View Full Version : tyres slipping when take off in the wet

Was just driving around in sydney tongiht after the storms and rain. When i took off from the light i reved the engine to about 2500rpm and noticed a quick big slipping sound from my tyres. Apparently this has happened often in the wet with those white medium strips, and a friend of mine aslo has that problem. Just wondering if theres any technique to avoid this problem?

Also, turning on your air-con helps :P

running on 6 months old bridgestones 205/15.

Its just that when you take off with your tyres screeching at the lights, it looks like you are trying to race someone :) . Since im also on my P's some ppl might get a diifferent idea.

Better Tyres - silica compound works a treat.

The sideways slide when you really hit the throttle is somewhat disturbing as well - nearly took out another vehicle doing this :(

Thats when I decided to change the tyres - the stock ones suck...

I found the stock ones to be alright for normal driving duty even in a manual, but for more spirited driving they are a mongrel :shock:

i wonder what that could be lol

seriously though you should be able to take off with a third of the revs you discribed.i would recommend using about half.
just takes practice, whats wrong with spinning 1st,2nd and third from a set of lights.

try not to stop on the white strips and yeah don't hit the throttle as much (more revs=more slipage) if it does spin take you foot off the throttle for a sec and then put it back on slowly.
Also check the tyres.

I hear ya... I have pretty serious traction problems in the wet, even when being nice with the throttle, I am looking into getting a better brand and compound in tyres very soon. A few times I have got the wheels spinning at higher speeds (80-90) too which can get a bit freaky. Just have to try to go easier, cos always in the back of my mind I am thinking that if this is how it is behaving from stop start in the wet, then under heavy braking there is a pretty good chance of locking up too easily in the wet aswell.

What tyre pressures are you running?

running on 32 psi, look like its a bit flat. I think these problem are more prong to a magna then a equivalent v6 like the camry.

after yesterdays rain... and my car slipping sideways... all im gonna say is... that....

dont drive like a nutta in the wet....

Take it slow and you wont have problems...

I didnt drive like a nutta.. all i did was a norma speed up to the speed limit Acceleration.. and nearly ended up damaging my car!

Take it slow...

I don't know if i'm right but when ever you put take off at a complete stop all weight is taken is pushed to the back of the car hence there is no weight in the front to keep the wheels on the ground and they won't grip. But if this was a rear wheel drive they will have no problem as this is their advantage. Problaly if the car was a All whell drive this wouldn't be a problem.

Maybe to avoid this is let it roll a bit then put it to the floor.

I no expert but this is what i have observed.

It's all in the tyres (plus a bit of your HEAVY right boot).

I had the same problem when it rained. VERY easy to spin front wheels from lights.

Replaced tyres with Dunlop's with a silica compound and traction in the wet is almost as good as it used to be in the dry on the standard tyres.

What Dunlops?

And what tyres did they replace? Every front wheel drive with decent power that i have driven has always had trouble with a quick start in the wet.
