ok my problems with my TL are continuing.. at the tender old age of 11000k's old the magna has developed a ticking sound which sounds very much like the sound of tappets or something.. normally i would ignore this in a car but for something that hasnt even reached its second service yet? FFS!! My question is is it normal for 3.5's to have slightly noisy tappets and valves and stuff or is this some kind of problem? Im guessing if i ask the dealership they will just say "its normal mate" or "your hearing things mate" so i decided to ask some people who might actually know whats the go here

I do alot of freeway driving
but mine still does that nosie when i first start it in the morning then it goes away.
what type of oil are you using?

but if that noise get louder get it checked

tell me does the ticking sound go away when you rev the engine up?
RJL25

the ticking sound is ALWAYS there at idle, however when you rev the engine off idle it goes away
sounds to me like the tappets r going... that is quite quick.

sounds like it could be the lifters .
Its not a loud noise it is?
but try using another type of oil that might make the nosie go away.
I use semi synthetic oil or if you want go full synethic

i think after only 11 000k's i will just get the dealership onto it at the next service, then when they say "nothing wrong with it mate" i will start throwing things. Sometimes when i start it early in the morning and the engine is cold, it has a slight miss for a few seconds before it starts working properly.. im thinking maybe one of the valves is sticking? would that be making a similar kind of sound???

Yeah take it to them. My 2003 TJII has never made any sounds like that it now has 30000km and the engine trouble I had when it was new was a faulty battery, ie I would start it and it would stall, I would leave the lights one for a minute then have to jump start it.
these engines are incredibly quiet and they should sound like a vaccuum cleaner - smooth and purring at all times.

I imagine you have checked the timing and it is all ok?
My TF 3L manual is starting to tick a bit, but then again it is at 100k and due for a timing belt. I have heard of the timing belts letting go VERY early in the engine's life, like around 15K.
A mate's 3.5L let go at about 15K and they ended up replacing the entire engine.....

My 3.0 TF has the same sound, like a soft knocking sound on idle (always, hot or cold) and goes away with revs above 1500rpm...

the dealers will say that cause they won't want to look in to it as they will have to pay not you.
If they don't do anything go to the top. thats what I do and it works

Greetings All.
Yeah, mine always makes a ticking noise...and mine just had a service...
Apparently they are just noisy engines...

I thought they would of improved the engine
but for a engine that has only under 11 000 k's on it well it shouldn't really do that.
mmmm

anyone heard of the WeiBull distribution? basically, things have a high probability of failing early in its life and late in its life, in the middle the hazard function is relatively low.

I had the same problem, and a small fix for it is to use thicker oil, I was using 10W-40 (always got the tappets tapping), now I'm using 15W-60 (Penrite HPR15), and the tapping is noticibly quieter.
good luck.

I use to check noises in the engine by placing a large screwdriver pointy end on the rocker cover or inlet manifold and the handle on your ear (don't do this the other way around lol ).
You can probably tell from this where the noise is originating ie timing chain, tappets or elsewhere. Could be oil pressure too but either way you wouldn't expect it on such a new engine. Only other thing I can think of is giving it a good thrashing (gently) particularly if your normal driving is really sedate.

Hahahah I tryed the same thing, but used a bit of wood instead, sounded like the noise is originating from the valve train.
With the other people experiencing this sound does the ticking increase with revs? (mine does until it passes around 1,300-1500rpm an stops)

Same thing happened with me, they serviced the car, and said nothing of he sound, just told me the power steering fluid needs changing. I thought they would have picked it up if it was seriouse??

Tried that, while slightlly quieter still can here it. Some one suggested running an engine flush before every oil change to remove built up sludge from around the valve train as this somwtimes creates sticky vlavle wich could lead to noisy valves

yep i think its defenetly coming from the valve train, as i said some times when i do a cold start the car will slightly miss for a few seconds before starting to idle normally.. also i have noticed my engine isnt as smooth as a friends TJ magna is.. any thoughts? i was thinking possibly a valve wasnt being actuated properly by the tappets or whatever... all i know is that its pissing me right off.. its only a slight tapping sound.. but its always there and it defently wasnt there when it was brand new.
Problem is this car is my work car, if its in the shop being fixed, i cant work, therefore i dont get paid. Ive already lost 5 working days in the last 3 months because of warranty fix's and its really starting to piss me off

Mine had that. It was piston slap. They ended putting a new "short" motor in it (ie; a new complete block, and put the original heads, etc. back on).

no, dealers say that 'cos they have no idea and are not interested in problems.. dealers pay sweet F.A on warranty work, mitsu australia pays! id try another dealer if the current mob are no good, and id say u may have to leave it overnight, so they could check the " missing when cold " problem!
Goto a dealer that offers a replacement car??
And kick up a fuss.

My car (TE 3.0) has a noisy tappet, and noisy idler bearings, and a noisy thrust bearing/input shaft bearings, and a bloody grindy/graunching noise coming from the top end of the engine. Stuff knows what it is and the bloody thing is only 115000k old. The grinfy noise seems to go away when the revs increase or there is load on the motor, ie, accelerating.
Any ideas on what it could be?
Maybe its time to save for another motor and do a nice TT build up while this one still goes. :D

ok here we are
im back anyway for the pappet noise i recomend that anyone who has the glimps of any tappet noise goint to there dealer and booking it in for an oil change and telling them to put in 100 ml of this special oil called " Pro-ma NBL80"
now this is an extreamly thick oil and very expensive like 20 dollars for that 100 mls but i tell u all it works and that noise stops just like that.
and for any other noises from the top
if u havent had your cam belt done at thie recomended time i sudgest u do and at the same time get new tensioner pullies maybe an idler and a new water pump and then ur engine will be like breand new
the blocks on these new magna engines are very strong and so is the internal running gear in most cases but the hydrolic lifters (tappets) get a bit sad in older age but the stuff works well.
