what common faults do you knows know about, or have experianced with your TJ
so far im aware of
fresh / recycle air vent, not staying on recycle, therefore when you stuck behind a few trucks, all you can smell is diesel (fixxed in the 2nd week)
Horns, are shit, ive had 3... waiting on my air horns :)
electric windows.. needs a few wire or they can stop working
y joint between resinators needs changing, rattles and splits easy...
tiptronic & ECU breaks easy ??? :) mmmm manual conversion
air sensors break on VRX .... im getting that checked
anyone think or know of any other ones?

None of the above so far, thankfully, but I have a problem with the fuel tank - if you fill it up to far it leaks under the car and smells bad!
Oh yeah - the tyres I got with it loose traction far too easily :o) Got done for undue noise... crap.

ok glad to say in the year ive had my car (from brand new).. 0 problems. (hopefully i havent just jynxed it) Only thing ive had to take the car in for is a missing power cable for the eletric aerial motor. That was because it was the first exec to come with eletric aerial standard. Oh and i had to take my car in to get some fuses replaced because me the fool caused a short circuit when i dropped the screwdriver. Thats all :D

Mine is a TH, but all the same:
Catalytic converter.. KABOOM!!!!!!!!! Well, almost!
Electric window
Central locking
Remote for central locking
Rattle from the fan if it is higher than 1
Rattle from the parcel shelf
Window washers
Most of which happened in the first 6-8 weeks of having it... car yard closed about one week after I got it... must have been why it was so cheep!!

It got a TJ Series 1 Exec. :D
1. No interior light when drivers door opened :(
2. Also alarm wont arm once drivers door closed and button pressed on keyfob. Have to open and close front passenger door then press lock, so that little green light on dash comes on. :(
3. Front passenger door rattling :(
4.Centre console squeaks occasionally, especially when you press it. (Crappy plastic) :(
5. Front brakes have 'hot spots' from slowing down from 220km/hr!    (I would put the provate road disclaimer, but I dont know any 'private roads' you can do 220 on!)
Thats it for annoying ones. :D

Prob because the little door light switch on the B pillar has had its cable removed...
Check it by carefully removing the rubber cover and then a Phillips head screwdriver to remove the switch...
Check with a Voltmeter that you are getting a circuit through that switch...
It is a Ground switch that earths to the body and thus turns on the dome light...
It registeres to the ar that you have opened the door and thus allows the alarm to be activated.. Fix this problem and no 1 and 2 will disapear :)

I can't stand the shitty plastic on the centre console. It really starting to irk me because its constantly, and i mean constantly squeaking.
A fortnight ago i pulled it all apart and sprayed all the plastics with Shelleys Ezy Glide.
Put it all back together. Was probably good for a few days, then the friggin squeaks came back.
I just dont understand how they can use plastics that belong in a bloddy hyundai excel.
The interior feels like your in a 10 grand econo box.

I have no idea what you guys are on about with this skeaing plastic - cos i have removed mine and re-sprayed it and it has never squeaked!!
Does the TJ still have the fabric around the outside of the plastic?? Like on teh edges - so it sn't plastic on plastic?

Thats correct manual on my TJ it has the fabric.. no squeaking.. Only problems i have had was squeaky brakes.. getting fixed... Might have to change the transmission as when i go from Park to Drive there is a delay.. not good at all.. especially when its cold!! blew a pink fuse i think something to do with the window up on my car.. but i was stranded for a whole day and had to get it towed!!!! car was DEAD!

Mines got velvet stuff too.
what i mean is that, when you hit a bump (even little bumps or even driving along a smooth road) the plastic squeaks, even the side air vents.
i dunno, it must move around and rub on the other plastic.
i'm actually thinking of super glueing the air vents and the plastic surround that surrounds the radio and HVAC control.
it wont move then! :D
hey when you hit a bump does your drivers door move. sometimes i hear the glass rub against the rubber on the b-pillar!
and yes i dodge potholes and bumps where possible. ;)
freaky stuff!

When you guys were speaking of the air sensor going in the TJ, what are the symptoms of that fault? When i am accelerating (say about 3000 rpm) I get a noise like a WRX from the engine, thats all good, but i also loose power, and takes a lot longer to wind up. Any ideas?
The good people at mitsu are looking at it on monday.
Got my pioneer DeH 5550 put in yesterday, with my 12inch, 5 chan amp. just looking for some 6 x 9's, as the stockies are a joke.
VRXing. 8)
only problem ive had with my 98 advance is the centre console cheap plastic falling apart!!! it aint holding onto the clips.. so im waiting to get my sterio installed to fix it
OH and besides the belt tensioner deciding to Release itself from the engine and go for a run down girrawheen somewhere.... $200 oh well...
What else? boot works fine i like the release button :P the power to do things from a distance is awesome!
Oh yeah the car vibrates when slowly accelerating but the mitsi parts people said its my auto oil being old... and they said get a auto service done! so besides that i love the car!! beats driving a 200b/vw around any day :P

Hey had mine for 6 months work for Mits so know of a few common problems, window reg drivers side is a major one, as some of you have found out, ie window doesn't go up no more. A few others problems I can think of straight off the top of my head, cat convertors a bad batch must be out there as some are going faulty, trip computers die and even under warranty are just fixed, warped front disks, triptronic problems with series one.
Of course could also tell a few problems with Ford and Holden, like dropped oil pressure in the Gen 3 V8, and over heating problems, or Ford haveing cracked rings in the turbo BA, so we are not alone.......

Ford had cracked piston rings? in the Turbo??? Man i think these are all one off problems. The BA Turbo engine was torture tested (like 350 hrs at redline) and they didn't exactly fail, they passed with flying colours. (so we are told)... Sometimes engines arent run in properly thats why on dynos some have more power than others, etc... When you dont run in an engine properly, as in you thrash it as soon as you buy it, the parts wear dodgy and the metallic peices in the sump get recirculated, thats why new car have a service after like 5000km, 1000 on some cars.
I still rekon the cracked piston ring could have happened on any car... NOT just a BA turbo falcon, imagine how people must drive those cars :D

Well actually the Gen 3 V8 dropped oil pressure has been in the papers time and time again, also have a mate that works for Holden and as for the BA, well my best mate worked for Tickford as they were once known. They gave the engines heaps but like all things a bad batch of rings fgot to the production line and now they have a problem, Anyway my mate turned to bosch, more money than tickford was paying and now has a TJ VRX with a 3.8 in it, new engine, mmm

list of my probs with TH:
1) bad steering studder whenever i go over bumps, esp holes
2) air-con recirculator likes to switch itself to intake air at highway speeds
3) auto box goes to neutral by itself at times (hard to tell when, just happens!
4) squeaky brakes. but i'm not too bothered abt it
5) a little harsh jerk when going from 1st to 2nd gear
6) replaced engine mounts @ 90,000 kms
hmm this prob the first and last locally-built car i'll be buying.

certainly no commodore engine, it's the new magna engine that should come with the whole new car in 2005. His car is running off there own computer has the exaust done, uses computer mapping to make the throttle full open at 1/3 pedal and the car is pushing around 230kw at the engine. Has a LSD obviously, so with what he has said so far i would say the new 2005 Magna should be around the 180kw standard with more for the VRX model. Fingers crossed.
Hey you know Mits Australia is building a 2 door, 400kw V8 Magna for fun. well thats the rumors going throught the dealers.

Had my TJ from new 95,000k 3 yrs
1 - Engine oil leaks on going from new. (Have given up on ever getting it fixed)(Personally I think it is coming from oil filter seal due to too much oil pressure)
2 - Passenger electric window assembly replace with upgraded unit.
3 - Drivers side as above.
(The plastic idler wheel gets cut into by cable.)
4 - Leaking left steering rack seal.
5 - The biggest rip off of all, transmission went into fail safe one morning, look in the hand book and only suggestion as per usuall take it to the dealer, so I did and got a bill for I think $60-70 to track fault in transmission to blown reversing light fuse, how the F@ck would anybody ever think that that would cause the transmission to go to fail safe and why the dealer would rip you for finding it ??

I've had these problems with my TJ:
1. Drivers Sunvisor saging (Getting replaced under warranty)
2. Passenger Sunvisor has a bubble in the SRS Lable (Getting replaced under warranty)
3. Shudder at idle (Replaced the Front and Rear engine mounts under warranty) - only made it a bit better.
4. Passenger seat shakes at idle and doing 110km/h (sometimes inbetween) - Still trying to get something done about this
5. Static on FM Radio. (Getting replaced next week with another radio under warranty). Apparently this is a widespread problem...

TJ April 2002 Sports Tiptronic.
AT 30000km I had :
1. One fully blown tiptronic (stranded in Yass !)
2. Bad seals in windows
3. The plactic boot cover thing, inside the boot that is over the back lip, comes off.
Had these fixed under warranty.
At 45 000km:
1. Second tiptronic on the way out.
2. Bad seals in windows
3. The plactic boot cover thing, inside the boot that is over the back lip, comes off.
In other words, samer again now. Back to dealer next week for another run....ffs

is it a high pitched "geek geek" sound???
i had this problem w/ my left rear door and figured that the door panels were rattling against the metal frame... i went and got some surface protectors from kmart... stuck it between the door's panel and the metal frame... it was gone until last wk i begin hearing it from my front passenger door

I have a TJ Advance. Got it at 51,000 and it's now done 63,000. Only fault I have had was when at about 80 the revs seemed to drop off and then come back on etc etc. Took it to local mitsu dealer and he said oxygen sensor was gone. But they would fix it under warranty. BUT ... they wanted to charge me $120 for a throttle body clean. I went to my normal mechanic and told him and he couldn't believe it. HE done the throttle body clean for $30 and still made money out of me. Does Mitsu require me to pay someone to stand and watch the cleaner dry? It was an absolute joke. As soon as I told them my own mechanic had cleaned the throttle body they made excuses to put off doing my sensor. Were they attempting to make me pay for the repair through over charging me for other things?
I'm personally disgusted by the way Mitsu treated me. And unfortunately here in Newcastle there in only one company who deal with Mitsu.
Cross fingers none of these other problems happen though. But if they are going to I hope they happen before warrenty expires.

the ppl where i got the car from (new) hate me(ZUPPS in BRISBANE), they have not replace anything, sorry i am wrong they replaced the seals on teh front windows twice and once in the back
i had to pay to have these replaced/fixed when the car waas STILL under WARRANTY
Problem (reason why they did not fix)

2. engine mount 10months (car has been lower)
3. cv joints 12months (car has been lower)
4. the plant. gears 26months (wheels to big, to much pressure on the gears)
5. battery 8 months (had one sub & amp in car)
6. horn (car has been in a eaccident)
7. alram remote 18months (works find with 1m range)
8. rotors neede machine after 3 weeks (u must have drove though water)

I used Hunter City at Hamilton when they opened their new shop up. I eventually rang Hunter City at Glendale because that is their head office and because they wouldn't do my O2 sensor and kept avoiding me I rang them with the shits. Glendale sorted it quickly, first time. Hamilton had an attitude with me when I dropped the car in though. Who cares. Might take it straight to Glendale next time although I am coming from Medowie, 40mins drive away.

have had same sort of probs with the dealer here, for minor things, always cant find anything wrong with it, Or always blame your mods:
Aircon not very cold- told nothing wrong with it.
Engine surging below 3'000 on acceleration- told cant find anything wrong (turned out to be oxy sensor, but had to get automasters to find that).
oil leak at sump they fixed but has returned.
window air leak noise at speed, told cant find nothing wrong with it.
they did fix a blown engine mount.

mitsubishi service is definitely shocking. With our 99 TH, the tape deck/radio wasnt working...took it to mistubishi at ryde they said its not worth looking for the prb and if we touch ur car we charge you for it, and said just replace ur head unit from starthfield car audio. Took it to a car audio shop, it was a blown fuse and identified it in 30 secs. Went back to mitsuhishi and bought the fuse and asked em if they can check to make sure we fitted it right. Service manager refused till we argued for 30 mins.
NRMA report when we bought the car said there was a oil leak in the cam seal. Took it to dealer and said this is the report. Can you tell us how much to repair these prbs. With oil leak he said the nrma guy's writing is crap so we have to pay $200 for a service and he will look for leaks then. We leave it for service he says he cant find it, probabaly not major anyway. We were prepared to pay upto $500 all we wanted was a proper checkup to fix up any potential issues. I am not going to be happy if we get a major oil prob in year or two
He was ok in other aspects though. Our brakes badly needed machining, timing belt (only done 66,000) had a crack, window seals etc were an issue and he said change it 9 months dont bother now, save ur money and do it later.

i have been informed by a couple of sources and through personal experience RYDE MITSUBISHI are some of the dodgiest people in the business, also have learnt from experience do not trust NRMA when it comes to inspections. Get somebody in like SYDNEY VEHICLE CHECK, much better in my opinion.

really u have had a dodgy expereince with ryde mitsubishi as well?....would you mind sharing what went wrong or recommend someone else we can go to....not sure if anyone else is close...cause of their strong recommendation we didnt fix up a camseal oil leak, our timing belt had a crack and they want to replace it and said we didnt need to machine our brakes even though the brake shudder is crazy unless you brake gently...my dad doesnt have any knowledge bout cars and he took their word for it (over mine!!)...not good service considering my dads always been a toyota (reliability) man and i forced him to the magna

I guided my mum 2 years ago into buying a LANCER she purchased it from RYDE MITSUBISHI, it had a NRMA inspection accompanying it. It had only 30,000 ks and was still under new car warranty. NRMA inspection had been done only 1 week prior to us buying the car, it stated aircon, brakes everything were in good condition. I drove the car home once we picked it up and noticed the brakes were not wat i expected, air con was also a bit iffy. Just before the new car warranty expired we organised an inspection from Sydney Vehicle Check, he noted the brakes were down to the metal and that the aircon compressor did not work at all and had not done for quite some time. Car was taken back to RYDE and they said all was ok, put some dye into the aircon and told us to come back in a few weeks to see if there was a leak.
We returned to Ryde couple of weeks later, in which time the new car warranty had expired. All of a sudden they aknowledged the air con was not working and that the other points on SVC inspection were correct and that they would need repairs that my mum would have to pay for. After much complaining they eventually did repair these things under warranty, but i m not sure i trust their work.
The SVC guy that inspected the LANCER told me about a few examples of RYDES handywork, and i think SVC no longer do inspections at car yards because they are not well liked by car dealers. I have recommended SVC to several ofmy mates and the inspections are always thorough and not too expensive. Once you compare the report SVC give compared to the lacklustre effort of NRMA you will see what i mean.
Anyone out there found a MITSU delaer that is any good in SYDNEY as i have a service due.......

unbeleivable thanks for sharing your experience, makes me wonder about the supposedly good natured advice we received from ryde mitsubishi. He kept telling us that he was trying to save us money. Anybody recommend a good service dealer in sydney? (if possible within 25 km radius from city) cause we have a pretty major service due soon.
