Hi folks,

Im wanting to do a boot display with my current setup but i need som ideas. I'll have a false floor at the front so i can still have easy access to the spare, but the rest ill need help on. i want to stick to using mdf, but i do have piece of clear perspex around 30x30cm in size to use. it will most probably be all covered in black vinyl, the same as the sub box and i would like to still be able to see the amp (probably use perspex here)

If any1 has any suggestion or tips how to go about this please let me know as i need all the help i can get, or if uve go pictures of other similar magna boot installs(esp. tr/ts), id like to see them as well.

Thanks, Big Paul

you should be placing that fuse from your battery in your engine bay.. Less chance of a fire if something goes wrong..

I hope that isnt the only fuse you've got on that wire above your amp. Is your amp's positive wire fused near the battery???

Hope so, otherwise if that shorts out somewhere b/w your boot and your battery, eg through firewall etc, you could start a fire.

If you mount amps etc behind perspex you'll want a way to cool them.
12 volt PC fans come in handy and are easy to install. You can install tow for a push/pull effect. U can get ones with neons in them, or u can use ur own neons.
Buy high powered leds for lighting, i recommend.

Or an ICE LED setup maybe.

If you want to have embossed logos, use a mouse pad, cut out the shape you want then use vinyl etc to cover the lot.

Heaps of options... All upto how much effort you want to put in. And how much damage you wanna do to ur boot.
MOunt ur false floor up a bit so u can run wires underneath.
Use a piano (i think they're called this) hinge.
Maybe an electric lift or pneumatic arm to hold it up.

I'm surprised you didn't do one of your famous artistic mock-ups, s_tim_ulate! ;)

I'm actually looking at doing something similar with my boot, as soon as I get time :(

Sorry, I haven't got much constructive to say except go for it and post lots of pics.

With mine I plan to re-upholster as much of the boot as possible to the extent of building 'false walls' and stuff all the way around, covering the whole lot in vinyl or whatever.

yer, ok  . umm, will install another fuse next to battery 2morrow  now, back on track.
For what ive considered, a 12v blue ricey fan will be used to cool the fan yes, and the suggestion of using led's is a good 1, might look into it

u could go to the wreckers and find those gas lifter things like the ones for bonnets or something, but they would be rather hard to operate i'd imagine. u could also make a air compressor thingo, but i think they're very expensive. Just be cheap and use ur hand.

i guess u could put your amp, sort of sunken into the false floor, with the perspex over it. Just remember cooling is important. its also cool if u have, like a neon and fans etc.

another thing u could do with the perspex is cut it out to say magna, or a mitsubishi symbol, and stick it on mdf and put a neon behind it, so u get a 'glowing' MAGNA, or mitsubishi logo. Its important that u make the perspex sort of frosty looking if u do so tho...

soz cthulhu I charge by the hour now... :)

Big Paul - Soz I had this awesome site which had the cheapest brightest LED's like 50 cents or something. They cost heaps over here. I love the look of LED's in perspex, very easy effect to achieve. Drill into the ends of the perspex and place a few in there.

Then you can use a router to engrave whatever you want in.

If you dont have all the equipment, or a steady hand, you can get it doen professionally.
Don't forget glass is cheap and strong and can be good for installs, although harder to engrave etc.

Peace

order big bags off ebay for cheap from hong kong n stuff for bright LED's

dont go ricey blue fans, i can think of anything worse

u can etch ur perspex with a dremel (or similar tool) and drill edge of perspec and hotglue a few LED's in place to light it up

cnat wait til i got money for my setup, guna do my own custom install with lotsa mirrow plexi :)

well, i started 2day, its gonna have the clear perspex around the amp, /////ALPINE cut out of the front panel and perspex inserted with a neon behind, side panel, and false floor.

So far made is:
Front panel (has alpine cut out, still need to cut out circles for subs)
Left side panel is cut, with whole made for perspex
Perspex is ready to be placed in
Right side panel is cut

Next step:
Covering which is what i need opinions on, black vinyl or carpet? im liking the vinyl better as i believe it will give it a more stylish look and feel.

s_tim_ulate
08-12-2004, 04:33 PM
Vinyl needs more attention to detail on the mounting surface, you'll have to sand a lot etc, make sure you remove any imperfections as these will show up. Carpet on the other hand is easy and looks stock.

Much of a muchness.

I'd go the vinyl if ur willing to put in the effort.

Get some pics up of ur progress

Why don't you put some diffuser in behind the alpine logo. Like frosted perspex, you can just sand a sheet of perspex lightly if you cant find anything. I hate the look of neons when you can see them directly. Would look much better and would give the logo a better consistency.

Just lightly sand the perspex so it gives a sort of 'milky' feel to it, so when u put a neon behind it, u won't see the bright glare of the neon, but hopefully a nice even glow from the alpine logo.

btw, nice install, i'm in the middle of doing/planning mine....getting started is an issue for me :P

A diffuser is just plastic stuff that goes over fluro lights. Look in your kitchen. Its a textured plastic usually... Has the same effect...

2. never know what a burgler may look for under ur bonnet, keeps it kinda hidden.

3. Thanks

4. Fire extinguishers seem 2 b free these days when u visit ur dads place, he just gives them out. Plus, couldnt find a blue 1 and the chrome 1 was way 2 expensive cause it was a race use 1.

Hey dude, looking good however if it was me i wouldn't have the fire thingo ( cbf spellig it ) in to boot unless you have a nother in the cabin. The reason for this is what happens if the fire starts in the boot, you open the boot lid to get the thingo and flames will jump out at you gasping for new o2. My sugestion would be under the passanger seat at the front.

ok ppl, i need ur help. im onto the floor now but, what 2 cover it in is my major delema. I have the wood sitting in as the floor, but, i dont know what 2 use.

My thoughts:
1. Vinyl - Will rip and wear
2. Fabric/Material - Cheap, may rip if pulled tight
3. Rubber matting (like the stuff used around pools) - Sh!t that stuffs expensive, and much like vinyl, will wear and mark easily.

4. Spray wood black and put a clear coat on top - my favourite so far

So, any thoughts? im stumped

Perspex and carpet?
Some expensive wool carpet with a really thick low pile?
Blue Fluff (ghey ;))

I'd like the look of black or dark grey carpet. Not dodgy mitsu style carpet, some real upmarket stuff.
Get it cut to size then get the edges trimmed with leather...

Dont get vinyl etc on the floor, will turn to sh!t in a few weeks.

One of Shiny's old school installs.
I think eventually Im gonna do this to the magna too (Towel Rack that is.. Not Momo/Audison) when I get my bass sorted out.. But by then everyone will have it... Especially seeing I just put it up here.. Eh well :)

Kicker grilles are around $60. They are awesome!
A decent rail will cost you around $80, but still got many options.

Think about the advantages of having a towel rack in you boot! You could hang your chamios there, and keep it handy for wiping your ccar, you could hang a wet towel and use the sub to air it out, or it can be used to hang various items you don't need in the car.

Use a good glue (like the stuff they stick bodykits/skirts on with) to fix the brackets to the bodywork.

Then silicon around the panel as well to seal it up nice and tight!

If you've got a form fitting, stable false floor, bolting brackets onto it would be the go. Take out the standard carpet boot floor and use it as a template. That way you'll end up with a false floor that fits exactly and won't move anywhere - a perfect base for securing uprights to.

Ice_Magik

StarionBoy
20-01-2005, 08:32 PM
just to let u know, wedging panels in doesnt work when u start having heaps of bass and driving around lol.. learnt from experience..
dont have a pic at the moment, but i had panels wedged in then they moved due to bass/driving and i had the boot open, didnt notice they had moved, closed the boot and snapped one of the boards :bowrofl:

so u really do need a better way of holding them in, unless ur not as unlucky as me

and going for rice or plain,
i went for plain in my gf's car, same coloured carpet, theres a board which goes from the back of each wheel arch across the boot, and it just looks like the boots smaller and looks stock, but now i think im gonna take it all out and go for the rice look lol

I'm the same with my stereo, anywhere I'm gonna park I turn it off, just not worth advertising it.

Glue down blocks of wood to screw onto. Then you can make it nice n level too. And hide ur wires. Hinge should be easy to hide... Use a big piano hinge I think they're called.

I should just keep my mouth shut... ;)

I got 5 months to finish up my boot/audio. Hopefully will be all done by then.

No Autosalon with my stealthy install, they'll look at it and laugh at the stockness.
Back to uni 2nd semester... to finish up my degree... Means I'll be driving everyday.
Just working full time atm so catching public transport into the city means I can afford to have the car out of action whilst I'm constructing.

All that hard work now being sold

Hopefully it'll go to a good home

You know the same will happen on the next install. Heaps of work and no time to appreciate it before you want to start something else.

What are your ideas for the next install Team Paul?

Peace

Tim

i know your secret....and have MSN logs to prove

U can't beat me! ever! Though..i might be tempted to build another enclosure, maybe bandpass or ported, and see what numbers i can pull in an spl drag...my monoblock does have more of a SQ orientation than just plain raw power.

you can't keep your secret forever!

I swear u got issues with breaking in and stealing my car/house

All my headunits in here are stock ones... And a few oldies...

Nothing u'd want to drag out...

But I think I might set one up in a big mouse trap just in case

please, don't put any cosmetic products, maccas, kfc, money or car audio equipment on the mouse trap.

Well...who could resist a house full of car audio goodies! :D

Nah, i think i've gotten off to a bad start for SQ....so meh. Atm, im sort of in between, best of both worlds lol

SPL is too common. And too painful for me. I'm going the sq route. Maybe look into ambient tweets if I upgrade my current ones.

Lets all do a sq off :) I'll make some AP enclosures...

With my current crappy pioneer sub you would all beat me in a db drag. Tinsel lead busted on my other sub and im too lazy to get out the soldering iron.

I wanna know secrets!!!

;)

its so common coz its not as hard to perfect as SQ...grab a sub, a few amps, and get the box right  140db+ here we go!...well, both are expensive, and just as difficult in the end, but it depeends on how far you really want to take it
