Hey! I own a 1996 V6 TS Magna (89,000ks) It's in its original immaculate condition, and i have had it since brand new! All my services have been carried out by my Mitsubishi dealership where I brought it from, over the last year or so it has started doing a "ticking" noice while ideling! It doesn't do it on first start up in the morning, only when enigine is warm/hot!
My dealership said it was the lifters, so they replaced them, it went away, now its back and a bitt more louder! They recommended I get the injectors cleaned, so i had that done, and the ticking noise is still there!
It's not affecting the performance of the car at all, its got me stumped on what it is! I personaly think it is a faulty lifter again, but my dealership said it's not, and that its just age! I don't buy that! Any suggestions?
Cheers

mine did that and i was embarrased when i had it serviced they said it had no oil!!! i have had to magnas a 1995 and 89 that ticked because of low oil just after start up.... so it might seem strange but have you checked the oil?!?!?! (i assume this cant be it as you have had mitsubishi look at it)

Thanks for ur reply. Yes I check the oil on a regular basis. Plus when my 10,000km service is due, my car hardly uses alot of oil in that period. So no it wouldn't be that... Cheers

hey mate. mine does it too. the reason could be your lifters or tappets. so seeing your lifters have been replaced try the tappets

Cheers mate! Are the tappets a job to be left up to the pro's on the V6's?

yes. i would if you have no real clue about them
also i was told once the type of oil can afect it and the best oil for the astrons was castrol magnatec because of the tappets/lifter problems. could be wrong tho

my tappets are fairly noisey as well but changing to different oils can quieten them. Dont use magnatec tho. Just try a few good types of oil to see which will work.

Hey all!
I used to use Magnatec oil, but that sent the lifters banging a hell of alot louder than normal! I no longer go to my Mitsubishi Dealership for services, coz im given the run around to much, so my Magna goes to a performance racing service centre here in Brisbane, they want the car all day to pin point where the tapping is coming from! Most probably a faulty lifter they think (They are still under warranty from when my dealership replaced them)! So i'll wait and see! Cheers all!

yep had the same problem , put my car in to have the valve seals done , it came back with a tapping noise , put it back in and told them it had a noisy tappet/lifter , it was only one but one can make a real noise , i suggest that when you go back to mitsubishi you tell the bloke that books the car in that you want some one who nows how to fix the problem , not a second or third year mechanic but one of the blokes incharge :)

I have had the same noisy tappet problem on my magna, After getting a mech to replace the tappets it ran fine for a few months before the noise came back. They do not last very long, but you can by a bottle from k-mart or big w, that stops your engine from making the ticking sound. But it's best added to your engine after you drop your old oil. then leave the car running for a few minuets before adding the bottle. I now only hear the tappets for a few seconds when the car is cold, and then the noise subsides. Might be worth a try.

Howdy all!
I had all me car looked over today with the loud ticking noise coz its getting louder, parrently its the tappets! How much is something like that to fix? Would you recomend fixing it?
Also, when my car is idiling at traffic lights, it feels like its going to stall sometimes! The rev's drop, then they go up a lill, then drop a lill! My mech said to run it on Premium fuel, but i always have done! Any other suggestions?
Cheers

Well, my tappets are stuffed too. Used to be an on and off sound (come and go) but now its constant, and its more than one tappet.
Does anybody know a good price to have all tappets replaced? (including labour)
I've been quoted some pretty big numbers and it really doesn't seem right.
If i do it myself i can get tappets for about $10-15 a piece, but finding the time to do it is hard with school.

Hey.... Sorry if this doesnt make any sence.... But my Grandfather is a mechnic and when my car started ticking when idle and going (lol) he fixed what he called the " Timeing Chain " well i havnt had a tick since.... sorry if that made no sence LOL :doubt:

timing chain is something completely different. it is tho the other main problem that the astrons have. in fact i cant think of many which havnt had one or the other problem. Our engines use a chain over the cam shaft and such instead of belts like other engines and when the chain comes loose it causes rattles and a slight clicking noise if its causing the oil pump to malfunction. The tappets cause a different noise which is when they are trying to spray oil down from the top of the engine but are failing miserably. im not the msot technically knowledgable here so someone is most likely to correct me and give you a better explenation anyway. i dont know even y im reponding. i drank too much which is impressive for a sunday night.
I own a TS Magna Wagon 94 Model with 118,000klm on the clock.
The lifters have only just started to slightly tick when warm.
Its not enough to be annoying.
I use Mobil XHP Plus Motor oil as recommended by the local Mitsubishi Dealer and change oil and filter every 5000klm.
Motor runs fine and burns no oil.

Lash adjusters, simple.
The lash adjusters need good quality oil, as the motor gets older things get dirty. If changing them it is a good idea to give the rocker gear a good clean as well as the tops of the heads.
I did mine about 9 months ago, still like new.
They also have to be properly bled when installed.
