i have had a TJ series II sports AWD auto for a couple of months......
when I bought it the tripee was saying 13.8 litres/ 100 km
it stayed on this until i read one of the posts here and decided to reset the tripee.....plus I only use BP ultimate.....it went down and settled at around 12.8 litres/ 100 km and then climbed back up to low 13's but eventually settled back at 13.8 when i was doing a hell of a lot of short city driving looking for a house
its now back about 13.4. I'm gonna reset the tripee again since I'm no longer looking for a house.....
it looks like for normal city driving its somewhere between 12.8 and 13.8....does this sound normal? I would say I am quite a 'hard' driver cos I enjoy the damn car so much :D
I use to push my old TH 3L auto (the Black Machine lol ) quite hard and she was a pleasure to drive with no real dramas and very very fuel efficient (got from Adelaide to Balranold (check spelling) i.e. about 720 kms on one tank).

My TE 3.0 does about 12L/100km in city driving. So with yours being 3.5 and AWD, it doesn't sound bad at all, since you admit to driving it quite hard. Unless you're towing something, it shouldn't get any worse than 14L/100km.

For heavy city work that sounds about right. My highway cycle gets down to 10.4L/100 with a little city work. Maybe I'm not driving it right :bowrofl:

My 01 auto vrx 60/40 city/hwy
does between 12.3 to 13.3, avg 12.7
your AWD which is 120kg heavier??
should hover more above 13L

wow.. my vrx 02 makes the pajero look like an electric hybrid car... sucks about 19L/100 according to the trip comp.. thats with fairly hard city driving.. long range freeway, around the 10L mark per 100klms

One trip I did from Bathurst to the Big Shell on the edge of Melbourne on ONE TANK OF OPTIMAX! Talk about cheering.... :D
I've got a TF 3.0L Manual - and I wasn't exactly nursing it either.....
There was 50K on the clock then, now It's 100K and I don't quite get the same figures anymore, but not far off. Also the K&N Panel makes for slightly worse figures (more air = more fuel required for correct tune).

What, my trip computer reads 11.5 city driving and 10.5 after some 5th gear cruzin
Genrally speaking it rarely reads above 11.5. It was 10.9 this morning and traffic was packed
My ride is a 2002 VRX (i drive using triptronic)

well since I last reset the trip i have done 100 km (more highway than heavy city) and I am getting 12.1 L/100 km
i wonder how adaptive the car (computer) is to driver style?
anyways consumption is so subject i.e. w or w/o aircon (guzzles with aircon running).......really heavy city driving (looking for houses chews up the juice) or not........a service....etc etc
I will see this time if i can get 450 km on a tank ? without riding empty for 20 odd k's
Does anyone know the exact capcity of the fuel tank on the TJ Series 2 AWD Sports and how much spare capacity there is when the gage is on empty?
I think the most i filled up with was 58 litres so if the capacity is 70 litres I could theoretically get another 100 km with the gauge on empty (based on 12.1 L/100km).....does this sound plausible :noway:
talk about sweaty palms driving on the sniff of an oily rag...

I have a TJ magna but its a 3.0ltr and it was averaging about 9.8 when i bought it second hand i have a K&N filter fitted on the car and also there was something about fuel savers
i have one installed (fitch Fuel system) and now i average about 9.0 - 9.2 per 100km.
I do about 800km per week and half of that is freeway driving but I do this traveling durning off peak period. but if i do local driving it hits the 10.2 - 10.4 km/100.

My AWD does about 25/75 city/hwy. With my custom CAI and POD box, I have dropped to 10.1L/100km and am pretty happy about that. The AWD while heavier, has the 5sp Auto to help spread the economy.
My TF 3L manual averages 8.5L or better.

Hi all - first post
I did a trip to South Arm this Chrisie (way down past hobart) and my TJ did 9.0l/100km all the way down and back (Gravelly Beach, near Launnie), did drop to 8.9 for a while, but sat on 9.0 most of the time, AND i was turning the air con on and off a fair bit - cant even tell the difference when air con is on or not!

After all the problems I've been having with my '01 Sports ie. 14.5l/100k's at worst  and 13.0l/100k's at best, I am happy to report that I'm now getting 9.6l/100k's on trips and low 12's in town. After the completion of the trip comp's last 20hr cycle, fuel consumption read 11.4l/100k's(70/30 town/country) and it currently reads 10.4 with frequent air con use, so I'm quite happy at the moment :D . Don't ask me what I changed to achieve this, I did nothing!! I suspect the O2 sensor has magically started working properly, and the car is not running rich anymore  :)

which one did you get, inline or drop in? the prices for inline is so expensive! I'm currently installing a fuelstar unit myself, it's inline.

Trinedy, That's the best I've seen in a Magna by a way long shot! Well Done! Hey, did you do anything to the car? Please tell of your machines configuration:
1. stock engine?/exhaust/any mods
2. what engine oils brand/grade
3. tyres brand/rim size
4. new spark plugs?/leads
5. fuel type
6. how old/kms
7. change gear oils?
You're certainly doing something right for such an excellent outcome for fuel consumption!
Kind Regards,
PC

Hey guys i havent been looking in on this thread for a while sorry
CanberraVR-X to answer you Q Yep the manual VR-X's come with Cruise and it works a bloody treat :)
Deathkage to answer your q's
1: Stock engine with Ralliart Cams, K and N filter
2:Oil im not sure what brand as my mechanic does it all for me i know it's 10W tho can find out by next week for ya if you want as it's going in for a service
3: Tyres 17x7.5 with Falken ze326 rubber
4: stock leads and plugs
5: Fuel 95 ron premium PFFT (that the highest octane we can get here in tassie without going to performance automobiles and paying some stupid amount)
6: Last of the Series 2 in 02 with 45,000 on the clock
7: Gear oils all the same
The car was sitting on cruise control all the way up doing about 110 - 115km's (110 is the limit) with a quick burst every 30 - 50 km's for overtaking cars
ATM im sitting on just over 11/100 as im doing all city driving
Talk to you all soon guys and gals :)

Thanks for the quick reply Trinedy, which you sent about 45 mins after I posted.
I just aquired my AWD just before christmas & I'm getting serious about the 13.8/100km on city and 12.9 Hwy, which is surprising because I'm really gentle.
the AWD's done 48000kms and apart from the higher then expected fuel consumption and that I thought the suspension, especially handling & dampening is not as well set up as my wifes MX-5 (which is solid yet I think gives a more comfortable ride, ok being 1/2 the weight plus better cushions & stiffer body may have something to do with it) the Magna is a nice car to drive.
Just now going through the process of elimination, started with replacing the air filter, now looking @ spark plugs, then O2 sensor on Monday. Next's the engine oil - which I think a heavier grade is being use - something like 20W50.
Well done. I think your VRX is very well looked after and maintained, to return such stirling performance!

Damn ... you guys seem to use a hell of a lot of fuel.
I have driven my Mum's TJ Series II VRX manual ... and I was getting awesome economy ... and I was driving gently ... all highway work ... and I was returning 8.5-9 L/100km regularly ... and this was with average speeds of around 110km/h.

Thanks for the kind words mate, i wouldnt go with oil that thick in such a new engine just yet i would stick at about 10W but it's your call tho of course OH and great purchase as well mate i soo want a AWD VR-X In the TJ shape hehehehehe i spose it can be made all i need to do is buy a AWD and then swap all the bits and pieces over MWHAHAHAHAH

PS:i also forgot to mention i have lowered it with Pedders sports ryders all round

on the freeway doing 100kms/hr--i hope you where in the left lane with your hat on the rear parcel shelft--my vrx on a country run will get around 9 to 9.2 on an average, in the city probably 11 to 11.5 --depends if any idiots wants to give you a run, some i let go, others get to check out the paint work on my rear end

Update on fuel efficiency quest:
the new air filter and set of plugs are returning 10.4L/100kms HWY and around 11.6L/100 city.
Now looking for a lighter grade of oil for engine. Target = Mobil 1 Grade 0W40. Anyone knows where I can get some around Perth? If not i'm going to stick in 5W50. hope lose another couple of litres then.

match this then - I average 9.1/9.5 ALL the time, city or highway - and its an auto, and im a bit of a leadfoot at times - dropped to 8.9 on a trip last night - but it has just had new oil in it - give it a few weeks it'll be back between 9.1 - 9.5

I'm doing way above that. I believe I've got crappy oil in engine which I'm going to change soon.
Your fuel consumption goes up after a few weeks because mineral oil oxidises and thickens so increasing internal resistance.
if you switch to syn oil like mobile 1 0W40 or 5W50 which oxidises 5 times as slowly as mineral grade oil, you weeks of peak fuel efficiency goes longer. it's a ballance between paying more for oil or fuel. Since I can now change my oil @ 50000 km intervals with full syn - as I do with my mx-5, the economic evaluation indicates best option going for syn oil.
one word of caution tho, if you have an "old" engine (above 150k?) and have been using mineral oil for all its life, run one service interval with semi-syn before going full syn to allow a chance to decarbonise the engine. no worries switching the other way.
oh- I'm a mechanical engineer but not working for any oil co.
