quoted me that it will be around $270 and to come back in the afternoon to pick it up.
When i whent to pay for it i asked him how much it cost and he gave me a  face and said that the starter motor cost them $310 because its brand new. Not reconditioned but brand new.
He said since he quoted me $270 he will only charge me the quoted price and the guy made nothing from it.
I feel pretty bad that he didnt get any money (actually lost money  ) but atleast my car is working again.
I can't believe how expensive this thing is
i bought an old engine off ebay with almost everything for $40, got me an auto gearbox i dont want, a block im trying to get down the tip, but now i have a repalacement head and a starter motor. If they break then ive got some real cheap replacements.
My laser had the same problem as you having to whack the starter motor, i think it was only because i hit a real big puddle and i think the hot-cold shock stuff it. Whacked it and drove home, havent had any more problems :D

before you take it apart, instead of jumping the car, put the other cars battery in yours.. sometimes cells dont charge even enough to crank a car, and a astron is fairly heavy engine to crank so it takes some CCA to turn.
or if ur too lazy to chagne the battery, leave the other car running and hook up the jumper leads and let it idle for 30 minutes or so, then it may charge the battery
also get another set of jumper leads and attach them to the engine then to the chassis somewhere, because i dont know if u know what earth leads are and how to check them
then it'll crank i reckon its just ur battery stuffed.
Fairly heavy current??
We melted a set of 400A leads, trying to start mine, when the battery died.
Admittedly, the battery had a massive short circuit...
