Quick Q,

Can magna keys be cut by ur usual locksmith? Like keys cut wont have anything to do with the immobiliser or anything? It just occured to me that I got one key... Imagine if i lost it...

You've got to order it through a mits dealer as it is encoded to the vehicle security system as far as I know. Seem to remember getting one either for the 97 or the 99 verada we had and had to get it through mits

You can order a blank with the chip in the key from Mitshubishi. You'll have to get the key "coded" by them. But you can get the actual key cut by any locksmith.

I recently got a key ordered for my TJ cost about $60. As mentioned already they took my vin number and ordered it ready to go from the factory.

The dealer then reset the remotes/emobiliser chip so that if any '****er' out there turns up with two of the three keys (I only got one from the car cealer when I bought the car) they can open the door but they ain't going nowhere.....unlikely I know........but a hell of a lot cheaper solution than rebarelling the locks...... :gtfo:

ps btw I know nothing....nothing

I recently had one done at the dealer and one done via a locksmith. They both cost around $75 but the dealer one included the cost of transponding of the key to the car. The other key I specifically didn't want transponded so I went to to a local locksmith, but found the price to be the same anyway. So yeah, best deal is via the dealer, and it takes a couple of days as the Mitsu keys come up from Adelaide, then they transpond it for you while you wait. Also at the dealer - you need to show rego papers or something that identifies you to the car.

For one key? Mate I paid just over $70 supplied cut and coded at the Northshore Mitsubishi - you were ripped off severely I think.

Yes $70 is about right. Had one done at Northshore a few months back.

yep, i got mine done for $60 each... maybe they got charged for coding it, which only takes 2 mins but i guess they'd have to charge for the full hour as all mechanics do!

Ordered 2 new keys via dealer last month, $70 each fully cut + $20 to code the car incl GST.

Need to give your VIN to the dealer who orders them from Adelaide factory and it comes fully cut within a day or 3. You need the dealer to code your car otherwise your immobiliser will not recognise that key.

it just occured to me -

i wonder if my car would need to get it coded.
A TE never came with a alarm, just an Immobiliser (im lead to belive)

but anyway,

since then, ive got an aftermarket alarm /immobiliser + changed the original ECU.

mmm... something to ponder

Just a note for TE-TJ owners, I'm in the process of installing a full function alarm on my TF therefore I have needed to disable the immobilisor (for remote start purposes, which I know is illegal).

I also only have one key but have just been to a locksmith who will supply and cut a new key for me to use in replacement of the transponder key for $25. The new key I will be given is actually for a Toyota Land Cruiser!

Does anyone know if this is the only other key available that is identical to a Magna key, or are all those type keys the same?

I know this option will only be available to those with a TE-TJ who have daisabled their immobilisor only.

The key blank is just a stick, anything of the same size will work.

The locksmith's recess cutter makes the actual groove.

Making a "dummy" key like that is useful for certain situations eg giving to your underage kid.
They can unlock the car to get in, but no risk of them starting up the car.

A few Toyota models (inc. Lexus) use the same type of keys Magnas

Just a note: Dont ever get Mitsu to program your remote lock/unlock RF Transmitters. They'll charge you a small fortune to code them to your car, but it's so simple to do yourslef its not funny. I actually had a mate drop his car and all his transmitters off to a dealer and had to leave it with them for 20 minutes. The process takes 5 seconds. He got ripped bad.

Pretty sure I read about it in the KJ handbook...?Silly Rabbit. I was looking in my old TE Handbook. It is contained in the TJ/KJ Handbook. Section 2-7 Keys and Locks: Remote control switch programming.

Just as a test I just rang Paul Wakeling and asked them if they could reprogram my remote switches. The response: No Worries: $60  Robbing [Censored]!!!!
