I thought about this alot when designing my audio system, ideal spot would be up the top of your windscreen (1 in each corner), or at the bottom corners/just on the door in the corner(problem with that is wiring to the door. You could even place them in the middle of your air vents for something different :).

Ideal spot is in the kick panels as deep and far away as possible. This minimises path difference and gives the best staging.
Also as close to the woofer as possible this minimises separation.

Don't bounce tweeters off glass, you'll hear the tweeter then the reflection. tweeters are very directional, you need to point each one at the opposite head rest.

Soz not flaming... But up the top of ur windscreen is an undesirable spot... Argh... If one tweeter is right next to your ear you will have no sense of 'stereo' and sh!t all staging. Not to mention a very painful right ear.

or do you mean on top of the dash?

If you are after sq, you want it in a position that best re creates the original music. As the driver doesnt sit in the middle of the car, you have to deal with these limitations.
Think of a tweeter up the top of the windscreen, from the drivers point of view, the right tweeter is say 30 cm from his ear, compared to the opposite tweeter which is say a 100cm from his ear. Compare this to tweeters in the kick panels next to the woofer; If you are fairly tall with your seat back, the right side is about 120cm away from your ears and the left is 150cm away.
So we have 30:100 up on the windscreen compared to 120:150 in the kicks.
You always want to minimise the path difference to get the best staging. This way your ears hear left and right at the same volume.

Now if we were watching movies from the middle of the back seat this would be a different story, but cars are a crap environment for good quality sound.
/ramble

Mind you I know a lot of people that like being able to hear the tweeters and the woofers separately. And in the end it comes down to wat you like. They are your ears.

(and yes time alignment can fix some of these problems, but will sound crap for your passenger)

Peace

Tim

What you say is true, it just depends what you're after, a system that sounds good to the driver, or a system that sounds alright to everyone. Up the top corners of the windscreen will get great volume, sure will screw with the stereo sound abit but at that close quarters it'd be pretty hard tell the difference in volume (judging by my 4 inches in the dash). Having them up the top like i said is good for everyone, but if you wanted them good for the driver, you'd pretty much have to have one at the top right corner, and hten on in the middle up the top.
I agree with everything you say, just depends on what your goal is. My goal is to make it sound ok to everyone, and it'd be pretty hard to pick up volume difference and its really easy to detect the stereo sound (i know cuz of my 4 inches). :)

For both passenger and driver the path difference will be identical.
If your goal is to have it sounding ok then thats cool.
But a bit of rewiring and you could have it sounding the way the sound engineers intended it to.
Give it a try if you get some time. If you don't like how it sounds then I'll stand corrected, but if you're after good sound quality, you definetly want your tweets close to your midbasses, and as far away from the driver as possible.

When you're in your car next turn off the engine, play some tunes, something with strings etc, and nice vocal highs. Shut your eyes face forward, and picture where the singer is.

Peace

Tim

this is where i put my tweeters ;)

Probably not the best place to be, but oh well, it sounds better than in-my-ear-blood-yielding treble u get from having the tweeters on teh sail mounts.

Oh, that was a different thing altogether. You're supposed to be looking at the tweeters not my door trims!! There are heaps of other people on here with fluffy door trims. Ask around. You don't suggest they are all gay now do u? :P
