View Full Version : How to remove leather gear selector on late model magna
Hi all,
I'm trying to find out how to remove the gear selector on a TJ VRX auto. I know the standard vinyl selector on the executives have a screw at the back you take out then it lifts off. Do you have to remove the leather to get at the screw or do they remove some different way.?

ahhhh NO Stop!!!
What you need is 2 very thin screwdirvers or something similar like spring steel metal shims. Put them down both sides of the button and then you can (with a lot of trouble and swearing) get the button out of the recess. It takes a while and playing around at coming at different angles is necessary. I am sure mitu have a special tool for this but keep mucking around but be careful not to lever to hard (you don't need to just need to get the right angle and disengage the two tabs that are holding it in position) or push it so that you scratch it.
Once that is done you remove the spring and the rubber boot and after buying a 12mm long shank socket (I think that is the right size, just check it with a ordinary one obviously you wont be able to turn an ordinary one) from autobarn (about $2) then you can undo it from the stick.
When it is off you will have the shaft with a threaded end and a plastic stem that allows the gear lever to shift.
If you are thinking of putting on an aftermarket shifter___
If you want to put a manual shifter on this you will need a piece that I can have made up for you but an auto knob has a button so it should just bolt on and then activate the stem. You might have to cut the stem to have it match the height of the shifter.
The leather boot will look a bit funny as I have mine just sitting over the shift box and not pushing up against the console like most people do.
Give us a hoy if you need any more help.
