I havnt done this ... but it may work :)
thread a nut onto the shaft all the way to the base..
Grab a LARGE sheet and put it inside your car around the shaft and over the seats.
Grind off the excess of the shaft down to the point you want ...
Then simply unwind the nut to "re thread the shaft"
Well thats what Id do if I had a Manual :D

I cut mine with a hack saw while it was still in the car, its not hard just takes a bit of time to get the height right 8)

You going to cut it THAT low?
Id check it first....
Id cut it to the lowest point still using some of the origional thread as I said above....
If you are going lower than that... then you would need a Tap and Dye kit... The dye would cut the new thread... but since the shaft is prob quit large in Diameter... it may be expensive or hard to get one that size..

if i keep the original thread.. the most i can chop off is about 3/4 inch.. id like to go down by around 1.5-2 inches..
also im using an aftermarket gearknob so the thread isnt needed.. just not sure if the gearknob will fit because the threaded area is a lot thinner

You could always do it properly and get a short shift kit in - not only reduces stick height but stick thro as well!!

Yeah mate of mine has the short shift kit.. I like the up and down throw of it but not the sideways closeness. Id probably slot the car back into first or go straight to 5th by mistake if i was dragging. Also it doesnt reduce the height by anywhere near enough for me. My gearknob is pretty tall

I like my stock stick
I can change quick enough as is and it is much shorter than myold corolla foot and a half long stick!!

yeh i just want the stick to be shorter.. it was fine with the old gearknob but this 1 is too tall. its not a problem shifting it just dun look as good

Why not do it properly with a short shifter assembly?

like i said earlier dont like the sideways closeness of the short shifter and the stick isnt short enough.. only reason im chopping the stick is coz i dont like the look of how high the gearknob is.

Hey Manual the Corolla's stick ain't THAT bad! I had to stuff half a dozen split washers down the knob to get the 'H' lined back up properly tho. It's only weird 'cos it sits so far forward (and the KE20 - KE55 Corolla's are rally cars by inadvertent design so it works). :D
If you want to talk monster sticks just look at the one in my housemates RE Colt! **** you bash the passengers knee going for 2nd! (Mind you if she was a babe that's ALL good ;) )
A die will cut the stick (assuming you can find a die that big, usually threads that size are rolled in or cut on a lathe), but ideally it needs to come off and be machined down to a proper diameter.
OR you could do a cut & shut so you retain the threaded top section but this will only work if it's a uniform shape/diameter all the way down if you want an exposed stick, if you have a leather cover cut away with a hack-saw and then... s*** I don't think solder is strong enough, you need to weld it but even a mig welder could do some serious damage in your car.
Yeah.. how badly do you want that 1.5" - 2" off? 'Cos I can't see you achieveing it without removing the stick from the car. :?

If you get an aftermarket gear nob they all come with a plastic sleave that fits over the stick and you are able to tighten that up so that it doesnt slip 8) Then if you want you could just put the stock nob back on EASY :D

I shortened my one in my TN and I just undid a couple of bolts/nuts... took it out, took it to my mates work.... cut about 1-1.5" out of the middle and then he tacked the top threaded bit back on ... I thought it looked good.... so he them welded it up adn tehn ground it smooth...
I put some primer on it and stuck it back in... took about 2 hrs including traveling time...
One tip .. if you are cutting from the middle, we fillited the edges to allow more surface area to weld to..
