i started a thread on how to change the illumination of the cluster but my other question in the thread took over so this thread is solely to find out the answer on "HOW TO CHANGE THE CLUSTER ILLUMINATION FROM WHITE TO BLUE"
if i swap the globes used at the moment for LED's do i need to use resistors or is there someway of keeping the original type of globe and getting it in another colour?
Basically i am after the quickest and easiest way to change the illumination colour without mucking around with soldering tiny electrical stuff.
any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ok go to Autobarn and buy 4 blue leds, the bigger type and tell em what it's for, they are $20, I did this and it's the easiest way of changing colour, dont try and sleave the old bulbs with those cover things, they are too dark to see at night, but they work well for the other spots in the dash, like behind the vent controls, I made them red, so it matches my Blaukpunkt head unit, which is blue and red.

And NO, you dont need resistors for these leds, you just unplug the old bulb and plug in the new one.

are they $20 each or for all 4?
if i take out the globe that is behind the cluster at the moment and take it to autobarn is it the same style globe but in blue?
is it a LED or a wedge globe?
or
is it the type of led that is inside a wedge globe housing?

A LED is not the same as a bulb, however the both emit light using different methods.

Just make sure u get 12V LEDs and that u connect them the right way.

A LED has an anode A (positive +) and a cathode K (negative -), the cathode is the shorter of the 2 legs.

If these (LED) are replacing wedge type bulbs the legs may push in the socket for the bulb, but I haven't done it so not 100% sure.

LED = Light Emitting Diode (white man magic) glows when current flows.
Normal Bulb (filliment type) = Glass enclosure with a filliment that glows when current passes thru it. A fluro is different.

For those tempted I don't think we need go into how P N juctions work. :D

I went to autobarn and bought the replacement lights to fit the cluster, but it dosent really seem to be all that bright at night, is there anything that can be done to make it brighter

The problem with the LED replacement bulbs is that they are not diffused enough, nor bright enough...

To make them brighter - unfortunatly, unless you can replace the series resistor to increase the current to the bulb (and hence reduce their lifetime) - probably no.

You can buy white globes called artic blues or cool blue depending on the brand and get blue silicon sleeves and just like magic you have a bluish light. Sometimes the light can be aqua but you can only try i guess

when I originaly replaced the globes in the cluster they were the wedge globes with coloured glass and still not bright enough, the LED inside the wedge globe is directional and only shoots in one direction, therefore some parts of the cluster is brighter then others.
Im going to try and get some of that neon cable type light and place it inside the cluster so that the light travels where I want it to.

Hi All,

I replace the 4 main stock bulbs (with blue sleeves) with the colored red bulb which I got it from Autobarn. I had the problem as "3diamondgal", not bright enough.

Having read thru a few other thread, replacement LED will make it brighter.. unfortunately, I do not know how to make it myself... I check Ebay and come across these one (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=36607&item=4511308295) ... Can anyone tell me if they are able to do the job???

Your advise is very much appreciated.. Ta.

Hey buddy. Try the "cable light" which is called Flexi-Glo if you want but I tried that also and wasn't worth the effort. The coloured glass globes is the best I could come up with. However i'm gonna let you in on a secret... There is a place.. a magical place..that will custom make any cluster to your specs in digital for about $500. Just like in the Toyota Soarer. This is just a little rumour i've heard and i haven't had the time to investigate yet.

Can someone please post a pic of their successful cluster illumination transformation...

I wanna really see what it looks like before i start pulling things apart

Thanx!

ok so the LED's have a directional light
i was wondering
if you put some clear silicone on the top of the LED and made a custom defiuser?
just a thought

Here you guys, i put red LED's in my verada today.
It looks alright, but it is really bright directly infront of the LED's, gets dimmer further a way from the LED's
You can see at its really bright at 40km, and 3 and 8 grand on the tacho.

Heres a pic of mine although they're not real good, looks a bit brighter in the flesh, eg you can hardly see the needles in the photo. I used coloured glass bulbs I got from australian auto (http://www.australianauto.com.au/) Would like to do some coloured dial faces too but I dont really know how to go about it. What to print th

Thanx guys! Really appreciate it!

Well, i mite just start on it this weekend. Mite stick with the BLUE, however the red does look sweet but since my car is a dark metallic blue, mite just have to stick with the blue.
