Gday all
i have the opportunity to purchase a vrx/sports (not sure which) muffler for my TH for about $100 (not installed)
Firstly, is that a reasonable price?
Secondly, what sort of gains will i get by fitting it over the factory muffler? Power, economy?
Thirdly, how easy are they to fit myself? Or am i best having it done pro?
Cheers

$100 sounds good to me as long as it's in good condition.
It'll give you a bit more power or economy, but it probably won't be a huge difference. It'll also give you a nicer exhaust note.
I would recommend it be done by a pro ... unless you've got welding experience.

$100 is okay price considering Mitsu sell it for $300 =/- installed.
As far note is concerned you will hear it in the car and hardly out side.
Gain: 6-10 KW (depending on alot of factors)
Gettign is installed by pro is a good idea .

The factory units are a bolt on swap, you could do it yourself. It could return around a 10HP difference at the wheels at peak power and gains start around the 3500rpm mark.

Well, considering it's the only difference between the VR-X / Sports and S2 Exec cars then it's difference enough.

In case you're interested - exact prices as of about two months ago
MIMR924731 - Muffler Assembly Main - $347.20 + GST
MIMB687014 - Gasket Exhaust Flange - $17.54 + GST
plus whatever for labour - I think its was about $50 (I had some other stuff done as well at the same time). This isn't strictly speaking, the exact VRX muffler - that has a straight out pipe. This one has a single bend down pipe at the rear - I presume its the the same then as the Sports.

Actually this is incorrect. Most of the power gain that the VR-X/Sports has over the S2 Exec is in the remapped ECU. A a small amount (about 3kw) is gained from the free flowing exhaust system.

Ummm... not quite. There was a cam and ECU updates from the TH, (147kW), to the TJ series 2 (155kW) at which point the only difference is the muffler. The VR-X had those updates from it's release as it's always had 163kW and there's two series of VR-X's. That muffler is worth way more than 3kW.

13kW is way too much for just a simple muffler change. 8kW sounds abt right and that's at max. power only. you don't get that 8kW added low in the rev range, in fact, you might lose abit of power down low due to the reduced back-pressure. that's why ppl experience sluggishness when moving off, after installing the sports muffler.

To my knowledge the reduction in back pressure at the rear muffler end of things produces no ill effect. The only time back pressure can affect the performance is if you overly enlarge the exhaust at the "tuned section" typically towards the extractor end of things. After that "tuned section" it doesn't really matter how big the pipe is. Usually afterwards, the bigger the better. I mean the rear muffler opens out into thin air, if it did make a difference then wouldn't opening into everything drastically reduce performance?
Correct me if you've heard differently.

alrighty, so a change in plans...
those redback systems that are on ebay? i can get it fitted up here for around $50.
is $330 a good price for the redback? and performance/economy aside, do they sound alot better?
and again, i dont wanna be too loud...something about those little noisey lancers/skylines/etc that s*** me

So basically, my 147kw TH will become 155kw by just installing a bolt on sports muffler from the TJ???????????????????????? Thats pretty mad... Should increase power and use less fuel? Does it increase mid range accelration?

yeah it might become 155kw or just less but you still wont have the torque the TJs have and smoothness they have with the better camshafts and upgraded ecu PS i own a TH and TJ. I notice the TH with the sports exhaust isnt as quick of the line as my stock TJ but i reckon its all up top rev range were the muffler gives better performance i still think my TJs a quicker car

More power but not less fuel.
