View Full Version : My TT Magna nearly finished at last!

Just got back to Sydney, after spending a couple of days in Perth for my conjugal visit with my Magna!

As some of you know, it's been at RPW for a few months now, getting a twin turbo conversion done, along similar lines to the RPW TT Magna.

And I am extremely impressed. I spent the best part of 2 days running in the engine, to get it ready for the light tune that was done yesterday. The light tune was with the electronic boost controller turned off, just running around 7psi off the wastegates.

On a very conservative tune, this produced 330.7 Metric HP or 243 KW @ the hubs. I'd say that's about double a stock Magna, which puts it at around 300KW @ the fly wheel!

Torque is now over 440Nm, and even off boost, torque appears stronger than a stock Magna thanks to the cam profile design and lag being minimised with 2 relatively small turbos.

Now that the engine has been run in, heads are to be tightened down, along with tightening all the other hose clamps etc, for a full power tune later this week.

The vehicle will be able to produce around 450HP @ the hubs, but due to the smaller FMIC being used to keep the car street legal, as well as wanting to build in a big safety margin when the car comes back to Sydney, we are going to detune it to 400HP @ hubs, which is plenty for me as the conversion was designed to satisfy every requirement – to remain a perfectly street drivable and legal vehicle that's not a b**** to drive "normally", as well as hopefully getting 12's down the 1/4 mile!

Look out for another update in a week or so! :D

Totally awesome, mate!  I wondered who it was that Dave was talking about on the Mogwa forums.

Make sure you post the slips when you've done the drag passes.

I for one am very jealous! :upyours: hehe

Can you talk $$ for the conversion, or is it all secret? What engine internals did you change?

Edit: That torque curve looks a bit freaky.. maybe some fine tuning to be done still?

Yeah it's a secret! :D

The engine was rebuilt with:
Hypereutectic pistons, modified conrods with ARP rod bolts, ground & balanced crankshaft, larger injectors, new core plugs and Hastings rings. The heads are RPW ported heads with RPW stage 2 turbo cams. The engine was bored out a tiny bit to make room for the pistons. Maybe a 3.55L Magna lol

Definitely still some fine tuning to be done, happening as we speak!

use a real dyno.. not a hub dyno..

you dont drive around on your hubs do you :gtfo:

I'll get a 'real dyno' reading later on when the car is finished just to satisfy the sceptics in the room.

But there can be no argument that the hub dyno provides a far more accurate tune with its mechanical fitment to the hubs - no variations can occur from tyre pressure, tyre location on the rollers etc.

Besides, the real figure is 1/4 mile isnt it? :)

what i was saying is you really couldnt quote "at the wheels" (which you havnt by the way) with what you get "at the hubs"

but i mean, seriously, you dont drive on your hubs ya? :D

well done... keep up the work!

I'll be keeping the running to a minimum for a little while. Lost half my license yesterday to a cop disguised as a tree. 117km/hr in a 70 zone - $350 fine. Still I'm glad I learnt this lesson in Perth rather than Sydney – same offence in Sydney would be $1597, 6 points and automatic 6 month license suspension.

Already ate an XR6T for breakfast yesterday. And held a VY Clubsport at only 60% throttle, no problems. And this was before the light tune was even completed (was running a rough tune that RPW had on file at that stage).

Seriously its not that easy to give a price – there are so many variables and lots of the parts I already had previously like the LSD, ported heads, greddy etc.

But I believe you would be looking at somewhere in the ball park of $11,000 to start a stock Magna boosting on twin turbos.

Here's another earlier pic taken of the engine out of the car.

The intake pipework shown is not the actual pipework on my car, it was just installed for photo purposes. Everything else is mine though, including the turbos and turbo manifolds. :D

Greetings All.

Ok...ok...I dont want to be brought into this...But I think BOoya is trying to say that for compairing power, It should be on a roller dyno rather then a hub...Mainly due to the fact that EVERYONE does it like it to compair power...

On the other hand BOoya, He is only TUNING on the hub dyno, not doing a dyno shoot out...

Well done on the twin turbo effort!! Make sure you take me for a spin...:D

I kept it pretty quiet… didn't want to say anything until the car was actually drivable and had been tuned.

Seems like WA is a bit 'behind' on its speeding laws compared to NSW and Vic! Lucky me!

The first thing the officer said to me when I wound down the window was "You have to be joking... do you know how fast you were going?"… then he started looking all around the car, I'm just waiting for him to ask me to pop the bonnet – but nothing. After that it was cruise control for me, set right on the speed limit, plus speed alarm turned on as well just to be sure!

Near Mandurah sounds about right... can't make out the infringement notice, looks like "Coodanup".

He did all the standard stuff like rego and license check etc, asked me lots of questions like who owned the car, when I got to WA, when I was leaving WA etc. But no attempt to defect anything – another good reason to drive a Magna instead of a commodore or falcon!

Not sure yet if I'll come back to Perth or just get the car transported back when it's finished. Mainly depends on when it's completed.

If I do come back, we'll have to organise a cruise, and if it's on the right day of the week, a drag run as well. I was thinking of a cruise on my recent visit, but I was really busy getting all the run-in KM done, plus fitting in the appointments with RPW, the tuner, etc.

Dave ran the car down the strip last night. He wasn't out to break any records, just give the car a run and make sure nothing breaks. Only did a 14.2, but we're sure not finished yet.

Dave only took the car to 4000rpm in 1st and 2nd gears with only 50% throttle, and my crappy tyres still had no traction from 1st all the way through half of 3rd gear. (Not to mention there are 3 spare wheels in the boot  and it was 31 degrees).

With a decent pair of street tyres and the tune being done tomorrow, there is no doubt it'll make 13's, and with some slicks and a bit of practice, 12's will happen.

Yes, exactly.

To clarify the car was only taken to 4000rpm, because Dave wanted to go easier on it, as it was still in the run-in stage. This run was not to break records it was just a good way to legally do some high speed testing etc.

Everything in now bedded-in, all the hose clamps have been retention, heads have been pulled down etc. The car is due to have its final tune done some time tonight I believe.

Why go to Perth? A few reasons. Haven't found a decent performance shop in Sydney yet! (Not saying there are none). After wasting thousands with reputable places in Sydney for various mods before this, it was enough.

And shopping around, RPW was considerable cheaper than Sydney for the same level of work. Even when you add the transport costs on top.

RPW also has a proven track record with their own Magna TT, and it seems to have stood up to the test of time. Heard too many stories (non-Magna) of people who have done turbo conversions that have gone horribly wrong.

AWD is definitely not a consideration at this time – I think you'd be better off starting with an AWD car first and getting it converted.

I used to live in Mandurah when i was 6/7. What I remember the most was the heat (middle of a heatwave) and that I wasn't at school much because of it. Most days were spent at the beach just to keep cool, although the water was often warmer than I have my shower. :D
As for Bunbury, everytime I hear that placename I remember a joke done by Rodney Rude about being in Bunbury with Jana Went on a picnic and a bee flying up her unmentionables.

Update just in…

I don't have any new power figures yet, the final tune is still not finished, mainly because the car has been at the panel shop for the last couple of weeks getting the kit fitted!

What we have here is a combination of the Bunbury Motor Sports front bar, with the Mitsubishi Sports side skirts, rear pods and wheel arch flares.

The Bunbury front bar is the 2nd design version, with the centre hole completely opened up. http://www.fastmagna.com/kits/index.html

In hindsight I probably would have got the complete Bunbury kit instead, but I already had the Mitsubishi kit to put to use. FYI, Bunbury Motor Sports have just completed a full rear skirt for the magna also.

I was never a fan of the Bunbury kit until I saw it in real life – but anyway here are some pics for you guys to decide.

You'll notice there are also 2 functional Cosworth style vents to help let some of the heat out. And the fog lights are still to go back.

Very smooth looking. Not over done with edges/curves/etc, and stealths the intercooler quite well!

There's about 1 more week's work to go, but it won't begin now until mid-January. Dave @ RPW will be taking the car on holidays with him over the break to put it through its paces.

So around the end of January we should see it at home!

I've got the slim front number plate, I reckon in the normal position will be fine, just needs the holes drilled.

IMHO. the bar looks too 'blocky' and simple/plain. the lines seem too thick. but hey, if you've got a force fed b1tch under the bonnet....... then its best not to argue!!

When you look at the pics on fastmagna it does look pretty plain and blocky but the pics of Velocity's ride looks heaps better and then most people that have seen it in the flesh say it looks hot and completely different to the pics . I can't imagine Velocity putting something on his TT that looks crap after all the $$$ he's spent lol

Hey Velocity you said in your post that in hindsight you would have got the complete Bunbury kit if you hadn't already got the mits kit . Is that because you reckon it would look better with their F/bar or do you like the bunbury kit better cause I'm trying to decide whether to buy a TJ or a TL

After seeing the side skirts and rear from the Bunbury kit in real life, I think they look much better than the Mitsubishi kit.

I just wish the Bunbury kit came with wheel arch flares!

As Velocity said you might change your mind when you see it as the pics do nothin for it but then again you you might not. Having 2 Magnas there with kits and Thunda's TL lowered with mags certainly made a alot of people stop and look which dosn't usually happen with magnas like it does with falcondors and there were heaps of those there. :)

Is there a final power figure yet? Or better yet, a dyno graph?

Unofficially at 402HP on the Dynapack Dyno, but no new graph yet.

Like I said in the very first post, one of the objectives was to achieve 400HP. The set up of the FMIC is the limiting factor here. It was done that way to keep the car street legal and engineerable.

But I don't think 400HP is anything to be ashamed off, and most importantly the car drives well on and off boost. Keeping the car as a daily driver was high on the priority list. Fuel economy on highway driving is around 10L/100KM now, which I am very happy with as well. The car needs to be able to cope with peak hour traffic, nice idle, decent fuel economy etc.

It's 99% finished now, and if all goes to plan it should be coming home in the next 2 weeks or so. I'll have a dyno graph by then, and will be able to get a lot more photos/videos.

Then I can start getting some practice in on the 1/4 mile. At first I will take it easy as I get to know the car. Being a bit presumptuous I am confident to get it down to 12's. To break into 11's is when you need to start playing with the intrusion bar and FMIC design, bigger exhaust, more noise emissions, less street drivability, and harder to engineer etc. Not part of the plan at this stage.

Hahaha... didn't I say no comments about the wheels :)

Ok, it went over with four stock 15's (thanks GTV6 - much appreciated) as a precaution. But we suspected the front brake upgrade wasn't going to fit behind the 15" rim, so I packed two 17's in the boot as well.

They are actually missing the centre cap in that photo. Here's what they should look like, all around of course! lol

Have you thought about black mesh infront of the cooler instead of the cheap looking silver?, I think black will blend in more and give off a slightlly clasier image :P

Point taken. There are a few other cosmetic improvements I have been thinking about too, clear side indicators, 1 piece parabolics, those Altezza style tail lights if they ever come out

Definitely… when you go as far as this with a car, it's a commitment to that car - a keeper. And after all this, the job has to be finished in every way! Performance, exterior and interior enhancements.
