I have a 1994 TS Magna Exec auto which has just come back from a service (180,000 K).
Since then it intermittently stays in 1st until about 4,000 rpm, then 2nd till about 3500 rpm then finally into 3rd.
Occassionally it kicks back to 2nd when cruising at about 65KPH on a flat road.
Today It kicked back to 3rd from Overdrive at about 115Km on a flat road.
When accelerating heavily in 3rd at about 60KPH, it will not kick back to 2nd.
The Mitsubishi Service Centre has had it for a couple of days and keeps telling me it's fixed, but because it's intermittent, it's OK when they test it. They don't seem to know where to go next.
Any clues?
Cheers

Something like that is beyond most of us here. Two words for that problem: WARRANTY JOB! If they say they have fixed it and its operating like that, I mean that is whack. It might be a bit of stuffing around not having your car again for a bit but definately get on the phone and tell them that they stuffed your transmission!

Hmmm my knowledge on cars is limited but sounds to me like when they serviced your car, your car is now behaving differently and the ECU is confused, Try disconnecting your battery for 5 minutes and then reconnecting it, thus resetting the ECU. Once the ECU is reset it will re-learn your car and hopefully this might fix the problem. Happened to me once when i had a service. Although mine wasn't nearly as bad as yours

not sure if these cars have a TPS (throttle position sensor). if so, it wouldnt be a bad idea to re-calibrate it. this is the case if you recently d/c your battery, and may result in poor shifts and at the wrong rpm. check out a hanyes or gregories.

Hey!
I had the same prob with my V6 TS.. Mitsubishi kept saying it was fine etc etc, so a cousin of mine who also had the same prob told me to take it to a Automatic Transmission centre! I left it with them all day, they did a Transmission service on it, and said that the codes where out, thats why it's changes where s**t house! Car has been running perfect ever since! Cheers!

Unplugging the battery and reconnecting it should clear the codes in the ECU and costs nothing, or you could get someone to do it for $70, up to you!

Hey! We disconected the battery in my Magna when i was having Auto probs, it done nothing but clear the codes on the Radio lol!
Thats when I took it to a Transmission fella, who put sensors on it to check if the codes were right, a few were out! That was fixed then I had them service the Transmission coz I don't agree with my Mitsubishi service manual that it should be done every 50,000ks to 60,000ks! Every 30,000ks is much more like it, but it also depends on the driving habbit to I guess! Cheers

Hi all and thanks for your help. Thought I would give the final story for your interest.
Forgot to mention before that when the “fault” was on, the Check Engine light would come on and the car would idle at about 1300 rpm.
Drove the car back to service on Monday morning with no problems, but when I was waiting to get into the service area, the light came on. I idled in and refused to turn off the engine until they had checked it out.
When the Service manager attached their “computer”, it threw up two fault codes
TPS irregular settings
TPS shorted
I thought we had found the problem finally, but when they turned off the car and restarted the codes did not reappear.
I asked them to take the car on some long drives and see what happened. They replaced a part of the wiring loom and tested all day Monday, and then fixed some corroded connectors. Tested again all day Tuesday – no fault until late in the day when it locked into 2nd and stayed there. The “computer was attached at the time and gave out
TPS shorted.
Apparently, locking into 2nd is the “fail safe” if the TPS dies.
Upshot is – they replaced the TPS, charged me $370 for it, waived all the labour charges, and promised me a discount on the next service.
No problem since.
Once again, thanks for your help and advice, Merry Christmas and happy driving.
