Hi all,
Just a random question, putting all in perspective in terms of engine condition, what part of the Magna V6 engine do u think is its best aspect? I got a 3.5 auto, and I think that standstill acceleration would be 100 million times better if the auto hooked up alot quicker, but I must say im most impressed with acceleration at high speeds... Id be driving at 80 with it in 2nd gear, then foot flat 2 the floor and hold on it and the car flys. Im also impressed with how responsive the engine is at low revs say when ur just turn into a street which has a steep incline. I always wondered how different the 3.0 is. If only the idle was good......

well this is an easy one for me, as i just owned a commodore before this car. Basically the commodore had terrific take of and low down, push you in the back of your seat power! this the magna lacks.. in 4spd auto atleast anyway. Thats the only thing which ****s me about this car is it does have a little bit of a lack of low down power.. sometimes when you catch the engine at low revs and the gearbox doesnt shift down, the car just goes no where.. its got nothin
In saying that however.. my fravorite part of it is the fact that it LOVES a rev! Once again coming from a V6 commodore this is a very big novelty for me (V6 commodores are like allergic to anything over 3000rpm..) The top end power of the car is terrific, i love the fact that on the highway, just a flick of your heel and the car goes from 100 to 120 before you can say "THE SPEED LIMIT IS 110 YOU #$%^WIT!"
So in summary.. hate the lack of low down torque, but love the way she revs and the top end POWAH!

GEEZ tell me about it.... The car performs brilliantly all day.. and has decent power.. untill that one time you catch it at low revs... auto doesnt kick down, which simply is because when it does kick down it revs to 5000+ revs with the engine screaming.. and by the time it does that with the auto gear box engaging a lower gear and all... there just was no point to it... and as RJL25 said... you get no where!! (fast) and its because of it being gutless down low... which SUCKS!! but is great for traction.. haha! no power = no loss of traction...
whats the simplest way to get power down.. low..

I don't like how it wont shift back to 1st after about 40kmhr, but at the same time I think it's a good thing. What a waste of fuel and strain on the motor.
My dads BA shifts back to 1st at like 70 kmhr, now that's plain stupid.
So in some ways I think it's bad, and in other ways good.
Dont know if this affects you guys but something that i noticed is that if you have traction control and it is on it will stop your car from changing down especially when you are going slow cause you will lose traction.Noticed the other day when i had it of and it squealed in second(5spd tippy) which has never ever happened with it switched on .I have thumped it before and it just stays in the same gear and slowly picks up revs.Just my 2c worth :)

Not that I disagree with some of the comments, but it is designed first and foremost to be a family car with a smooth ride and performance. Automatic transmissions are not really made to shift down too much in a car like this. Don't forget, safety comes first. Even though I think it's designed more for a comfortable ride, I can't complain about my automatic not shifting down at the right time.
My 3.0 is a pretty good revver, although I rarely ever go above 3500 rpm. What I like about it is there's decent performance for what I consider is pretty good fuel consumption. Never had a problem with the engine, either. Reliability is a top priority for me. I would rather drive a sh!tbox that gets me from A to B everyday than a Ferrari that spends half its time in the workshop.

Your not the only one who has mentioned that. I'll give it a go in the mornig though however i doubt mine will squeel the tyres (Goodyear F1 GS-D3). They grip, grip and grip more.

Don't forget the Falcons have taller gearing to 70kph in 1st isn't as bad as in a Magna with a shorter first :D

My VX commodore is like that and the gearbox in the commodores is far far worse than any 3rd gen Magna box, If you are doing 40 kph and it does not kick back to 1st gear you have nothing until about 95-100kph where the tall 2nd gear starts to come into play, at open road speeds it flies for overtaking but between 50 and 100kph it is useless, needs lower overall gearing, 3.7 instead of 3.08. But although not fast at low revs it does have plenty of torque even just above idle and you can feel it.
