This isnt really something to be proud of. But i thought id share it...

Now the cars been with us since basically brand new back in '96.. And i dont think anyones ever replaced the air filter. Ive seen the state of this thing before but never bothered to do anything besides try and clean it a bit with the vacuum.

I just put in a K&N panel filter.. i guess anything would be better than this thing. Its really bad :sick:

Anyway, no more flat spots..

looks about 60000klms old.. no big deal.. ive seen 10 times worse. i doubt that air filter would of caused a flat spot!

yea the car was definatly stuggling at lower revs. and it doesnt when i take the filter of and use nothing, and doesnt now...

well anyway, im sure the cars running at least a tiny bit better now :)

I think OEM is between $35-$55 , i.e. no name and Ryco.

K & N Panel = $ 100 (Aproxx)

but from another thread in the TE-TJ forum, it seems that K&N will cause a flat spot around 1500-2500rpm? so whats the gain of the K&N then? gain in the higher rev range?

I have got a K&N panel filter in my 3.0 TE 5Spd, and a redback muffler, and the car runs great. Before i had the muffler, it would die in the ass at about 5g rpm, after that, it pulled to redline. After i put the panel filter in, it now pulls harder in all gears from most speeds, but really noticeable in 2nd when the revs hit about 4500, it just hammers to redline, and will keep going to the limiter! I love it, no problems for me! :D

Similar results for me too (Manual TF), all the gains from the filter where 3500rpm+ but I didn't really lose anything down low, feels the same as before the filter. The 2.5" catback exhuast also gave the biggest noticable differance, not only does it feel like there is a little bit more power, but the rev climb quicker (builds power quicker), love the 6G72s rev happy nature :badgrin:

PS. I had the same mods on my old auto TF and there was a slight reluctance to pull under 2K rpm before the unichip, but thankfully I didn't expiriance this with the manual.

Apart from my car also having a PVC pipe running to the airbox, your setup is identical to mine! Its revs very nicely hey! :cool:

I love the way it revs, at about 50-60 kays, in 2nd, i can just plant it and im doin 90 in no time. I can remember watching the speedo needle climb in 3rd and 4th one day, doing a bit of a run. I couldnt believe how fast it moved.
