BP Ultimate and Shell Optimax... depending on which petrol station i past first
dunno if its my brain playing tricks on me but i notice better response with Ultimate... however i heard from someone here that u r more prone to get carbon buildup ... Optimax is cleaner
I am always poor and trying to save money you see...
I get whatever is cheapest near me. Usually its shell unleaded coz i shop at coles and get that fuel discount.
I honestly don't feel a diff between optimax and normal fuel. The diff is most likely in my head.

Usually go with Shell unleaded, but back when petrol was hitting nearly $1.20 i was using safeway petrol, its horrible i know but the **** was always around the $1 mark. Get about 450kms from a tank with shell unleaded, i have a TR 4 cyl 2.6 though. I've just put optimax in my car and i'm up to 250km and havn't even hit half a tank yet, i can get up to 650km on optimax and about 500 on regular. Some people will say optimax wont boost economy, i say bs, i've witnessed it myself. You also get a power gain so, if you work it out, the extra 8 cents may even become cheaper lol

yeah I use all that premium ultimate mega optimax vortex super crap
I don't notice any difference tho, but it doesn't cost *that* much more, so I might as well.

I mosly use premium (what ever brand I happen to be driving past when I decide to fill up). I can't notice any difference between regular and premium performance wise, but I do feel I get slightly better economy.
And hey, if it really does burn cleaner and is therefore better for the environment then that alone is good enought reason to use it. I gotta breath the air afterall.

Usually BP ULP but whatever I see. Optimax gets better economy and BP Ultimate runs smoother. Don't see any difference power wise and you won't unless you've got an engine tuned for it or that has knock sensors and advances timing automatically.

Another Coles customer, so I usually get Shell Unleaded and once a month or so I get Optimax. I notice the mileage is slightly better with Optimax, but no difference in power or anything else. No problem with either fuel.

BP Ultimate is what I use in my new car
BP Ultimate is what I used in my old car.
- Caltex Vortex burns differently for more efficiency
- Shell Optimax burns for more performance
- BP Ultimate burns for more performance like Shell Optimax as well as cleaning the motor
and lower emissions
If you live in Sydney apparently Mobil Synergy 2000 is an excellent fuel. My father uses it in his Ducati 748R and he notices quite a difference. Obviously the motor is a bit different to our car motors but the fuel works well.
I tried ultimate and got worse kms than usual and also the car performance was noticably effected.
Tried optimax and kms were about the same but the car was revvier.
So I usually stick to standard unleaded.
BTW my mechanic told me not to ever bother with independant fuel stations as they quite often get crap fuel.
He said if the shell or BP refinery screws up a batch they will often mix it into a proper batch at about 1% and sell that to the independant sellers. He also said sometimes it gets as high as 3%.

for any notices to be made when using 98 octane fuels go through a few cycles of it, ie. continously use it over a period of time. advancing your timming few degs wont hurt either. also i dont see how anyone would use reg unleaded if they care about their car?
regardless if you dont notice performace increase (its not going to be major)
but easier reving, cleans your system, burns cleaner.
for $2-3 more a tank than what you usualy pay why the hell not

Pfft well at least u guys get the choice of this "Ultimate and Optimax" stuff we here in tasie have been ROYALLY STOOGED the highest octane (without having to go to Performance Automobiles and paying something like 1.50 a L to get reall stuff) is 96 and thats called Premium PFFT i hate Tassie Pumps and we pay up to 1.15 per l for that crap
enough of my rant i use Shell Premium in my Beast then every 3 - 4 tanks i add that octane boost it brings it up to about 98 - 99 octane

I use BP Ultimate, its the only RON 98 avaliable in WA I believe. Shell Opimax is RON 95 or 96 from memory but im not 100% sure so correct me if im wrong.
Anywho I allways fill the VRX up BP Ultimate and sware by it, performance increase is minimal but however I do get better economy and the car does drive alot smoother. In my opinion its worth the extra money especially if it burns as clean as they state.
I also fill my 50cc scooter up with BP Ultimate and the performance difference is very noticeable. Sure its only a 50cc reed valve carby fed 2 stroke but it goes about 5-7kms faster than regular and on a scooter thats everything lol

for the extra $0.07 a litre so on average $5 a tank isnt really that much money to pay for premium,
ne way BP ultimate for me, nothing else ever

I used to have a Honda CRR900(Motorbike 4 the dummies)and notice the differance in performance and so on. Shell optimax is crap on performance and would never use it, i found the Synergy 8000 from mobile was the best. I started using it in my Jetski too and was great. The BP premium is good, lately ive been using the Caltex and very happy with it, ive been told the Shell Optimax is bad and would never recommend it to anyone.

And who told you that rubbish? Im hoping its someone who has actually done studies on the effects of deterioration and engine wear using different petrol's... Or was it a mate of a mate whose dad owns a petrol company...
If it was bad, im sure they wouldnt be selling it.... Especially a big corp like that.

I don't see how using standard unleaded indicates not caring for your car. The magnas are tuned for regular pump unleaded. By saing that I'm not condeming the 98ron variant, I just don't see the point in using it every fill up on a car thats not a "performance vehicle".
BP Ultimate is better IMO. if i use shell's premium or normal unleaded, my motor knocks... and the throttle feels much more touchier and the motor runs much better with 98 octane fuel...
subby
20-12-2004, 05:38 PM
fuel is always a touchy subject. and cars made in aus are tuned to run on around 91 ron fuel ok. thats all good for the avg user who isnt a car enthusiast - you spend good money on oils, check everything, service it reg, look after it etc
its not a bad thing even if your car isnt tuned to suit it (bit more power by advance timing, or if you have an aftermarket ecu, or even piggyback one). i suppose you can stick to reg unleaded as long as you dont go to independants and only go to places like shell or BP which are busy are always likely to have "fresher" fuel than some small servo which gets less regular refills.

Well when you make a claim that you wouldnt recommend something, usually a person would back that up with some solid information..
Obviously you dont have said information, so why post that you know something shells optimax? It just annoys me when someone says, so and so told me its bad, therefore it is.. Without even doing any research into it...

I now use BP Ultimate religiously. I have used Caltex Vortex and I liked it equally.....since I now have a BP fuel card I stick with BP Ultimate.
I tried Shell Optimax a few times and was not impressed....maybe a bad batch?

I've pretty much always used Optimax since for a long time it was the only 98 RON fuel. BP Ultimate is the only other one that I know of. All the others are 95 RON. I have absolutely no complaints with it. No pinging or other probs. I've used BP Ultimate but prefer Optimax.
More important than the brand of fuel is which servo I fill up at. There's only 2 or 3 that I would use. Newer servo's with high turnover. I never fill up at no frills servos. If I wanted alcohol and toluene in my system I'll add it myself.
Usually Shell Unleaded, though I do run premium through it every so often.
I get around 550-650km a tank, depending on cycle.
Now, I'm trying to get a drum of Avgas...

most times i add 1-2lt toluene to my tank (with a tank full of 98 ron fuel already). very big difference. its not an instant kick in, but when my tank gets about half way you can feel the differnece - engine has a meaner exhaust note almost like a 6cyl and acceleration is effortless like a 6. brings up your fuel a few ron up and its noticable. cheap too.

I used to own a Pulsar SSS and I did this test of all the premiums over a period of a few months. I found that the Mobil 8000 made the car run rough. Optimax increased fuel consumption without power gain. Vortex and Ultimate seemed pretty good for both economy and smoother running.
WRX guys swear by Optimax. So it depends on the car/engine what fuel runs best.
Japanese engines are made with high RON fuel that they use in Japan of something like 103 RON, so they have to be heavily detuned to run on 91 RON. Also std unleaded isn't always 91 RON, It is 'watered' down with all sorts of stuff. They have cracked down on ethanol but there are plenty of other additives. The premium fuels have additives too, but they are detergents to clean your injectors and stuff like that. The oil companies call it premium for a reason. The other stuff is crap.
I have to say that since buying my VR-X I have been using Vortex, Optimax and regular Shell and haven't noticed any difference in consumption or power. Again I have been skimping on fuel by going to Shell and Caltex with supermarket dockets, due to the shock of paying $70+ for a tank of fuel whereas in the Pulsar I was paying $40 a tank.
I will find a supermarket that provides dockets for BP and switch to Ultimate. That seems to be the preferred if I have judged this thread correctly.

yeh my old man runs ours his wrx on nothing but optimax as its meant to be the best for it and the dealers recommend nothign else for them. Makes a difference though it gets a lot better consumption on optimax than anything else.
Another mate ran the new vertex 10, i think its called dont quote me on his 99 xr6 5-speed and he rekens he got another 80km out of the tank than usual on the open road, so i might try some of this next time im in sydney, does anyone know if you can get this in newcastle or anywhere else?

I use LPG for everyday (110 octane but burns slower) premium unleaded on the hillclimb track. Both work well, premium I get 9.7 ltr/100km on LPG 14-15 ltr/100km. Normally I run Shell Premium due to the fact that it's typically the cheapest, closest to home servo and right next to my work. I also get the 4 cent off vouchers which makes it a little less painful. You can spot the difference between this and regular though it's not that much. The only high RON fuel up here is Ultimate and that makes so much difference it's not funny especially as you get towards the lower end of a tank. Go out on a cool night and it's even better! Compare price though.. say $1.08 for Regular, $1.12 for Premium at Shell then take off your 4 cents.. to something around $1.28 for Ultimate and the fact that you have to drive into town to get it. Fun.. but expensive.

I use both regularly. I usually go through periods where I use regular unleaded then another where I'll use Premium. It usually depends on which side of $1/Litre the price is.
I do notice a difference in mine (99 3.5L AlteraLS). It seems to run much smoother at idle with the premium. (I have some of the problems with rough idle, blah blah, as mentioned on this forum)
As for which one is best, I honestly couldn't say, but I've tried Optimax (coles docket) and Caltex Vortex (woolies docket, har har.) and cannot tell the difference.

has anyone tried the new petrol? i dunno what its called, sorta like a semi-premium. mobil and a few other have it now, its a 96RON unleaded fuel instead of the typical 91RON or 98RON premium. its supposed to be a replacement for the LRP, but people with older cars have to add the valve seat protectant in.

I myself used to use Optimax but have now switched to the newest Caltex product. They have premium and now they have come out with Premium 98 so that's what i'll be using for the next few months. But happy with results so far. And unless you tune your car with premium then you wont get much out of it.
