Got a '90 Magna TP wagon thats had its back core plugs done and various oil leaks fixed. Can now feel vibration through the clutch when I'm resting ones foot on it, gear change is clunky, when ac on and I change gear the revs drop way down to less than 400. Mechanic then says its your computer and increases idle speed but its still as bad. No acceleration. Feels like its labouring. Any suggestions as I've spent $800 already just to do this. Am I being had over? They did replace a lot of the hosing.

From your description of the symptoms, they're very similar to the ones that plagued my old TP.

The cause was a split in the air intake hose.

I'd put it in for a service and it was never right after it came back, the problems got progressively worse and inspite of several return visits to the service ctr, I eventually started to look for the cause myself.

The split was in one of the creases on the underside, depending on the exact angle of the engine it would often seal itself (particularly in the early stages). It was probably cause by a combination of age and the mechanic bending it out of the way rather than removing it during servicing.

The initial fix was as easy as a piece of "100 mile an hour tape". Wreckers charged $15 for the intake hose.

It's worth a look.

Cheers
John

Thanks for that John. Not wanting to seem totally dumb but "air intake hose". Do you mean around the air filter?
The car worked great before - smooth, around town had total confidence in the thing. Now one gets pins and needles in ones foot from the vibrations via clutch!
Would duct tape do the trick if I find the leak (how do you find the leak?)
Thanks Mac
