i recently noticed my car was running too "cool" as such the gauge would be on 1/4 even after thrashing it and would not rise, heater was ok. i thought might as well replace the thermostat. now the temp gauge is 1/3, a bit off 1/2 on a hot day so i suppose thats ok. ( i know the gauge isnt stuffed as ive seen it go quite high when i didnt remove air pockets from the coolant).
my question is where does your temp gauge sit out of curiosity?

Hey Subby,
Mine's usually at the 1/2 point - though today (28c and air-con) it'll go just a bit above 1/2, 3/5 you could say :)

2day it was around 35c and i was also towing with the a/c on and it was just around the 1/2 mark maybe a lil under but on a usual 25c day without the a/c it sits happly at 1/4.
ive never seen it go over 1/2 and ive never seen it under 1/4 onces the cars running

No idea, mine doesnt work and i cant be f00ked fixing it :P
lately its been reading lower and lower, lately its around 1/4 city driving and 1/10 highway driving, yeah i know its bad, i think the sensors going out, may also take it to a local instrument specialist.
I usually read about 5-8 bars. At the moment I can't tell what it is, as there ain't no panel...

car seems fine was just curious, with the new thermostat (rated to open at 82c +) when i start the car (cold) the temp gauge goes to about half way stops there for about 1 min then drops all the way to about 1/4 (cool day) and stays there for the duration of the drive - have yet to see what it does hotter days. i suppose thats ok.
my old thermo didnt do that at all just stayed 1/4 all the time and on the fwy (cold nights) it just stayed on C as if it didnt move at all.
i decided to block a line commin from the charcol canister (already blocked the vacuum hoses that go to behind the carb) - little did i know i should have at least vented it to the atmosphere. it created a vapour lock in my fuel lines and good fun was had trying to start my car. eventualy started now i vent it as is.

try get a sensor onto it instead of the guess work, jaycar have a DMM with a k type thermocouple for around about 30 dollars, its long enought to reach the engine and the DMM sit in the cabin so you can keep an eye on temps
i rate them within 1 degree, except if the battery is dying then they are around 5 degree out for the last 5 minutes of battery life.
for the people that dont know what a thermocouple is, its just two wire of different composition joined at the end and different temps make the metals react differently and the DMM is calibrated to put a readout in degrees onto the display. i bought one for myself about a year ago and it was the best 30 bucks ever spent, gives me a good idea how effecient my IC and radiator is, better than any analog gauge with no numbers are thats for sure

All three Magnas I have owned have ran quite happily at 1/2 after running for a while.

mine used to sit around 1/4 to 1/3, but now sits from 1/3 to a smidge under 1/2
that was after replacing the thermostat and the stuffed thermostat housing and various water related work
no water / heat problems since, i believe im also using an 82c thermostat too, or whatever is standard for a TP
Yeah i was curious too as to what my car was running heat wise, i even bought a guage to install somewhere like jasons boost guage so i dont have this dumb bit of rice stickin out but when im giving the car a hard time or its getting a hard time i can have a looksee and see what it says, its in degrees too.. up to 180 or something.. i also got an oil guage too since it was like buy one get a second half price so im like ok.. who wants to install them for me?
