A friend from work has a TH 3.5 auto and says that when he drove TJ 3.5 auto's they did not have as much go as his, he reckons the TJ's a more sluggish, I can't see why other than the fact that the TJ is still newer and the ones he drove were probably still too tight and not run in yet, I have heard that 3.5 Magnas are like that, faster when they have clocked up a few K's.

TJ's are heavier than the TH, but the TJ have an extra 5kw's standard. not sure if the power difference is enough to make up for the weight difference though. probably very similar

A series 2 TJ should be noticably more powerful than a TH - they got a cam upgrade in the TJ series II which took them up to 155 flywheel Kw compared to about 147 (i think - don't shoot me).

Perhaps the difference was because of the "intuitive ECU" in the magna's which 'learn' your driving habits and adjust the auto's shift points based on your recent driving patterns. If your mate always drives with a heavy foot, and the TJ he got into was driven like an 'old lady' - he might be used to the gearbox shifting at like 4,500 and this one shifts at 3,000 because of the difference in 'recent driving habits'. In my book that would definetly make the car 'feel' more sluggish.

I know I get a hell of a lot better response when I use the tippy (and therefore contol the shift points), that when I just put the foot down in drive (I'll admit it - I drive like a nanna most of the time  )

like black beard said. weight difference is so little its insignificant. a MY00-MY01 TJ is equally as quick as a TH. A MY02-MY03 TJ is quicker than a TH thanks to the better cams.

Additional info: All TJ vrx's have the improved cams so if you got a my02 TJ and fitted a better exhaust you would be just as quick as a vrx.

Theoretically the TJ should be quicker.
As for looks the TH is the best looking by far. :bowrofl:

Thanks what do you mean by MY02, I understand obviously 02 means year 2002 but what does 'MY' mean? "model year or something"? So If I got a 2002 TJ advance and put a better exhaust on it it would go as well as a VRX? Isn't the VRX a tiptronic and does the tiptronic produce better performance or does it just offer more user flexibility? I have actually mentioned this question in another thread.

Tiptronic (as far as anyone I've spoken to knows) is same as the same geared auto box (4 or 5 spd) mechanically - differece is the the "user flexibility".

Again - as far as anyone I've spoken to knows.... , the only difference between a TJ+ VRX and a TJ series II (mechanically speaking - power to weight, the VRX is heavier than sports or Exec) is the hi-flow/straight thru muffler. In otherwords - you can get the same mechanical performance, with a weight advantage by fitting a hi-flowing muffler to a TJ series II as the equivelant VRX.

Lotsa ppl on here will recommend the Manual - cause they are more responsive than the auto (tourque converter eats about 7% of power at the wheels by all accounts) - but if you like the convenience of the auto - then the 5spd tiptronic would have to be the best option. As the owner of a 4spd tippy - I can say from experience that 2nd is VVVVEEEEERRRRRRRYYYYYYY tall.

Thanks for the informative response depending on what a TJ series 2 costs I'll see how I go.

Sports/VRX stock rear muffler is not straight through, its a tri-flow. SO, in actual fact if you got a 2002 manual exec and put a straight through exhaust system on, it should, in theory be quicker than a stock manual Sports/VRX

Late model auto versions will always be different between exec and VRX as they have 4 & 5 speed autos respectivly

Speaking of tip-tronic transmissions, would say a TH Magna Sports tip transmission drop right into my TH exec? :D

This thread will tell the story: http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6362

Verdict: Seems quite easy to phyiscally mod - however ECU wise is where the unanswered secrets lay :( Without inside knowledge/documentation of how it works, it's just all too confusing/hard in the end.

(Why didn't i ask for magna ECU source code for christmas :D)
