View Full Version : confused performance figures for the 1999 TH 3.5 sports semi auto

I have looked up performance figures on the internet for the magna 3.5 auto, the exec and advance TH\TJ auto with 147 kw and 150 kw for the TJ is about 9.2secs 0-100 and 16.5secs 0-400m. But then I came across a road test on the 1999 TH sports tiptronic auto,
they quoted the engine's output at 147kw and 300nm torque and yet it's figures are about 8.1 secs for the 0-100 dash and 15.6 0-400m, which is Ford XR6 or VL turbo times, if it were the 163kw engine I'd understand it but it seems to be the same engine as the standard TH.
I think it would have only been a 4 spd semi-auto gearbox which they referred to as 'Gladys'......can someone clear this up? It has me really scratching my N..ts, sorry I meant head, could they have miss printed the engine output? Very impressive, I want one.

NO that sounds about right I have a 1998 Magna sportz (3.0L) manual tho and I ran a 15.600 0-400m, and that was with alot of wheel spin in first and second.

But yours is a manual, even as a tiptronic it is still an auto and in a straight line shouldn't be that much (1 second @ 0-400 which is a long time) different in acceleration to the plain invecs auto which in a TH\TJ 3.5 is recorded as 9.2 0-100 16.5 0-400 NRMA road test, I posted another thread on the 3rd gen forum regarding actual performance figure differences between the auto tippy and non tippy auto.
A manual 3.0 3rd gen magna is in Ford XR6's company and a manual 3.5 may beat a manual XR6, but I am only talking autos and I don't see why a tiptronic would cause such a drastic increase in outright straight line acceleration, when it is really only a semi auto shifter not a manual gearbox. I still want one and I am a rear wheel drive man.

the manual magna gearbox's are ok, the auto's are absolute sh*t and the tippy doesn't shift under full load anywhere near as far as you can in a manual.
are you unable to drive a manual, why so much focus on auto's?

Because I am too lazy to drive a manual, and bad left knee, but yes, good point, nothing hauls like a manual, and when I do get back into a manual car I realise how much I miss driving them especially through the hills where you have full control with heel and toe, engine braking before corners and feathering the clutch for aditional performance whenever you want it,
For real driving an auto is not a real car really, but I enjoy manual RWD cars for drifting or power sliding, that is fun, whether I am very good at it or not I don't know, drifting takes more skill than most people think. I am older now, have kids and generally like an old man's sports car.....an auto that goes, but I agree with your comments.

from times that people have actually performed in their cars, not what a magazine says, these are the sort of figures I would expect out of these following magnas with very basic mods (panel, muffler):
TE-TH 3L man 15.4
TE-TH 3L auto 15.9-16.0
TH 3.5L man 14.9
TH 3.5L auto 15.5-15.7
TH 3.5L tippy 15.4-15.6?
TJ 3.5L man 14.8
TJ 3.5L tippy 15.5

TJ 3.5L man 14.8
TJ 3.5L tippy 15.5
There pretty good times especially for the autos, what kind of mods to get these sort of times? The TJ 3.5L man time of 14.8 is outstanding, a stock Nissan 200sx only does about that and 14.8 is only a tenth of a second slower than the original GTHO XY351 4 speed (14.7)

muffler and k&n panel or pod.
A VRX with just panel filter ran 14.71 last time i was at willowbank. My 3L manual with muffler and panel filter ran 15.39, and then 15.15 with the addition of CAI piping. 4PLEAZN (i think it was him) ran around 15.4 in his normal auto 3.5L TH with just muffler and pod/panel. The sandman ran 15.5 in his tiptronic VRX (stock i think).
There are plenty of other examples around these forums to back those figures up.

Was the VRX that ran 14.71 a manual or tiptronic? Great times, is your 3L standard other than the different muffler? Isnt a panel filter standard anyway?

i don't believe that for a second, was the track wet? The local drag strip is totally screwed, I can only get a chirp out of second on the road but on the strip it spins second. Its the strip.

yep willowbank is a sticky mofo!
i would only start to get wheelspin on take off if i launched from above 2800rpm. Thats with the cheapest 17 inch tyres i could find too
