Anyone help with:

Where from?

What rating (amps)?

How much?

Cheers

A *competent* auto electrician

>What rating (amps)?

160 Amperes or more IF your excitor + diode pack is up to it.

>How much?

The cost of the conversion (delta phase winding) and your own alternator.

Seriously, you can 'rewind' an 80 amp alternator to double, and sometimes close to triple its original output - you are not rewinding persae, but rather rewiring - delta phase works on the principle that the output of an alternator is (kinda like) a three phase motor - rather than taking the sum of the three windings (in voltage) you run the output of three phases in parallel. Lower voltage at idle, but higher current capacity.

It can have explosive results on diode packs - make sure that they are well and truly up to it, and, preferably (if you are using this for something like car audio - DB drag racing) that you use a double pulley for the belts - I shredded several belts (they smell awful when they start to smoke)

I forgot to add - best diodes for these are shottky diodes - they have the lowest voltage drop (and hence power dissipation at full current draw) - the TO-220 versions as used in computer switchmode power supplies are ideal, the mounting of the diode pack is left as an exercise for the student :)

what is it for? it would take some SERIOUS power drain to make your alternator not be sufficient.

I wasn't after 160A, more like 110 or so. I have got some heavy ICE and would like some more charging.

Is there one I could buy off the shelf and have fitted rather than a re-wind?? I would like to keep my current one as a backup if the worst happens....

Heath, electrical seems to be your thing.... Alternators are not my thing.....

arent standard 3rd gen magna alternators about 110-120a anyway?

an alphine system isnt gonna need anything more then a 80amp alternator

alpine isnt exactly power hungry

if anything put a better battery in

I've got a 13-plate bosch jobbie in there at the moment.

I'm going for a big amp upgrade soon, and the voltages are all over the place already. Getting a cap to try and stiffen supply to the amps also.

Any other ideas? dual batteries (one for engine in engine bay, audio batttery like an optima Yellow Top in the boot)??
