View Full Version : Why De-wing ?

For those guys out there that have de-winged their VR-X's, what do you do about the high mount stop light? My VR-X only has the one in the wing. If I took the wing off, I'd have to buy a new brake light and wire it in. What a pain.

do u mean the stop light in the wing itself ??

i had a light on my wing, i just chopped the wire, put some tape around it so it didnt touch nething and then just left it up under the boot lid

I don't know why you guys do it.
I love the VRX/sports wing and the Ralliart wing, very distinctively magna/mitsu.
But each to their own, I have a wagon so I cant really comment, although am thinking about a sports wagon spoiler (after the kit gets put on of course) Not too sure wether I like it enough to actually do it but.

DOT regulations in Australia state that you must have a high mount stop light. By all rights you should not get a pink slip if you don't have one.

depending on what state....

if you had a wing with a brake light (standard) and u take that wing off then u have to place one on the rear window other was its like what u said not dot and get defected,fined...

probably never get caught, but spose ya never know

Meh, i think you might be confused. Magnas that came out of the factory with no wings had a top mount brake light in the parcel shelf right up against the rear window. If a magna with a spoiler had one of these it would be useless as the spoiler is in the way of it, so those with spoilers instead have their high mount brake light actually in the spoiler itself.

Therefore those people who have removed the stock spoilers are now missing a high mount brake light

yeh i had a brake light in my wing standard and caz i took it off i dont have one in my parcel shelf,

if this "defect" is true, how didi get a safety certificate on it and got it rego'd and the transport place did their own inspection and still passed it

hmmmmmmm

all standard cars must have a high mount one if they dont hav a spoiler one coz with out this in some cases at night, people dont know if you are braking specially if the tail lights are on and when tails overpower the brake lights thats why they made this as a regulation and as standard

It depends on the copper... Though, any walking up to my car at this exact moment (it's in a perpetual state of missing bits and pieces) will have a field day...

I love the wings and want one for the back of my Verarda AWD, maybe turn it into a Phantom GTV alha new Verarda AWD. Anyway if anyone wants the light for the rear window I'll swap it for a wing. The wiring is only a matter of unplugging in the loom so Please DON"T cut the wires, then you just plug in the shorter loom to the rear window.

I don't think i'd ever consider de-winging my ralliart. if i did it would only be to fit a smaller wing like the VRX style one.

I think taking the wing off the ralliart just takes the whole effect away, wouldnt do it if i had a ralliart..

My wing is staying... it adds so much to the look... especially side on.

and the light? from TH on... (mine is TJ vr-x) .. the light is high up near the roof, under the rear window glass .. not on the shelf. I would say it would be a case of wiring it up.

You're crazy man
If you want a quick VRX, here's a thought, buy a VRX and mod it.
Probably be cheaper and you wouldn't be f*#king up a perfectly good Ralliart car.
Just my opinion lol

De-wing a ralli art? thats like taking a turbo out of an XR6 turbo, YOU JUST DONT DO IT. De-winged ralli art with a vrx kit? thats abit silly, just buy a vrx and do a couple of mods and you'll get 180kW easy. I reckon ralli art wings are awesome, really makes a ralli art a ralli art.

ralliart wings are big and ugly, and no it doesnt make it a ralliart coz any fool can put one of those ugly wings on a magna/lancer

as i said IMO each to there own really, i jsut dont like wings i think cars look cleaner/sexier without a wing

I said it was a dream of mine, as in if money was no object. I think I'd rather start with 180kW and mod it than start with 163kW and mod it

And Mitsubishi already did a good job fu%king up a perfectly good magna when they made the Ralliart :P jokes......calm down ralliart owners

High mount stop light (highlight) are mandated by an ADR 60, your car will be built to comply with all relevant ADRs. By removing the spoiler light and not replacing it, your car no longer complies therefore unroadworthy, this also goes where both spoiler and rear screen highlight are connected at the same time. The ADR state that there can only be one central highlight or you may have 2 but they must be on the same horizontal plane.

As for the cops not noticing, thats easy you obviously weren't speeding cause I'm damn sure that's the only thing you get booked for anymore . The number of times I've seen the road rules broken with cops right at the scene and nothing being done is ridiculous  why, they weren't speeding.
Main roads/RTA wouldn't have a clue(not their fault) there's so many ADRs and it's not really their job as far as rego renewal goes.
The people doing safety certs/pink slips should know from what year cars have a highlight and pick it up as part of the light check.
