g'day, 2 day i went out (shopping for my chrissie pressie hehe) i ended up getting 2 12" kicker EX-124 subs and an KX-200.2 amp. now, all i need to do is do a box... so what size do ppl reccomend?? i want both the subs in the one box... the biggest size i can have is 900mm by 400mm by 400mm

i think you will find that the sub will come with a recommendation for the box size. for example, my alpine 12" subs were recommended to be put in a 35L sealed box so i made a 70L box. However, when doing this, u will most likely find u will get a much better sound result by seperating the subs into 2 chambers. this can simply be done by placing another piece of wood in the middle thus creating 2 sealed chambers.

Congrats on the purchase as well btw.

the cheap $84 ones from JB? I think you posted a thread on CAA about this? I would of gone the single 12" CVR that came with the ported box all ready to go ($370), but hey, $84 each is a good price :)

Do you want ported? = loud spl , less power to run,
or
Sealed = Sound quality , more power required to run , safer for ur subs

I have that Kicker sub in a box sealed and it sounds awesome, for the price they are unreal.

Cool thats what Id recommend too. Rear load it as well. (point it backwards not forwards) You'll get the most out of your subs as the waves will bounce off the back of your boot lid.

i herd a while ago about someone running subs out of phase, what is that? is that firing one sub out of the box and one sub into the box?

Autobarn have a nice 2 x 12" seperatley sealed Sub box which fits nicely into the back of the magna.

kind of. subs will be out of phase when one sub is 'excurting' into the box the other is 'excurting' out of the box. (or vice versa) If you point a sub into a box and have one pointing out of the box, the subs will be "out of phase" if the wires are connected normally.

But if you swap the wires around on the one that is pointing into the box this will correct this.

You can reverse a speaker or subs polarity safely, it makes no difference to sound quality or power handling. to do this just move negative wire to positive terminal and vice versa.

You will notice cancellation with subs that are out of phase. That is the waves will cancel each other out creating poor sq.

ok, so really all i want to do is run the subs in parrallel (the guy at jb hi fi suggested that) and to run the amp in mono? will i need a crossover or something?

If you run both Subs in parallel and they are 4ohm units you will need an amp that is 2ohm stable. Alot of amps "claim" to be 2ohm stable but usually they don't last long. From personal experience i have noticed that amps running 2ohm loads cannot control the subs very well yet at 4ohm it is optimal. Your amp should already have a low pass crossover in it as well as a bridging function.

I would do the following:

Buy a decent 4ch amp and bridge both channels and run a Sub off each. Or, buy 2 Monoblock Amps. Or buy a very high quality 2Ohm stable Monoblock and run both Subs in parallel (this is if you have 4ohm Subs).

Also sealed enclosures with Subs need more power to run efficiently so bear this in mind.

uv already bought an amp by the looks, and probably not the best one for your gear but eh well.
Your amp isn't stable at 2 ohm bridged. It is stable at 2 ohm for each channel but not mono. You can try running it bridged, will probably work, but worst case it will go into protection.

Otherwise wire each sub into it's own channel. You'll have very good sq running them at 4 ohms but less power.

Crossovers are inbuilt if you dont have sub out on your head unit.

Turn on subsonic filter if it has it too... Im not sure of the model

For the subs you've got, they arent ridiculously powerful, so a single monoblock stable to 2 ohms would be suffice.

hmm well considering the amp i got with them is brand spankinf new, never been opend i dont think im going to go out just yet and buy a new amp, i got the kicker KX-200.2 and the guy recond the amp bridged will run at 2ohm and still b good...

yeh it will run, but they're not designed to run in that configuration. So it could go into protection

If you have any probs you could take it back cos he misinformed you. But Im sure it will be fine.

Mmmm - Doesn't seem to grunty to me but 200WRMS should do you for a while. I would be worried running an amp of that calibre at 2Ohm though. For 2 Subs i would certainly go bigger and better..

KX200.1
stereo or bridged mono output
Tri-Way capable
50 watts RMS x 2 at 4 ohms
100 watts x 2 at 2 ohms
200 watts x 1 in bridged mode
speaker- and preamp-level inputs
preamp outputs (pass full-range signal to another amp)
high-pass/low-pass crossover (variable 50-200 Hz, 12 dB per octave)
bass boost (0-18 dB at 40 Hz)
frequency response 20-20,000 Hz
unregulated Class A/B power supply offers a significant increase in power at 2 ohms

I would go for the Audiobarn A8000T from JB.

umm yeh, i would have gon ethat amp if i had alot of money to spend, dnt forget this was brought for me and it is my chrissie pressie from my mum...... i wanted decent stuff for the best prices and it was a little bit more than what she wanted to spend......

It'll pump very hard, dont worry about that. At least for now you've got a decent setup compared to stock. You will definetly notice the difference.

Say a year down the track if you save up some money the kicker amp will be heaps to run a very good front stage very hard. and then you can maybe buy a 2nd hand monoblock for $300ish to run the subs.

Either way you might be very happy with what you have now and in the end thats all that matters.

Pretty cool Christmas present.
