I have a problem with my steering wheel. It makes a clicking sound when I steer left or right whenever I'm stationary. The clicking happens when my car is straight and when I steer a tiny bit towards the left or right and it makes a single click. I had the car checked out before I bought it and they said it is no problem. I might take it to Mitsubishi one time to check it out or maybe get an NRMA check on it. I'm wondering if any of you guys have the same problem as me...

My car by the way is a Mitsubishi Verada 1997 Ei...

Thanks! :)

hummm one thing , why the hell are you steering while your at a full stop ? that puts flat spots on your tyres and doesnt really help your power steering.

Anyway NRMA checks dont check everything its a quick visual inspection so dont rely on them. i would be looking to see if there is lubrication on the steering colum or other things like

I don't fully steer while I'm at a stop. The wheel doesn't turn at all, I just move the wheel like 2cm either side and it clicks, then when the steering wheel comes back around, it clicks again. At first, I thought it was like a guide for steering, where once I pass the click, the wheels are no longer straight. But I don't know, I still worry about it. :(

Could be something to do with ur power steering pump/steering rack. i know I had a similar problem with my old car... steering rack fell to pieces, but that was more of a clunk than a click (Goddam POS fords)

With the magna only problems I have is the power steering pump (Blew up last night going through the refton spur... getting fixed tomorrow) however even now that is stuffed I still havent got any sort of clicking, just bloody difficult steering.

If it sounds behind the steering wheel it's more than likely the blinker cancelation mechaism, I've heard of people putting a small dab of graphite grease [graphite grease won't run when it's warm so it shouldn't make a mess] on a very small screwdriver and wiping it on the mechanism up between the steering wheel and column bezel. I've also heard of the mechaism making a little scraping noise when turning, on occasion. I guess you could try squirting a small amount of selleys easy-glide or similar up there.

I would also agree and say that would be your best bet. Tell us how you go anyway....

Did you find what it was?

Recently I've noticed an occasioanl clicking sound too when doing turns around roundabouts. Sometimes it'll do it, otherwise it won't. Normally only 1 or 2 clicks, then sometimes 1 or 2 clicks when straighting up again. Sounds like it's coming from the stearing column alright - or somewhere from under the dash.

My TJ has only done ~37,000K though. :( Still under warrenty (1-2months left) so I think I'll be taking it back to them.

Just to clarrify, the clicky sound - of 1 or 2 clicks - only happens on round-abouts, or when turning the wheel left slightly swing the car around the roundabout when turning RIGHT.

Now if it was the dreaded CV joints - the sound would be coming from the wheels right?

Well boys, the car went in to Mitsubishi Service this morning and they found a problem alright, although it's was nothing mention'd here!

On the stearing column, there's this part which connects electrical up for the airbag and so forth so the wires don't get tangled up with the turning. The casing(?) to this was apparently rubbing, hence why a noise was sometimes made. So my car will be fixed next week once they get the part in. :) Yah to what's left of my new car warrenty!

The service bloke said it's really common and happens all the time. (I got the impression that it wasn't just on the magna's either, including lancers, etc, possiblily even the commo's they service too)

BAD NEWS: I was still getting the noise!!!!

GOOD NEWS!... lol.... I was getting worried for nothing :D

Maybe Mitsubishi didn't have to replace the clock-spring for the air-bag electrics after all????

Remember how i said I only got the noise sometimes when turning. And I only really noticed it on roundabouts??? Well aftering susing it out on a test drive* they were able to tell me what it was. When turning WITHOUT the indiactor on, there'd be no noise. Turning with the indicator on, you'd get the noise again!

Well the clicking sound I was hearing was the indicator stick disengaing from the ON position automatically as I'd put the stearing in to a full lock, ie from turning left then right, the indicator arms goes though a mechism. Normally it's greased up so it's quiet, but it wears off after a while, hence the occasional clicking noise that could be heard.

The mitsui service/tech assured me this wasn't going to be a problem. He said he could grease it up again so it's completely silient, but it'd probably start dripping in the hot summar heat then.

So nothing was wrong after all :)

* the first time i took it to them I said I'd take them for a drive, but no don't worry we'll sort it out
