Ok my clutch is slipping more and more and after driving my brothers TH manual the other day, I realized just how bad it is getting. Last night I was up until dawn searching these forums for as much information about clutches as I could. There was so much it was confusing me.

I get the apparently common tick tick tick noise when my car is in idle and clutch out. As soon as clutch is in noise goes away. Someone said it was the input shaft bearing but most agreed this is the thrust bearing and the most practical thing to do is fixing it while getting a new clutch. Can someone confirm that it is indeed the thrust bearing and they have successfully removed the noise by fixing/adjusting/replacing it. How much EXTRA does this cost on top of the cost of a new clutch?

Secondly, what clutch should I look for? What I want is something to last! I absolutely hate the feel of clutch slip and I don’t want to buy something that “occasionally slips when its being thrashed”. Now having said that I don’t want to spend $1000+. I also would like the clutch to feel not a lot harder than the stock unit. I DON’T do burnouts but it would cop some punishment launching hard at the drags. Daiken clutches were mentioned a lot and seemed to be reasonably priced. What do people think?

This is easily the most important purchase so far for my car so I want to get it right THE FIRST TIME.

If you don't want to spend anything more than $1000 fitted ... your only option is a heavy duty daikin I think.

A ceramic will set you back about $900 for the clutch alone ... and another 2-3 hours required for fitting it.

The thrust bearing should come in the kit. If not it isn't expensive ($25??).

ok so it should be pretty simple to get it done at the same time then hey. Daiken heavy duty clutches - good enough? Id be happy if i got a clutch that gave me the same feel as my bro's stock TH clutch, but perhaps a little stronger.

OK, Daiken/Exedy IMO make the best clutches for the everyday application. Clutch selection depends alot on what you use your car for and how much power you go going. You could just get yourself a Heavy duty clutch which would provide some nice hold if you plan on making more power. If however it's just your daily driver car with the basic air mods then I would sugust you go with a standard clutch plate with a 20% stronger pressure plate for extra clamp. Exedy will make up to a 40% stronger pressure plate but 20% should be enough.

Don't forget to have the flywheel machined!

I read that the magna flywheel's couldnt be machined? Or could only just be machined slightly?

And Meh, thats a decent price. If i cant get a similar price up here i might try them.

So far every shop has been stunned at the price much more so than me. To quote one lady "are you sitting down?".

So far it seems the best bet is to buy the clutch kit from suppliers, and have it fitted elsewhere. Best price for a clutch kit so far is $530 for an Standard Exedy one (same as Daiken?), and best price for fitting, at Bridgestone, about $350 or so.

get the std replacement from daikin, it will be more than enough i reckon mate. just ahve the flywheel machined according to the manual, insuring the step is correctly set.

dont go for a standard replacment
go for a daiken definatly u wont regret it,

gold coast brakes down here did mine and did a good job of it too

then a year later i got a letter saying come in and they will check the clutch ect sayin they will re-adjust it if need be and they also did a free brake fluid flush n change.

thats exactly what my last post described. And as others have suggested, for an extra $80, i think its worth getting the Daiken clutch kit for $530 over the standard one for $450 (even though the best price for standard i have come accross is over $600 so far).

Meh, i might just make a day of it and head down the coast. That is of course if they will do it for the same price now. But it seems they know a thing or 2 about service :)
But yeh cheapest total so far is $900

stick with the standard clutch, have the pressure plate checked for clamping pressure and just renew the disc and thust bearing if possible, keeps the cost down.
